New Law Requires Students To Learn How To Handle Being Pulled Over By Police

Students in Illinois driver's education classes will soon be required to learn something new before they can get behind the wheel. A new law requires instruction time on how to handle being stopped by the police.

Governor Bruce Rauner signed the bill into law on Friday. The change is aimed at preventing teens from panicking when being pulled over, and also from doing anything that may seem like a red flag to police.

For young drivers, getting behind the wheel for the first time is a thrill they've been looking forward to and many don't anticipate the frightening feeling of getting pulled over.

But to help the experience go smoothly, there is now a state law that requires driver's education teachers in both public and private school, and driver training schools, to instruct students on how to interact with police during a traffic stop.

I have seen some recent videos on what to do when you get pulled over. It kinda makes me anxious to have to try to do all those things they are asking when getting pulled over. It is nerve wracking getting pulled over! I would kinda feel silly really Putting my hands up on the dashboard or up in the air so that they don't shoot me.
At President Obama's town hall meeting he had a few weeks ago there was a young man in the audience that had the opportunity to ask Obama if he ever got pulled over and what his experience was. The reason the young man was selected to ask the question and invited to the town hall meeting was because he made a video about what you should do when pulled over by the police. I will never forget him because he was such a distinguished handsome young black man wearing a huge white cowboy hat. Well Obama answered him telling that he had been pulled over for speeding a couple times and was treated very respectfully. He did however go on to tell some stories about other racial discrimination he had endured as a young man growing up in Hawaii. I appreciated him being so open and revealing about those racist events he personally experienced.

I wonder if curriculum includes the video "Don't talk to the police". Then again, I'm sure it doesn't.

Here is a red flag for the police:

I'm old so I don't know all the new laws that apply, but when I got my DL in 72 you were not required to take driver ed to get you're license.

the cops new hang out in the freakin Starbucks. god dammit. every fuckin time i go there they are! and when they smile at me i just cringe. sooo creepy.

HAHAHA so I'm an immigrant, non-citizen.... and I remember in the 90's being anti the pledge... it didn't make sense to me, given my situation. But the teachers forced me to stand, and place my hand on my heart. It wasn't until late 90's that the whole issue was taken to court by someone else. I mean I love this country... I've been here longer than I was in my country of origin (Not the case back then of course), I even volunteered for the military after 9/11. But that whole thing was just nutty... I doubt many kids actually understood or gave meaning to the ritual... they were just words...

I'm anti pledge and anti knapkin on my lap now. lol I just went to my grandaughters graduation where the schools focus or hook for the day was , "be yourself and dont follow the crowd".
So during the " Plague of Allegance " me and my wife are the only ones i can see who didnt put thier hands up and recite the pledge in protest of the government.. lol.

Well, I don't know what the final tally will be, but there have been four convictions for on-duty shootings as of May. Before 2016, the average is less than two per year, for the last 11 years. Hmm, about 15-18 over the last 12 years, that's about what I would estimate the real number of bad shoots is, out of the thousands and thousands of "good shoots".

Never had a problem with cops. Donate $ every year to the FOP and another one, the name of which eludes me, that helps families of fallen officers. I get sweet decals for my vehicles that have gotten me out of multiple tickets.
