Pollen for Sale?

Someone I know with about 40 years experience (association will go unmentioned) explained to me a few weeks ago that back in "his day" they would isolate the male, take an empty bread bag, and find a branch with ready to pop pollen balls on it, and wrap the bag around that branch and rubberband it around. Shake the branch until the pollen fell off into the bag, remove bag, place said bag over a female flower, again rubberband the bag to the branch, and shake. Remove bag and wait until harvest. End result? One seeded bud with enough for next years grow.

would be interested in buying quality pollen, from a proven line of genetics, chosen by me, to reseed an old clone strain i have

Males that are worthwhile to breed are hard to come by and when a decent grower does come by these males most will not be willing to sell what makes their whole seed company. Imagine if everybody had a good breeders pollen their new strains wouldn't mean s**t to anybody because you can take that same pollen and same female and make it yourself.

I was reading some of subcool's forums recently and he said he has only found 6 worthy males in 30+ years and 2 have died so he only has 4 worthy males on which his whole seedbank relys on

Dont get me wrong I would love to buy pollen and create my own strains but worthy males are so hard to come by I doubt any breeder would give up their pollen for a few bucks

It is a good idea but don't expect the breeders to do that because of losing seed sales. I just hand pollinated another of my MTF autos this week and she's already getting really puffy. I had a really nice looking girl that I chose to give me my next batch of seed so I dusted her ass really good; now she's got bud/seed about 2" in diameter almost all the way up. I had 3 nice males that I grew off (a safe distance from the girls) and when they were mature, I chopped them and harvested the pollen. I mixed some fine flour with the pollen with a 2:1 ratio (roughly) and keep it in a 35mm film canister and apply it with a dry, sable artists' brush.
Hey Pot, My dear old friend! Long time no hear. Hope all is well with you. I appreciate your post, but as I mentioned above, my set up just will not allow for a stud farm on the side, LOL.
Also, what I envision, is access to MANY, good quality strains and genetics, in a "For Dummies", 1-shot deal. Believe me, there are a lot of us out here not capable of avoiding getting the contents of said canister ALL over the entire grow area with say, a big bodacious sneeze or something equally disasterous....LOL...I know...a little over the top, but you see what I mean. I want no muss, no fuss, bata bing, bata bam, 1 bud knocked up, toss the condom, no storage of anything, Clean, neat, & sweet.
Bob Marley brings the point that the big commercial breeders seem to have a very limited amount of pollen of any worth, and would be loath to part with any. So here, I must to confess to ignorance on the ways and holdings of those cannabis gods. Perhaps this would be
Game, Set & Match for this idea. But before I throw the in towel, I want to do a little checking into this aspect of the seed business.
Good luck & good grow to all.......BB

Good to hear from you again too my friend! Having a cannabis "sperm bank" is a great idea. I'm not even sure it would be illegal, LOL. But if Big Ed says it's hard to come by and Bob Marley... then I guess it is. I'm sure I've never even seen an outstanding male plant, probably never will.

The reason for mixing the pollen with flour is because it only takes one grain of pollen to fertilize a pistil. If you "cut" it with flour, it doesn't do anything except extend your pollen. Uncle Ben cuts his 4:1. I don't have enough females to knock up so I went a lot less.

Awesome idea here, wish I had the means and know-how to do something with it but the last couple years were rough and I don't live in a place where I could have a successful attempt anymore. My old house would've been perfect for trying something like this but I didn't get the growing bug until recently (after selling and moving). I have been reading everything I can get my eyes on ever since and only wish I had thought about it a lot earlier. May not have had to sell my old place, lol.

I couldv'e dedicated an air conditioned 11'X12' room to my grow in my old house and I could've had a small outdoor grow in the backyard too without having to worry too much.

Oh well...

I just spent about 2 hours sending email to 16 seed houses, requesting info regarding male pollen. It will probably a week or 2 before I get much in the way of response. I will post when I have something...........BB

Well, by golly some of these folks are FAST! Got a reply from DNA Genetics and Magus. I guess my idea isn't dead, but, LOL, pretty much on life support. I will post more as it comes in..........BB

hey there,
unfortunately we do not trade pollen or sell it:(
but we have kicked the idea around of making Male seeds or as we call it (stud farming that way people can have the pure male seed line.. but we have just kicked the idea around ...

im sure that there alot of groers out there that would freely give up some males/pollen from there parent stock.

i wish you the best of luck on your mission
respect,
DNA

MAGUS to me
Hello Gary,

Nice to hear from you, I'm not registered at Rollitup, but I do know about it and visit/read quite frequently.

I can understand your interest or "pipe dream" but I'm afraid it will stay a dream as I can't see it commercially viable.
The relative low demand/turnover combined with rather high production costs and low/short shelf-life issues, will make it pretty much impossible to do this.
The producer could work on a register/application base and produce just one time and ship out to the customers that have registered or applied for it all at the same time to combat the shelf-life issue.
But even in that case those problems get transferred to the customer unless the receiving plants are in optimum flower stage exactly at the time of receiving the pollen.
All possible measurements to combat this, like keeping the pollen frozen and ship on dry ice are very expensive and require a level of professionalism that's not really common/standard within this industry.

The closest thing that's possible (in theory) would be to develop an all male line so those that need pollen can grow out only a few plants to be sure of a good pollen source, but even that would cost a lot of time and investment so the price would be high.
Since it would also be a "niche" market, turnover will be low and therefore (again) the result would be an even higher retail price, most likely high enough that most will prefer to take their chances (50/50) with the regular lines.
The only potential benefit for a company to do this would be for prestige as in showing of their skill, and although I must admit that the thought of that is rather appealing, the price is to high for me personally.
You need to find one with a bigger ego, a bigger wallet, or both lol.

To put it short, a great idea, especially in the eyes of those that want to fiddle with breeding a bit as a hobby but don't like to grow a lot of plants because of the risk involved, but it's not possible to even reach/approach brake-even i.m.o.
We will have to wait until things get fully legalised before things like this can be done (bring on Utopia), I'm sure the moment that happens communities like rollitup will have special forums or some sort of market place where members can exchange all kinds of material, seeds, cuttings, and maybe even pollen.
I'm sorry to burst your balloon as it is a nice one, but I don't think its feasible.

Regards,
Gerrit

cool thread, good work on actually emailing the seed banks. I wish more people would do a little work like that.
I just wanted to add one thing, you say you want to keep your genetics from your plant that is almost ready to harvest, have you considered re-vegging it? I've done it a few times and its not hard. I've taken clones from flowering plants too and not had any problems, but that probaly a discussion for another thread .

Yeah you can take clones from floerwing plants, it just takes a little longer for them to get going. They have to root AND revert back to veg but other than it taking a little longer it doesn't seem that there are any ill effects on the plant quality. "Mygirls" on this forum take most of his clones from his flowering plants.

This thread started off rather badly, with sarcasm & negativity.
But then, a few folks who seem to share my vision, have joined in
with intelligent, insightful comments. I thank you ALL for that.

As you can infer from the mail I received from DNA & Magus, the "idea" is pretty much on the shelf. I admit to ignorance and confusion regarding the "shelf life" of pollen. I have read that Sub Cool has a 20+ year old male line going on. Since the pollen can't be that old, he must have a way to annually recycle these boys. But my God, for 20 years?
Thats not just a "green thumb", thats botanically AMAZING! LOL.
So now I will begin to educate myself in "the way of pollen", I need to know more! Back in the day, we would say...Keep on Truck'n.
Good luck & good grow.......BB bongsmilie

Yep, Subcool is the man! I was not aware of pollen being so delicate and the shelf life being so short. Hey, nothing ventured, nothing gained my friend. Oh, things are back on for the move to you know where! It probably won't happen soon but at least by the end of the year.

I can tell you that I learned something from stopping here to read this thread, a couple of things actually. It also inspired me to take a little break from what I've been researching to learn a little more about pollen, pollen collecting and storage and also about fertilizing females.

Thank you for sparking my interest regarding this aspect of cultivation.

well last night i had the same idea as you...i was just sitting there thinking about making my own seed and thought it would be bad ass if someone sold pollen of known genes..so i googled (marijuana pollen for sale) and it brought me to this thread...and after reading ur whole thread i guess it aint gona happin..... later bro

Great idea, I had this thought also and found this thread. The way I figure it is if there was a way to profit from it then it would have been done already. Legalization could pave the way though!

I think its a great idea! I say lets start a business.
It's a great idea that's crossed my mind as well several times in the last couple years.

I think pollen from stable, ibl strains would be at a premium. You can essentially count the strains worthy of ibl title on 3 hands. Seems that if this type of enterprise were to come online, even offering pollen of several ibl's would be a service.

I've got a great amount of C99 BG F1 pollen (about 20% pollen to 80% flour) freshly frozen to start this venture.

I'm a cali med patient and I don't think pollen contains THC (on the other hand seeds don't either) but what are the legalities starting a venture like this serving the cali med community?

My guess would be that you'd have to have the same licensing that's required for a coop and only do face to face med patient transactions...

Anybody else?

I'm thinking hang on till Nov. 2, then we have a lot more information to work with. If the legalization happens, I am considering moving to the foothills and start a "Stud Farm" with male plants as the primary crop, I'm sure you know where I'm going with this.....LOL.
Good luck & good grow.......BB

this is a great idea! I would l;ove to be able to have access to some great males juice and knock up some ladies cross breed etc. Somebody should really start their own Stud Farm and hell advertise here on RIU:)
