e40 sockets are available at any decent electrical store/supplier..
Make sure ya get a ceramic bulb holder, the plastic ones could melt using one of these bulbs.

Ebay is also a good place to hunt down a batwing envirolight reflector that has an e40 socket and cable attached...and a reflector is ESSENTIAL for these bulbs or youll waste most of their lighting potential.
You can get em pretty cheap too.

yeah.. theyre good for supplementary lighting to lower branches and the sides of plants..

This is a consideration. They sell something at walmart like this. It will handle 160Watts. So definataly will handle what you are using plus it has a nice big ceramic fixture and reflector. I have one and it was under $10.

There's is all silver and does have a T shaped protective cover is you need it.

i dont really care about lumens, as they have nothing to do with growing plants.

You can NOT put a "Mogul Base" lamp in a household socket... Most of your HID lamps are Mogul Base sockets... Can you fit those in your desk lamp... I did not think so... =P

And regarding lumens... Yes the measurement is not directly related to the light that a plant needs... But unless you are buying LED the only way to compare witch lights will produce more light is by the manufactures lumens rating... If manufactures would use a better rating measurement that would be ideal but they do not so its the best way to compare the efficiency of different lights...

actually, there is. Its called a PAR rating. (Photosynthetically Active Radiation )
Since plants use energy between 400 and 700 nanometers and light in this region is called Photosynthetically Active Radiation or PAR, we could measure the total amount of energy emitted per second in this region and call it PAR watts. This is an objective measure in contrast to lumens which is a subjective measure since it is based on the response of the subjects (humans). PAR watts directly indicates how much light energy is available for plants to use in photosynthesis.

I know... There are other rating that are more closely related as well... I just do not remember what they are called... I ran across them when i was looking into LED lighting...

The thing is that most companies do not provide or even test in these ratings... So for now we have to use the best information we are given even if it is not the best information in our circumstances... =]

yeah, you are right. Most people dont list there par rating. I know envirolights have a 100% par rating. Thats it though. However, even a PAR rating included green light, which is all but wasted by the plant. It seems there should be a measure that focuses primarily around the red and blue NM peaks.
