newbie starting a grow

let me start by saying hello to all and this is a great forum and learning tool. just wish more would read and ask less questions makes searching for things a bit difficult but oh well think i have it figured out quite well. would like to thank all the PRO's and you know who you are making a newbie able to learn at an accelerated rate.

Starting with my setup:
2x2x5 foot room

veg under 6 23w 5000k and 2 18w 2700k cfl's (will be adding more if need be)
flower under 12 18w 2700k and 4 23w 5000k cfl's (i know not enough would like to purchase a few more)
keeping all lights 1 to 2 inches from plants. will be surrounding plants as much as i can in space given. would like to get as close to 10,000 lumens/sqft just a tight space

fans will have 2 intake 120mm and 2 exhaust 120 mm computer fans running into a charcoal scrubber.
will also have atleast one fan blowing on plants

soil mix is ffof with 30% or so perlite(rough estimate)
will be feeding with fox farm trio (grow big tiger bloom big bloom) not til they need them guessing around a 3-5 weeks soil has lots of nutes.
will be feeding nutes 1/4 strength then going up to full in about 4 feedings. yes will alternate feedwaterfeedwater

as for seed started 6 bagseed in paper towel and one liberty haze on 1/28/13
very good success rate one bag seed was whitish and figured it wouldn't sprout. bagseed 5 of 6 and liberty haze 1 of 1:lol:
for christmas a buddy bought me a 5 pack of lh and got a pinneapple express and blue widow free. figured start of with the bagseed and use the good seed when i am seasoned.

as for my sprouts/seedlings sticking out of soil with shell still on just popped out this morning.(so impatient watching them every hour)

i know 5 plants in a 4 sqft space is a bit much but may have males so hoping for the best. can always expand if need be but didnt want to waste all my light on a giant grow room. will be topping per uncle bills method waiting for 5-7 nodes then cutting above second true node. for harvest hoping i make it there(not detection live in the sticks and own my own house just something unexpected or me being dumb hope its not the later) i will not be flushing but harvesting top colas and then fattening up bottom buds as long as plant are healthy.

sorry for being long winded but very excited and wanted to :spew: my brain to see if i am missing something. any info that i have wrong or need to add to please feel free that is why i am here.

can't wait to see the first green leaves
thanks again everbody wouldn't be possible without you.

with special thanks to uncle bill, born2killspam
will have pics soon

hiitsbob less is more til it comes to smoking it:eyesmoke:

I think you mean 'Uncle Ben'. LOL
Sounds like you're off to a good start, well thought out and not just thrown together after you already have plants started, but I wholeheartedly agree with your concern about being crowded.
I started out my current grow, a 2x2x4 area, wondering whether to do 2 or 3 plants, finally deciding on one only.
I vegged similar to your plans, with 46w of 2700k and 52w of 5000k, and it turned out good, but there's no way I would have been able to fit 2 plants in there to flower.
I am now flowering with 305w total, and have a handful.

haha my bad thanks for the reply bakatare666 i guess if my only screw up is ben or bill or whoever i think i will be ok. but would really like to thank uncle ben.
wondering how your yields are with cfl's?
i didnt think i would be able to get lights and 5 plants in there. was hoping 2 or 3. i started so many because of non femmed bagseed and didnt know if i would get males.
think thats to much light?
maybe try one as a mother plant in another box for clones since i am roughly 3 months out on being able to go outside with plants? (ugh means another week straight of reading)=)

and for regis i didnt realize you were into growing? will have pics up as soon as i locate my camera hopfully within the next day

This is my first CFL, so I don't know, but I don't think it'll be too bad.

LOL.
Good eye.
I tried my hand at FIMMING for the first time, but didn't get down low enough despite a little coaching.
It's bagseed, and the funny thing is, my last 4 plants have turned out ladies, but all were different ratios of Indica/ Sativa, only one heavily Sativa.
I started tying her down around 28 days when she was 10" tall and 12" wide.
I vegged for 30 days under 98w of CFL's-52w of 5000k and 46w of 2700k.
She is 85 days from sprout, 55 days from flip, and 27 days from first pistil as of today.
I tried a 13/11 light schedule like the early days of outdoor when the days are longer for 30 days when I did the flip, and that didn't work, so I switched to 11/13, and within 2 days had pistils popping everywhere.:-P
IDK if it was the 11/13 lights, but I think it was a coincidence of that plus the 30 days veg and another 30 after that.
Since I'm really only 27 days into flower (that's how I count, from first pistil), I'm hoping she'll get quite a bit more size and weight in the next 5 or so weeks.
If she's ready before that, I'll just be that much happier.
I just want her done in time so I can veg at least a month in the same area to get my plants going for outdoors for the summer. (planning to put them out by May 1 at the latest.)
Here's a couple more pics, day 21 when I transplanted, then I gave first feed of MG all purpose nutes at day 25, then next pic is at 28 days and in new container, and last is day 31 from sprout, the next day after flipping the lights.View attachment 2508508View attachment 2508509

i am not trying to give advice but should read uncle ben tutorial on topping? believe its in the facts says fim is unreliable. good read if you have not. gives a good explanation saying why topping works and gives all the horticulture biz about plants and why it works. topping above 1 st node gives 2 colas and above 2nd gives 4 colas. you may know this but like to spread facts.

No prob man.
That's what this site is about, learning, reading, sharing, etc.
I DID however have my first encounter with Uncle Ben this morning, and he steered me towards one of his threads when I mentioned/ asked about my low center leaves starting to yellow, that was in the defoliation thread.
He says he thinks it's N, and I value his opinion since I have heard many good things about him but no bad, but I have fed N a couple times and it hasn't helped, so I am still on my train of thought that it is from lack of light due to the CFL's I am using.
Even scolding me, trying to steer me away from the money hungry nute sellers, he was firm, and direct, to the point, but I like him.
He doesn't bullshit.
He is knowledgeable, and told me what he felt was my problem.
Same as, Hotrodharley steers people towards Moebius when they want to do Hempy, and I don't know Moebius, but I have seen much of Harley, and if I ever think to do Hempy, I know where I will go for advice.

remember that is a big plant and may need a decent amount of food. and i understand your opinion on light also.
from what i read from his thread/replys no he does not screw around and takes horticulture very serious and know the reason plants tick is why i respect him so much.
but then look at it from his eyes not many people search and he answers the same questions a million times.
growing marijuana is not a new science if you read here its all there just takes time.

good luck bob with your grow
i hope you will quickly progress to HID lighting or perhaps even LED
when i see these types of setups i am in two minds about them, i understand the lower watt cfls are more efficient and will perhaps save you a little bit of cash with your electricity bill over the larger cfls,
but i cant help thinking what a over complex mess it all is , not singling out your personal setup, but this style of growing with multi small cfls in general 10-20 lights 3 fans etc and those noisy computer cabinet fans too, i know some of these setups can produce reasonable plants and it is a cheap way to get started ..

multi cfl setups seem more complex than many HID or LED set ups more things that can go wrong more risk for no payoff they produce less yield and less quality

HID = 1 fan 1 light 1 passive inlet more yield better quality
you can run a HID in a 2x2x5 with 1 extractor fan

peace :)

skunkdoc i agree with everything your say gonna try to get threw 1 or 2 grows with these then unleash the cfl's on my house lights.
then switch to an led setup money is tight at the moment

quit smoking for the time being to be able to afford this setup. hoping from the yields i get i wont have to buy any green and save to buy the led light.

i am a disc golfer, avatar is pic of a sweet disc. Sadly sunday morning i had league then helped a buddy move.
all seedlings dried up but the one i have a pic up of and the other is about to kick its shell.
lesson learned low humidity, small pots, good drainage equals very fast dry out time.
seeds were started 8 days ago. seems to be doubling leaf size everyday.
humidity is staying around 35% during day and drops to 20% at night is this is my only concern so far?
on 24/0 light really make a difference any other way.(facts please)

1 is a few tomatoes plants sucking up light til my room gets crowded then they get window space.
2 is pokey named her for taking her slow time kicking the shell :wall:
3,4 are livea know a tall girl named olivia mixed it with live since its my first to show leaves.:weed:

You could mist, then cover with a 2 liter soda bottle with the top cut off when you are away and unable to supervise for a few hours.

yeah for sure i started my tomatoes with plastic wrap over them with a rubberband to hold in place worked like a charm.
sad i wasted a liberty haze but that is why i didnt start my good seeds til i have a little experience.
