Return of Mass Layoffs a Grim Sign for U.S. Workers

Putting pressure on an already lousy job market, the mass layoff is making a comeback. In the past week, Cisco, Lockheed Martin and Borders announced a combined 23,000 in job cuts. (See: Another Retailer Bites the Dust: Borders Doomed by Amazon Deal, Davidowitz Says)

Those announcements follow 41,432 in planned cuts in June, up 11.6% from May and 5.3% vs. a year earlier, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

Meanwhile, state and local governments have cut 142,000 jobs this year, The WSJ reports, and Wall Street is braced for another round of cutbacks. This week, Goldman Sachs announced plans to let go 1000 fixed-income traders.

If these trends continue, we may soon be talking about losses in the monthly employment data -- not just disappointing growth, says Howard Davidowitz, CEO of Davidowitz & Associates

"Everything in business is confidence," Davidowitz says. "You lose confidence and businesses can't deal with that [and] who could have confidence with what's going on in Washington?"

Davidowitz is bipartisan in his criticism, calling the U.S. political system "dysfunctional and deranged." (See: "A Bunch of Morons in Washington": Howard Davidowitz Handicaps the Debt Ceiling Debate)

Still, the restructuring expert is a longtime and vocal critic of President Obama: "There has never been in a situation in my lifetime where a guy increases the debt by 40%, GDP growth is on the way down, Food Stamps are up, millions more are unemployed -- and to accomplish this we spent $4 trillion."

In This Time is Different, co-authors Ken Rogoff and Carmen Reinhart demonstrate that financial crises are typically followed by severe recessions, slow recoveries, subpar growth and greater frequency of recessions in the decade following the crisis. (See: Bernanke In Denial About Economy's Fate, Vincent Reinhart Says)

"No one believes the economy, Obama or not, is going to improve," my Breakout colleague Jeff Macke says in the accompanying clip. "Time [is] the only thing that heals."

What is obvious is this for anyone with even slight intelligence:

Obama is trying to collapse the government on purpose to usher in an American Socialist state that stagnates like Russia & oppresses its people like China.

He sees a day when he is old an grey and is hailed as the father of American Socialism

The only thing that prevents this nation from going into a full blown cival war are that 2012 elections. Without them there would be inssurection across our nation and secession and that would lead to war.

lol and people wonder why they want to take your guns away. its quite obvious what the long term plan is.

Seems a little bit like a jump to conclusions...but at the same time our government is devious and i would not put it past the bastards. There cant be any leader or leaders who are actualy honest and follow through with what they say these days. Its always about the bottom line $$$=power=control those in control of the flow of $$$ can do just about anything sadly enough. The love of money is the root of 99% of the evil in this world, the rest is simply chaos from those who want to see everything burn.

do americans blame obama for the lack of jobs in the states.
alot of people in the uk blame our government for the lack of jobs
the simple fact is alot of the jobs that your boys and girls used to do along with british workers, are being subbed out to the chinese, by greedy get rich quick merchants and people wanting cheap goods, that aren't worth a wank
the only time the british economy is in growth is when the constuction industry is build houses for the many immagrants that come to our coutry to bleed our welfare system dry.
all the factories in the uk are being knocked down one by one as we loose another manufacturing industry to the chinese, they build houses in there place, what i would like to know is where are these people that are going to be living in these new house going to work.
unless we start buying goods made in the countries we live in there aint gonna be any jobs

You do realize the very notion of profit is to get more out than you put in. This in and of itself is parasitic behaviour.

The most clear and reasoned way to do things is no borders, no politicians, no taxes, pure localized democracy(likely through an online forum of some scope). Street Police would be a 8 year term of service, paid very well with mode of currency that is extremely popular because of its inherently low production rate(which in turn increases value further reducing production rates), and retraining when the 8 years are up. All of the factories and warehouses and retail stores and distribution operations and ect. ect. ect. still exist, and people exist that can fill those jobs. So whats next.....

Lets stop waiting for these big bosses and money grubber to tell us what to do and when, when in most cases we already know how to do it.

We could have a completely equitable and functioning world society very easily. Stop getting scared.

im not scared, im doing somthing about it man

profit is not getting more than you put in.

because if I buy weed for $10 and then turn around and sell it for $10 Im not getting paid for my time risk and effort. and the amount I deserve for my time, risk and effort not cannot be standardized or set.

its an arbitrary numer, for exampole, no one can say I should make $5 off this transaction and that is all my work is worth. I may think im worth more and think i should make $10 off this transaction

theres no one who can dictate that to me in a free society.

thats why it is dictated by the market.

the market is always the best decider of profits

not some dictator in his office in a city far away

none of this is obamas fault. it was all already happening when he got into office, he didn't make it happen. and no, i don't love him or anything, i didn't vote so i shouldn't complain.
