First off I am tree farmer. I usually do 1K per plant in bigs pots, organic no till.. But im going to try SOG. Using two gallon pots on a drip system using botanicare kind series. They been vegging for about a week since first signs of roots. About 6 inches tall. My question is I want to wait until the get about ten inches tall and take a 4" cutting from each top, then allow about 5 days more to veg before flowering. I think I can fit about 60 two gallon pots under 2K. Is it best to top them once or single cola them?
Thats first question

Your plants will dbl in size, so that should be a clue.
If you top. You'll need another week to establish the new "mains".

The rule of thumb I used, was to flip at 8" to 12" untopped, strain dependent.

Due to the #'s game here. I went back to full size plants 6 years ago.

I can SCROG 1 plant in a 4x4 area (aprox) and yield 2 - 2.5 lbs on average.

I i got a 1K above it and it's a great yielder. I was wishing for 2.5, but honestly I don't think it will be more 1.5 but only time will tell

OK, I see your yield problem (in comparison)...
You need to spread out and tie down/train the branching (and secondary branching) to be as horizontal as possible.
You (my goal) should just about mostly have the tops/buds turning "vertical". (yes on some strains, I do trim the downward oriented stem buds off).
You get bigger, stronger, more even finished budding!

The result is a massive "flat" looking bonzi type plant (I still have problems posting pics, personal choice).

The main stem comes about 2' out of the pot before branching is allowed to be used (yes there is a bit more time in veg allowed for). So there is some lollypopping involved.

Well you kinda answered your own question.

Is it effective? To a point as the material must compost it's self and you may not be allowing enough time for it to. Depends on how long it's there.
Your covering it (waste material). That's good, as waste cuttings left on TOP of the soil will encourage molds and unwanted fungus's to form.
Will it hurt? No, as your covering it.

I do suggest you dry out the waste material first.

Do I do it?
No. Just a personal preference to ensure no unwanted bio growth.

First, you realize that the 4 inches you take off the tops are not viable. They won't root. I assume you know that and are looking to top to maintain short plants of about the same height?

I've found that when you FIM/top plants early as you propose that topped plants will grow taller than plants FIM'd at the same time. In that case I would FIM your plants as soon as they have a separate definable crown on top. The plants in your first picture appear ready for a FIM job.

Good luck, BigSteve.

I collect my leaves and trimming and put them in a SEPERATE pile to dry out then mulch with them. The way you are currently doing them they could hear up when composting? Probably not, but If you have no-till pots and I assume over 10 gallon I would Definatly use a living mulch. For sure, no question that that is good for the soil with no tills.

I have never done SOG with bigger than 2 liters lol, but you can fit 4 2 liters per sq foot with a single cola style, Lollipop and yield 1/4-1/2 ounce per with Hempy no veg-as soon as they show roots you flower. I wouldn't top in a SOG, but then this isn't a true SOG anymore, so I n the words of that fat lady from that show about an annoying fat little girl "you do you Boo Boo."

Last question maybe. I lollipopped all my garden last night. Have tons of extra cuttings, I put them in the fridge, in zip locks and sprayed them with h2o how long will they stay good?CAM02322.jpg

"Huh? Why wouldn't they root, I do that all time and never had a problem once"

I should have been more clear. With time you can root young tops by putting them in water. I was trying to make the point that clone moms should be 5+ weeks old before giving up clones with the best chance of rooting (in my dome).

Sorry for sounding like a know-it-all. I'm here to learn too.

Good luck, BigSteve.

I agree w Big Steve, My clones are better when they are closer to 45- 60 days old.
I took my last clones in veg at 5 weeks, they seem weak and are still under the humidity dome. 6 days old, my GF is running shit, I am outa town.
I FM and Super Crop to create a canopy, under trim at the 3rd week of flower.
Taking a clone from a "pubescent " plant means they are all Young plants.
Taking them later means a greater quantity of bud because of the maturity and the extra veg time.
Bless,
DZ
