not too close, we are talking about flood and drain here not aeroponics. I flood 4x's during lights on with the first feeding 30 min after the lights come on and the last one an hour before the lights go out, the other two feedings split the difference.

It depends on how much hydroton you use too. I use about 30 L of hydroton which isnt a whole lot. I get 1 gallon net pots and rinse them with water from my tub spout. I give it a few shakes until the water pouring down comes out clearfor about 10 seconds, then I consider them rinsed. Of course if your using 200L + then this might not be the best way to wash the stuff. I get no pH problems like this.

frozen water bottles or get yourself a decent chiller (adds a bit to the electricity bill but worth it).
