NY purple widow outdoor 2009

Hey all,

sQUALLE here, a long time ROI reader. This is my second grow attempt so I figured I'd share the wealth and get some feedback from starting a thread.

Anyways, right now I have 35 seedlings growing at 7 and 5 days old in a greenhouse. I used the paper towel method to germ. The strains are as follows: 8 purple widow (marijuana-seeds.nl) 4 maroc x afghan (free with order) and 23 bagseeds from decent bud.

The seedlings seem to be a bit stretchy with small leaves for this age, and I suspect it is due to lighting constraints. They currently get only about 6-7 hours of direct sunlight a day, due to shade from trees, so I was considering moving them outside now to increase growth rates.

After this, within 3 weeks I plan to transplant them to their permanent hidden in ground locations, complete with automatic irrigation systems

My main concern now is lighting and outdoor slugs, so I plan to put shingles under the trays to protect these babies.

Pics should be up within a few hours and feedback on the plants and my strategy would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

sQUALLE

Here are some photos- my apologies for the low quality- they are taken from a cell phone. Better pictures and more updates soon to come.

The stretchier ones are the bagseeds I planted earliest (1 week old) and the second flat has the purps, maroc x afghan and a few bagseeds

are you vegging them indoors before releasing them outside? if so and if you have the ability to lower the light, DO SO you never want to start out with that much streach, If u are vegging with a cool burning CFL then u should being the light within 4 inches of your plants. im gonna subscrib, as i am a follow east coast grower, and this is my 1st outdoor grow (always been an indoor DWC guy, used to live in denver).

Good luck man, keep us updated! and be SAFE!

mpgkush, unfortunately I cannot start them indoors because I have no place and it is too risky that way in my situation. As I said, they are in a greenhouse which has minor problems with shade. The really stretched ones were started during cloudy weather and originally in a place which received even less sunlight than the current location. I shall be moving them to a full sun location tomorow, as weather should be in the 70s.

Today was actually quite hot, it got up to around ninty, but I misted them twice and keep them under the domes which seems to reduce temperatures quite a bit.

Sounds good. just remember don't mist then or get the leaves wet with there is gonna be a prolong period of direct sunlight. at temps like that (90s) you will most likely burn the leaves.

wait, how would misting the leaves lead to burning? wouldnt the lowered temps and increased moisture reduce the risk of burning the plant? It got up to 90 outside, but I honestly dont know the temp of the plants, maybe I should invest in a thermometer.

More pics to come later today

misting it good when they are slightly shaded. if they are wet, then the beads of water will at as a magnifying glass and cause burning in spots.

Heres some pics from yesterday- at days 9 and 11 for the 2 trays. They are still seeming pretty stretchy but the leaf formation is coming along.

I was considering adding more soil to support the stems so that they dont break when exposed to wind/ are moved. Any other ideas on how to deal with the stretching problem?

Also pictured is the tupperware I am using for a humidity dome. I was skeptical of the effect this may have on lighting and airflow, so I have removed the cover from the older tray and have not noticed much of a change.

Here are some mpre pics, just from today- thats days 11 and 13 of the grow. What do yall think so far?

Also I'm not gonna be able to care for the plants all of next week and they need to be watered everyday. Any Ideas on how I can keep them alive while gone?

Also should I consider transplanting them into the ground within the next week?

Enjoy.

+rep for good feedback

Subscribed, looking forward to how the purple widow does.
thanks man. The purple is actually lookin pretty healthy compared to some of the others.

see for yourself

thats days 15 and 17 for these youngsters. I know they should be a little further along, but the weather hasnt been great, so its understandable.

I have been watering every other day and have raised one humidity dome/ tupperware and removed the other, giving more airflow to the plants.

As you can see I have staked up one of the earlier mutts- mainly as a test- if it works this way I will stake the others when moved. I have also been gently pinching the stems to try to fatten them.

I plan to move them outdoors tomorow to a fenced in place hidden in the woods. Hopefully within two weeks they will be sexed and moved to their final homes hidden away in the brush and swamps.

I am working on preparing my sites, so watch out for some pics in the days to come.

good shit dude. when will you be transplanting them and have u decided what kidna soil your gonna use? gonna be 5 gal bucket grow or going into the ground? if your going into the ground be sure to dig a big hole and fill it with some nice soil. the soil mixture i use is ungodly awesome. After doing alot of reasearch i came up with it. it is as followed:

33% Spent Mushroom compost
33% miracle grow moisture control potting mix
20% peat moss
14% screened topsoil

Make sure you add some urea, blood meal, and cotton seed meal.

i iwll post some pics on a thread regarding this mixture if you want to see what i mean when i say ungodly awesome. for my 1st outdoor grow i find it that my girls are coming along reallly well.

Good shit man im telling you for an outdoor mix its GREAT!

The only way you are going to find spent mushroom compost is if u get it from a mushroom farms' composting facility. what mushroom companies do it make there compost, use it in the mushroom houses then when the crop is over they empty the house and some frams just give away the soil. there is a company by the name of monterey mushrooms out in cali, seeing as that is where your from i would try and find the closes one to you and see if you can buy some mushroom soil off of them it goes for about 12-15$ a yard so its cheap!

This misture would be nothing without the mushroom compost so if ur gonna do it make sure u get it!

Thanks for all the enthusiasm guys!

I moved the babies outside today before I learned there is supposed to be a frost tonight. I guess I am going to have to sneak back out and cover em with a sheet, as I think the frost/ freeze would surely kill them.
