Police chopperssensing heat

Paranoia spreads like fire in this place, so I am just curious.
At what temperature can a sensor from the air pick it up? Is it able to get through concrete and or plaster? Would a 1000w do it? if the temperature in the room is kept down, would any heat sensors still be able to pick up the source of the heat, say the bulb?
I have seen the choppers alot lately. I am sure it is not for me, but would liek to make sure that I dont give them any reason to legally enter my home. High heat wpould be probable cause I am sure.

you don't have to worry about the heat from lights...maryjane in a sufficient quantity..gives off heat to infa reds..on copters.

I am only growing a hanful of smaller plants. as long as the mh doesnt give off any considerable source of heat, i think i will be allright.
Can someone tell me what they do look for?

that is what i am hoping. I am sure i was being paranoid, but the thing circled nearly over my house 3 or 4 times in a row. Kinda freaked me out.

well you shouldnt worry too much.... unless you are growing 200000 plants with 20 1k watters

How will you prove they used it if they dont tell you?
Don't ask me:confused: I'm not a cop *nervously look around*...Anyway I'm pretty sure they won't look for IR readings through your roof just randomley unless your house is glowing like an alien invasion.

they have to share info with you lawyer....if not its unlawful

..... pls blv if they found your grow op with IR....you will know.

they will do a knock and talk. dont open the damn door. if they have a warrant they would already be coming in. with a warrant they dont need you to open the door. they could kick that fucker in.

dip out the back! sounds like fun:twisted: I like to run from "authority figures" and dogs (no idea why).

Yeah

I heard on here somewhere that your average desktop computer uses way more electricity and puts off way more heat than a 1000w.

the police IR camera's dont pick up indoor grows because of two things..maybe 3

1. IR is blocked by glass most light goes thru it, but IR cannot penetrate your windows

2. IR is not the same as thermal, IR is the light that is just outside of the visible spectrum, thermal is heat....

3. If in fact they were using thermal, that idea was completely shitted on by the supreme court - saying that no thermal image from private property or inside a home could be used as evidence in obtaining a search warrant....

i posted in a thread about this earlier in the outdoor grow threads, and have since done a decent amount of research....there is no real way to fool the IR/thermal cameras either, just stay with the knowledge that all plants have their own heat, if you grow outside try to place them near small cedars or under larger cedars, they have a similar heat signature, maybe near a bunch f rocks that get hot in the sun....you get the point, without getting too into this topic, they cant search your house or bust you based on a heat spot in your home, and the IR cameras cant even get thru your glass-let alone your foundation or walls.

not to doubt any, but i do see alot of people on here spout what they don't know. is this stuff all really true?If it is, that is more info than i have seen anywhere else on it.

to the best of my knowledge it is all true, i went and researched on the best place i could think of....a "paranoid American watch group" forum the people who fear our government more than iraqi civilians....i also looked into plant heat signatures, and found a lot of info about which heat sigs are similar, its all out there in cyberspace, if you'd like to double check go thru google and start readin!

on a side not i also asked ....well i cant really say who he is...but he's very much "in the know" of police helo's and operations....he had also told me about the supreme court barring heat sigs in houses from search warrants(I'm not saying if you have a field of green in your back yard they cant get a warrant...but if it's not very visible it wont hold up)

and some links to discussions i ran across, i believe this first one they also talk about the ruling that said they couldnt use thermal for busts....

Defeat Thermal Imaging , page 1

and this one is some info on thermal viewers along with a history and some other boribg stuff you don't need to read, but you can if you're really worried i suppose.

hope this helps

It is a common misconception marijuana plants give off heat. The plants temperature (heat generated) is going to depend on the sunlight hitting it/wind speed etc. Plants are identified outdoors by air usually two ways: plain eyesight and remote sensing.

Many who grow outside want to make sure that there plants get as much sun as possible. So what do they do? They clear out the vegetation. From the air you can see the empty spot in a tree canopy and the plants growing in it. They have people that are trained to identify anything from the air.

The other method is called remote sensing. Remote sensing uses a camera but instead of seeing infrared (thermal signatures), they can adjust it to a specified wavelength.

remote sensing

This article explains this in more detail (skip down to the bottom). You see the camera they use looks for the plant's specteral signature. That is the amount of radiation that is absorbed and reflected off the plant. Marijuana reflects/absorbs certain wavelengths of light. This is what they look for. They don't look for the heat coming off a plant.

If you want to read more about the technology:
Remote Sensing Tutorial Table of Contents

If you want to learn more about different spectral signatures:
google "spectral signatures vegetation"

If you wanted to see plants through a thermal cameral (FLIR), check out this pic:
http://www.imaging1.com/M1_Thermal_SPI_DHS_Image.gif
You see the only thing in that picture that is really noticable is the guy in the center, not the plants around him.

Plants don't have "heat signatures". Now some county goverments do thermal imaging from the air, but it isn't to spot plants. It is to make sure building insulation/ factory waste output is up to spec.

billy bob, im glad that you posted that it is very useful info, though i believe everything gives off a distinct heat sig, its not that marijuana is in more sun that it's hotter, but that it is something within the plants genetics, im not a botanist and i dont pretend to know what im talking about, i can only make assumptions based on what i see, but i have seen thermal shots of plants giving off heat, they certainly dont glow bright white like a human would but they aren't black spots in the pictures either which would indicate a "cold" area...in that pic you can still differentiate between a ree in the background what looks like a palm type bush in the foreground and the road and walls and other vegetation .....if none had a heat sig you would see a bright white figure with simple dull grey all around right?

also from what i understand IR is not the same as thermal, IR is just a different spectrum not visible to the naked eye...i could be wrong...

good info either way

Well the thing is that you can differentiate between some plants in an IR/thermal camera. It is not genetics though. The plant could be out in the sun/ next to an animal or next to a/c unit. These would all be circumstances that would cause a plant to be warmer than the surrounding area; it just wouldn't stick out that prominently. If a helicopter was flying around it would be a lot harder to spot a pot plant using solely a FLIR camera.

Also thermal and IR are the same thing:
