Green tips only, ammunition that is surplus or excess from the government stores. Actual 5.56 and 223 ammunition is completely unchanged.


You just cannot purchase surplus anymore, that sucks. Anyone who shoots regularly will have their wallet hit a bit, other then that no one should care.

In other words, unless you regularly purchase surplus government ammunition this doesn't have an effect on you.

Some green tips are steel jacketed, it is a wishy washy reason but makes sense. I wonder where it will all go instead of being sold to US civilians.

The sticking point, in my mind, is that once our country starts banning ammo capable of penetrating body armor, the door is open to more bans.

Here in Kali we have to hunt with non-tox ammo, almost all of which will penetrate soft body armor. If penetrating body armor is the standard, what am I supposed to hunt with?

Just wondering...Where is a good place to hunt in Cali? Lived here my whole life and never really thought about it...Then again, i feel bad when I swat a fly.........

5.56 won't penetrate body armor, at least not the body armor used by US military (and police) personnel.

All depends upon what you are seeking. There's still a little decent hunting left in the state.

Armor piercing rounds have been against the law for civilian to possess since 1986. Just because a round CAN penetrate armor does not make it a proper AP round.

Armor-Piercing Ammunition
Federal law prohibits the manufacture, importation, sale or delivery of armor-piercing ammunition, with very limited exceptions.10 In particular, specific exceptions exist for armor-piercing ammunition that is manufactured for certain federal and state government divisions, exportation, or testing.11 The Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) may also exempt certain armor-piercing ammunition primarily intended for sporting or industrial purposes.12

Armor-piercing ammunition, sometimes referred to as metal-piercing ammunition, is ammunition that is designed primarily to penetrate metal or armor, including body armor commonly worn by police officers. Under federal law, armor-piercing ammunition is defined as any projectile or projectile core that may be used in a handgun and that is constructed entirely from one or a combination of tungsten alloys, steel, iron, brass, bronze, beryllium copper, or depleted uranium.15 In addition, armor-piercing ammunition is defined as a full jacketed projectile “larger than .22 caliber designed and intended for use in a handgun and whose jacket has a weight of more than 25 percent of the total weight of the projectile.”Id. Pardon? I'm too high for that one, Haha, I live by the beach, but have traversed all over the state. Practically lived in Big Sur, still my favorite place on the planet that I've been to so far.
