Smoked up with mom this weekend...

My mom has advanced Alzheimer's disease. We had to sell her home and move her in with my sister a few years ago, as she just couldn't handle living alone any longer. Most care givers for Alzheimer patients will tell you that theirs isn't a smooth decline, rather there's sudden drops in cognition followed by plateaus (if they're lucky). I care for my mom on the weekends to share the burden with my sister, and we noticed another noticeable drop in cognitive functioning coupled with an inability to sleep for more than a couple of hours at a time. She is on several meds, including Donepezil as an ACHE inhibitor for the Alzheimer's. I took her to see her doctor a few weeks ago for a check up and full blood work up, and the doctor is keeping her on the same meds. I've been very curious to see how marijuana would work for her, but each time I had brought it up in the past, she poo-pooed it, stating that it's illegality make her to nervous. I decided to plan a ruse in order to entice her to try it (I'm her medical proxy): I showed her that Illinois just passed a medical marijuana bill (the most restrictive to date), and that her doctor thought it would be a good idea to try some MMJ. I stuffed some of my awesome homegrown OG Kush (this pheno has a nice heady euphoria, followed by a nice all over body stone) into one of her other med bottles, and I told her that I just picked it up from the dispensary on her doctor's prescription. She decided that she would try it! Now, she knew for a long time that I smoke, so I had no trouble breaking out my thick, glass bong with precooler for her: I would start it and get it milky, then have her inhale the smokey tube. She took 3 hits like a champ. In about 5 minutes, she became very verbose and extroverted, and even admitted for the first time that she had smoked when she was in a dance tour company when she was young. That was a revelation :) She seemed more lucid, too, talking about things I haven't heard about from her in years, (she's usually like a broken record with the same old sayings week after week). It was the most enjoyable conversation we've had in many months. I asked her about her hip pain and her arthritis, and she said they weren't bothering her at all. She asked for her doggie bag of take out, and she never does that. That sucked, I was looking forward to polishing off that half a Ruben and fries myself ;) She slept like a log last night, and is sleeping like a log again right now. I texted my sister about all of this and she was thrilled! It will be no problem for me to supply my mom with free dank, Ill let her try all of my strains to see what fits her the best. Do any of you guys have experience with treating Alzheimer's with weed, and do you know of any specific strains that are usually recommended for the disease? Thanks!

I'm not sure, but I forget things sometimes because I'm so ripped! So...

I smoked with my mom for the first time about a year ago! She gets migraines and wanted to stop prescription meds. I got her baked on a few strains while we drove and looked at the fall colors. She didn't enjoy it much. I should have isolated the strains better, but it was kinda sprung on me. And she got what I had. Anyway, Might try a heavy CBd with her rather than high THC.

There has been quite a few studies done now that suggest both THC and CBD are good at slowing and treating the symptoms of Alzheimers.

Maybe i'm just baked, but I can't find anything much about it right now, here is a really old piece of news though (Marijuana may slow Alzheimers)

Good luck to you man, if it works for her then great!

If I remember I'll try to find some updated stuff and edit / re-post here.

Thanks for sharing. Has she smoked regularly since, and if so, has it been an effective treatment for her migraines? A heavy CBD strain is a good idea, I think I may start growing one as a few custies have been asking for it...

Thanks, man. I've read a few studies on the effectiveness of MJ as a treatment for Alzheimer's, but anything you find I'll read...

Cool! If I knew you irl, I'd give you a few ounces of trim to make some butter right now. I haven't done anything with it for the last few harvests, and I have a couple of pounds of it in the freezer :) I'm gonna start making some medibles this week, last time my butter was WAY too strong and one cookie almost made me insane (that was my first time making it). Let me know how it goes...

Pounds of trim?? I can never save up more than a few Oz at a time, I turn that shit into BHO almost immediately. :D

I'm too lazy for that :) I made BHO when I first started growing, it was a big, messy pain is the ass :) Making butter is so much easier, but I was turned off from overdoing it the first time. I'm promising everyone that I'm going to make brownies and cookies, so lots of people would like a dozen or so when I finally get around to doing it (does $5 for a super strong cookie sound fair?). I've got to take a weekend and just bake it all. I have so much trim! Over a paper Whole Foods bag full, I harvest 22 plants every two weeks, so the shit piles up fast...

This thread has inspired me to finally start working on one of the gigantic tupperware containers full of trim I have from my OD.

That's amazing stuff, Tyler. I imagine it is the CBD which is having such a profound effect. It is the component (IIRC) which all of the neurosciences are most interested in for the purposes of protecting the myelin sheath, etc. I wish you luck on this venture, and I would love to hear more findings from your experiment as it proceeds.

I think you're spot on, Heckler. I'm believe it's mostly the CBD, but the high THC content causing some euphoria is great because her emotional default state is worry/anxiety. That seemed to melt away, it's nice to see her in a better mood for the last few days :) I'll update with anything interesting...

Recent research indicates CBD could stimulate stem cells in the brain to regrow as well. Get your mom something high in CBD.

i always tell my mom when she smokes it's like the real her I remember as a lad comes back. It's almost like for a split second she forgets her troubles and becomes that woman I know and respect. Some days I'll make her slow her ass down take a break and smoke. She has ms so ultimately the more control of her body she loses the more control over other things she desires. When she smokes it's almost like it's accepted (her situation) and she is at peace with it. Plus then she turns on some jams and has a good time doing whatever. It's nice, I get to remember how she was when I was young and she gets a mental break from living her life everyday. Not to mention that her hands start working again and you can actually bend her legs freely. We've tried just about every beta blocking medicine out there steroids the whole nine. Yet nothing has the impact of suppressing her ailments like cannabis, and that I'm truly thankful for:)

$10 for a super strong cookie. Remember, just a good cookie is worth $3, no weed involved.

JMO.

I LOVE making BHO, I just use a paint scraper, and a huge pyrex bowl.... no mess! :D And IMO, it's the best product available. Fuck Hash, fuck kief, fuck edibles, fuck tinctures.... lol gimmie that sweet, sweet BHO (or CO2) extraction! :D

I'm sure I'd get better at making bho with practice, and I did like that high. Fucking intense, but I used the gas with that nasty smell, so the taste was awful. $10 for a strong cookie, I like the sound of that. I finna be RICH ;)

that was great writing, i get more open and more funny when i smoke weed and smile a lot more, we don't alztimer in our family, but i defiantly want to do that when i my mom gets old, i may have sneak it into cookies and trick her long before she gets that old.

my nonna has really bad alzhimers, hit her like a tonof bricks. its very sad.
its worse than her just dying.
i wish she would die already i know that sounds horrible.
but she shits in a reclining wheel chair all day cant open her eyes mumbles incohearant words, the nurses cant take too much time to feed her she probably weights 80 lbs.
her neck is all cramped up
she doesnt respond to anything,

alzhimers runs very hard in my family infact is the only sickness we have no one dies in our family, no cancer, no heart disease, no blood problems.
my great zio died , this month adn thats the first death in our family since 2011, when my great nonna died at 102, she was awesome though and
she was the most active 102 year old ive ever met, she used to say in italian
"i wish god would just take me, things have changed so much andi cant keep up with the times, i am too tired and too old , and i would like to just go now please"
the last death over that was my great nonno when i was like 5 so like 1995 but no one loved him he was an asshole my nonna used to get beaten with frozen meat , and he chased people with meat cleavers he was a bad man

its a sickening way to go
