I have seen it work, but only with classical. I would Imagine that instermental (like some soft Buckethead cd's; Electric tears, Population override, and Elephantman's alarmclock) would work. I'm ganna try it and I'll let ya know.

i've been playing classical and marley for years to my ladies with great success!! just because you can't see it, doen't mean it doesn't work...i know it's been proven that playing classical music to babies in the woom is beneficial, so why not plants?....i have a huge playlist thats on loop 24/7 in my garden...plants are living things and they respond to the vibrations and maybe even the positive vibes....

Possibly the vibrations moving through the air and ground cause the stem to vibrate. This would allow the soil to stay loose and air to move between the soil as it vibrates. The plant itself would be under tiny amounts of stress, as we know strss causes the plant to grow to compensate. (as we do with fans blowing air across them).

This is all guessing though lol...maybe they do have ears?

Great responses so far. I have seen the mythbuster's episode but there are many studies on the web about this topic and I just wondered how many used music in this way.

Thanks,

Venny

The reason the birds start to sing before the sun rises is to make the plants grow....Try sounds of nature before lights come on...lol...thats my 2 cents.

It works with babies bc they are humans with ears and brains and can process sound. Plants are not. There could be some relation to the vibration but its unlikely that it would make a difference unless the music was extemely loud. Even then, it could only be because of the vibrations and not bc of the fact that it is music.

Mythbusters tested this and had results but their experiment was far from controlled. WAAAY too many variables to be able to say it works. And from a scientific standpoint there is zero reason to say it should have any affect. And even if it did cause minimal effects, it wouldnt be close to enough to make up the cost of energy needed to play the music throughout the growth of the plant.

Ever heard of "tamping?" It is common practice in many types of construction to use vibration to do the exact opposite of what you have implied. Vibrations move the denser materials closer together and the air and lighter materials up and out. It is probably most common in cement and concrete work where vibration is used to remove air before the cement is left to harden and cure. Any road or land that has a building above it was at one time "super-vibrated" in order to pack and sturdy it.

Here is some interesting information on the topic. cited from this page

http://maharishi-programmes.globalgoodnews.com/vedic-music/research.html

In the early 1950’s, Dr T. C. N. Singh of the Department of Botany at Annamalai University, Madras, India, discovered under microscope that plant protoplasm was moving faster in the cell as a result of the sound produced by an electric tuning fork. This discovery led to his conclusion that sound must have some effect on the metabolic activities of the plant cell.
Inspired by these results and by stories of ancient sages who were able to induce plants to blossom by intoning certain Ragas (melodies) of Gandharva Veda, Dr Singh began a series of experiments on a large number of species, such as common astors, petunias, cosmos, and white spider lillies, along with food plants such as sesame, radishes, and sweet potatoes. For several weeks, just before sunrise, he played to each of these species more than six Gandharva Veda Ragas, one per experiment. The music lasted half an hour daily, scaled at a high pitch, with frequencies between 100 and 600 cycles per second. It was played on several traditional Gandharva Veda instruments—the flute, violin harmonium, and veena.
From the results of this experiment he was able to state that he had proven, beyond any shadow of doubt, that Gandharva Veda sound waves affect the growth, flowering, fruiting, and seed-yields of plants.
From 1960 to 1963, Dr Singh played the Gandharva Veda Charukesi Raga via a loudspeaker on a gramophone to six varieties of early, medium, and late ‘paddy rice’, growing in the fields of seven villages. They yielded harvests ranging consistently, from 25% to 60% higher than the regional average.

wow, thank you mr. scientist tdiddy!! it looks like we got a know it all on our hands! plants don't have brains and ears but aren't they living things?? i've known many master growers that played classical music to their plants on some grows and then off on others, and they all swear that the plants with music were healthier and bigger...so i've always done it and my plants are super dank, and don't tell me bout the energy it takes to run a small ipod dock, miniscule...to each his own i guess, but i'll never stop!! peace

i talk to plants all the time. and they talk back to me. just because a plant doesnt have ears or a mouth doesnt mean it has no consciousness.

I'm not saying stop doing it. You can believe whatever you want. I'm just telling you that it is a waste of time. There might be some truth to vibrations doing something, but half-hour a day from a quiet ipod isn't gonna do it. There's more of a difference in vibration throughout the day by merely comparing a country grow to a city grow. Just because you think it makes a difference doesn't mean it does. There are too many variables that you cant account for. But how about this... You grow a few plants in your house, maybe make a little money. There are companies all over the world making billions from various crops every year, and they invest millions into doing everything they can to improve their operation and make more money with less effort. Can you guess what they're not doing?
