The "greehouse method" worked best for me, dropped seed in shot glass of distilled water for 48 hrs then solo cup, saran wrap wet media, 24 hrs later bingo up she came, remove plastic at the first sign of ground breaking. Let my buddies know about this method. Only 1 out of more than 60 seeds didn't pop, that's because it was way past its prime (old bag seed).

Or you could just put em in a box with some holes in it. It will keep in the humidity with a little air flow, keep it dark, and you can open it to see and then close it again. I never look until 48 hours later. I get butterflies before i open it hahahaa.

I never did understand all this complication on something as simple as planting a seed.

Poke a hole in dirt, drop in seed, cover. Its not hard.

These extra steps are only required in certain situations like planting a very old seed.

OP,

yeah, I don't think there's any problem with starting seeds that way.

What I did was go to McDonald's and a few of those clear plastic cups that has the dome shaped lids and then use that for my mini greenhouse. I just cover the hole in the dome lid with some tape and then pull the tape back to vent in some fresh air. The dome pretty much holds in the humidity and when the seedlings start to root, you can see the roots through the clear plastic cup! That way, you know when they are rooted enough to transplant. If you're concerned about light getting to the roots….don't be. They won't be in those cups long enough for a little bit of light to make any difference. If you're still concerned about it, you can always cut up an old sock and make a sleeve to go over it.

Everybody has got "their" way - like mine which I soak for 24 h then paper towel method
( it's my old faithful way ) to do it. You CAN have bad seeds that won't thrive or maybe just mishandling ? The BABY taproot should not come into contact with hands or other surfaces because of its sensitive nature.

Here is use a simple paper towel method :

I also mist the soil ( seed hole ) ONLY ! I do not water ( mist ) for a couple days.
Until a sprout pushes up on her own. Don't flood the container , you CAN KILL the seedling or even drown it. Leave it alone for a few days. You can add Saran Wrap to cover container make a humidity dome condition. If you like.

Here is a Water soak straight to soil seed. :
No watering / only a light mist to topsoil then plant into container.

If you lost three healthy fresh seeds you did something wrong. No need to complicate it more. Just figure out what you did wrong. I would say to much moisture.
no I think they was bad but not for sure they never cracked open at all i ordered 4 autoflowers they did fine and my white widow seeds did good to, first time i ordered from sick meds and there seeds did not crack,, and they looked imature as hell they had a white color to them and my gf put them beside the tv box with the rest of the dvds and that box gets rile warm i got to germ seeds the next shelf up and its still 84f to 85 f up there i have a filling they cooked for 2 weeks and i did not know it till i stuck a thermostat beside it,, i switched cable companies i wend from dish tv back so cable and there box gets way hotter then the one i use to germ seeds on top of and i did not know that

any one have any luck planting seeds straight in the soil??? i want to leave seeds in cup of water for 24 hr then
sweat them out by just planting in soil after 24h in the water then putting plastic wrap over cups till they pop out of soil , is this just as good as paper towl...
??and will leaving my led grow light on them hurt seeds under dirt, i do not put seeds far under soil at all so i say a little light can still reach seedlings
I planted 6 seeds in red solo cups for my first time. I used roots organic soil and i watered it down really well. Placed it under a 6 bulb t5 fixture with 18/6 light schedule. 5/6 sprouted healthy looking baby leaves. I don't know if it's the right way, but it's the way I'll do it for now on.

That was the problem. Immature seeds.

I advise against using domes or blocking air. Excess moisture is not good.

At most, when sprouting in solo cups under strong lighting, I lay a cardboard circle on the cups until they break soil. In my case it is because I use sand in my soil mix and the top layer dries out fast.

In the garden all the seeds I plant, I plant then water and leave them. They might not get water for a while.

I save my own seeds. Close to 100% sprout.

Cannabis is a hearty plant. It has adapted to just about every climate on earth.

I get that seeds cost money. When a seed sprouts it developes many very fine roots (root hairs). These are very sensitive and can be damaged easily. The extra steps like using paper towels can damage them.

Its a seed. It is meant to grow in soil. When I said poke a hole and plant it, it wasn't random.

The less steps and handling, the lower the chance of damage.

I can only tell you from my experience. I used to always do paper towel method, but sometimes taproot got damaged, or seeds turned mush from either lack of oxygen or too much heat. So I started planting directly into moist soil, cover with humidity dome but not fully sealed, and keep temps 75F. In like 2-3 days they always come up. It's been faster than paper towel method for me.

I see no reason to use another method if nature's way is faster, easier and less steps.

100% germ rate in soil here, i start in 1 or 2 gallons smarties. Takes anywhere from 3-6 days to sprout. I only have issues with old/improperly stored beans.
My best results are planting directly in the final pot. I planted in ocean forest + perlite, watered, covered with a clear to-go plate dome after misting the underside and had seedlings within 3 days. 100% success rate so far.

I've tried doing the tray and dome + soil free media mix in small pots (I added a little soil) and my results have been embarrassing.

If you have the room, plant them in your big girl pots.

Also, I find that balls to the wall lighting is not beneficial for photo period seedlings. Even my auto flowers get a bit of darkness. I think a lot of my problems came from trying to make my plants too comfortable.

I'd say 18-20 hours of light and let them stretch a bit. Don't push the lights close, even if they're cool. My autoflower seedlings started with the MH 3 feet away and the tray and dome seedlings were maybe a foot or less.
