Rider's first foray into LED strip lighting - Samsung H Series GEN3

The pcb layout on those double row F strips are LT-F564B : 16S x 9P, and LT-FB24B : 16S x 18P. If I wire two F564Bs in parallel then that's the same as one FB24B, right? I don't know. It's 6:30am here and the coffee hasn't kicked in to jumpstart my brain. Let me work it out and I'll set it up and test it for you.

I am also in the process of designing my light fixture for my flowering space using the Samsung strips. I'm leaning towards the F Series but just not sure which of the 44" beasts to use, the single or double diode config. I'm not sure in a 4x2 if the double diode FB24B will kick out too much heat. I'm not sure even how many to use. I did think of using a couple of the FB24B's horizontally and maybe 4 of the 22" ones hanging vertically for even better penetration. Any thoughts?

Going with vertical lighting will really depend on how you plan on growing as to its effectiveness. If you have a small area you want to grow a bush in, then it could be great. When you start growing multiple plants it requires rotating them to receive equal light. Or if you plan to scrog, you're probably better off sticking with overhead lighting.

Which I do....yeah, good point. Thanks dude. Think I'm gonna go with 3 x FB24B 3000K and an HLG-320H-C2100A. That should be 300W which in a 4x2 is enough, maybe even a little too much but better over than under :)

@StonerCol, I think you're on the money. Around 300 watts at a very reasonable price point, and with the A version you should be able to kick it up a bit closer to the 2260mA those strips are spec'ed at. I just completed the test run by wiring the 564s in series/parallel and ran them on a 320H-2100B and they held right at 65C. Three of the FB24B strips and that driver are an excellent match. Good bang for the buck. That's the way I'm going as well for my grow expansion. The H Series strips are going in my shop.

Awesome!! Thanks very much for that info/confirmation...it really is appreciated. I've been going round and round in circles trying to decide between the various Samsung and Bridgelux strips, size, driver.....comparing price/output etc etc....it was driving me nuts :D

Yeah the aformentioned driver will mean that the strips run a little under max current but that's no bad thing, it's like 5% or so. I've priced up 3 FB24B's and the driver and it comes to £205 which for 300W of quality light from those diodes is fantastic. I'm sure they are the same diodes used in the Quantum Boards and we've all seen the bud they produce. Well happy :)

I know the Quantum boards are using all S6 chips. Not too sure about the Samsung strips because the product tag says S07. Anyone have any idea what that means?
Apparently 07 is the "Binning group" and the S stands for Samsung, according to the data sheet :)

That's weird because the only place I see S7 bins being used is on 70CRI strips, but these are def 80CRI strips. So... S7 for the win?

The real deal would be to run four FB24B strips in parallel on a HLG-480H-48A. You could run them at 2.5A each for a total of about 475W, and that's still only 70% of the max amperage of the strips. Or dim them down and pretend that you're a reasonable human being. Who are you kidding... you're going to blast them and you know it.

Change of plans. Since I have two of the HLG-600H-48A drivers I'm going to use them. It gives me the flexibility of running from three to six of the FB24B led lights running in parallel per driver. Figure 100W per strip if driven at 2240mA each, until you hit six strips where you top out at about 550W. Or run five strips and push them to 2.4A each and you'll hit about 550W. Dimming is always an option! It'll be similar in output to the HLG 550 (but not nearly as sexy) with more flexibility in coverage.

Yes, Regis, that's my final answer.

Great build man! I'm planning to run 2x F564B on the 4.600 serrated heatsink from heatsinkusa, but not sure if I should drive them close to nominal with 1.05A in series or bump em up to 1.4A. I do my builds in series only - I don't like parralel due to Amps being pushed to the rest of the chips if 1 string/cob fail - CC drivers maybe..

I lied. They're not the 44" FB24B strips. For future flexibility I went with 22" F564Bs combined to make a FB24B with enough room between them to cut the aluminum channel in half. Also, I must have had a brain fart because these FBs are mounted way too close together. At 400W it needs to be spread out over a 2x4 area. Back to the drawing board.
Each of the four strip psuedo-FB24B assemblies will be driven by an HLG-600H-48A.

Better. Each of these two systems is designed to cover a 2x4 area. I know it seems like a lot of light but I grow with CO2, and they can always be dialed way down. I'll run my old 16 CXB3590 system (1200W max) in one side and 8 FB24B strips (1000W? max) on the other. I'm liking that I'll be able to run the Samsungs low and soft. The Crees create too much of a hotspot under the COB to run them very close to the canopy.

I took the four F series strips to 90% of rated max, using an HLG-600H-48A.

658W at the lights. 670W at the wall. I wouldn’t care to run them that hard but, damn, that’s a lot of light energy.
When run at a very much more reasonable 300W it provides 37.5W per foot square and the strips maintain 25C.
Such beautiful, uniform coverage. I’m stoked!
