My first grow

I'm not growing weed, but if I were, and if I were to write a journal about it... this is how it would go.

I'm growing using rockwool cubes sitting in a nutrient bath. I guess this is hydroponics, but it seems way simpler than what most people do. I've been just adding solution every couple of days and changing it out completely about once a week. So far, I've been keeping my own personal journal, so I'll just copy and paste it here. I'm considering this grow to be experimental. If I manage to grow a usable product, that's just an added bonus. My seeds were found in a bag, and I've just kind of been going from there. You'll probably be able to tell from my journal that I started out knowing nothing and have already learned a lot. I'm really enjoying the experience. Comments, tips, questions, and criticisms are all more than welcome.

Anyway, here's where I am so far:

10/1 6 seeds in 1" rockwool cubes, soaked in water
10/5 2 seeds sprout, moved to rack. 1" rockwool cube in water with miracle grow, 40 watt fluorescent 22" above plant. 80 degrees.
One plant has 1/4" tall with tiny leaves, other is shorter, with no leaves
10/7 1 seed sprouts, moved to rack, 1.5gal distilled water with 1/2 tbsp floranut and 1/2 tbsp floragrow, 40 watt fluorescent 1" above plant.
'dash' of vinegar to adjust ph.
Mixed vinegar and baking soda to produce CO2 and left it twice.
One plant is 3" tall, has 4 leaves, second plant has curved back on itself, looks like it's dying, 3rd(new seed) is 1/2", no leaves yet.
10/8 Plant 1 is 3.5" but having trouble standing, leaves are a little bigger. Turned it and gave it a crutch. Seed 2 still the same.
Seed 3 is 3/4" and starting to get leaves.
10/9 Doubled the light to 4 20 watt flourescents.
Plant 1 is still 3.5", leaves are getting bigger, stem seems a little bit stronger. Second plant is up-right and stem is 1/2", but no leaves
Plant 3 is 1.5" and leaves are bigger
10/10 Plant 1 is growing a second set of leaves, no change in plant 2, plant three is 1.75" and getting bigger leaves.
Added 1/2 gallon water, floranute and floragrow.
10/15 Plant 2 died. Apparently it was upside down. Plants 1 and 3 have stopped vertical growth and are growing more leaves(they almost
look like pot plants). They're both standing on their own.
Moved them all to a smaller pan for simplicity, am also putting them on an 18/6 light rotation, and getting ready to move them to the
6" rockwool, with a 'veg' nutrient mix. (still no florabloom though) Added a fan.
10/16 They seem to love the fan, having almost doubled vegetation since yesterday. "transplanted" into 6" rockwool cubes, and upped the nutrient mix to floragrow's vegetation recommendation.
10/17 Plants have slight yellowing on the edges of the leaves and few splotches that I took for nute burn, so I diluted the mix a little. Also mixed some vinegar and baking soda for CO2. Started germing 5 new seeds, to see if these ones can play catchup. Germinating in paper towels this time to avoid the upside down problem.

In case you're wondering why I have no florabloom it's because when I did my shopping I didn't know what I needed, and the nearest hydro store is 4 hours away. I plan on getting some this weekend. I also plan on getting better ph and ppm meters, and am saving up for a 400w interchangeable HID.

10/18 Refilled reservoire, and re-upped the nutes to recommended veg.
10/20 Adjusted PH. Plants are both just starting their 4th set of leaves. They seem to be fine with the new nute levels. Two of the new seeds germinated. I moved them to rmoist ockwool cubes, but still keeping them in the dark.

Thats fine but you have to get them out of the water somehow.
10/5 2 seeds sprout, moved to rack. 1" rockwool cube in water with miracle grow, 40 watt fluorescent 22" above plant. 80 degrees.
Ok We have covered the water Need to get some nutes and move the light as close as possable

Get a oscillating fan for the plants you have to have a small brezz Can you drink your water? Use it no need for distilled. STOP using vinegar!!!
Mixed vinegar and baking soda to produce CO2 and left it twice.
No NEED at this point.

I've already settled some of the issues you brought up, but I've still got work to do. Some of these issues have been discussed in my other thread: https://www.rollitup.org/newbie-central/122035-can-i-make-work.html

Thats fine but you have to get them out of the water somehow.
Done

Ok We have covered the water Need to get some nutes and move the light as close as possable
Yeah, did that. I've had the lights within 1-2" after the first couple of days. I also added 2 26w cfls yesterday... but one burnt out already. Dunno wtf is up with that.

Get a oscillating fan for the plants you have to have a small brezz Can you drink your water? Use it no need for distilled. STOP using vinegar!!!
I've had the fan on during light hours. They love it. My water is drinkable. I have a bunch of distilled water left, so I'll use it up then switch to tap water. The PH of my soup generally starts out around 6ish, but climbs to 8 within a day or two. Is vinegar bad? I've read posts where other people use it. Should I get PH down? I'll have to make a shopping list for my next road trip.

No NEED at this point.
Yeah, I've realized that the CO2 is only really required when everything else is optimum... but now I have all this vinegar and baking soda lying around that you won't let me put in my soup. :P

Some of the issues are starting to show. Its ok we can work it out.
You're my hero. :)

Did you move them closer?
Sure did.

AHHH nutes Just not yet!! We have to work on how you are getting water to your plants.
Really? No nutes at all? I did get a little nute burn at first when I tried raising it, but I lowered it back down and raised it slowly and they don't seem to mind. Yeah... about that water....

Good DONT do 6 in yet Lets figure out your system first. Stop feeding!
Whoops. Where were you 3 days ago? :P

Alright, so here's an update of where I'm at right now. I still have the 2 plants in 6" rockwool cubes. They're under 80 watts of fluoros and 52 watts of cfls going 18/6. They have a fan. Temperature is sticking at 80 during lights on and 70 at lights off. I've pulled the rockwool out of the soup completely. Right when I did that, they drooped and started showing signs of over-watering, but the rockwool is starting to dry out and they're looking way better. For now, I'll prolly let them dry out for at least another day, and then just water(you're saying I should still use straight water?) manually to keep them damp. I also have 2 seedlings in 1" rockwool, just in case I can't manage to salvage the ones that are commited to the 6" rockwool. The plants all look really healthy, just a little on the small side, and they've already put on a little boost since yesterday. Prolly a combination of the extra light, and less damp. They do have this really papery leather of bark on the stems. Dunno what that means. I'll try posting some pictures, so here we go:

The whole shebang

A little closer

Plant 1 and Plant 2

You can kind of see the papery bark in the close-ups. That yellowness is just the light, they're really green.

Thats fine depending on what your intentions are and your budget you can get by with what you have for veg its slower but do able.

RUn the fan 24/7 YES GET BOTH PH DOWN AND UP And if budget allows get a PH and PPM Meter. You can get by with the drops but its a pain.

If your already doing it do it real slowly, with your lighting it will not take much.

I was right here Ok!
Here is the dealema, If you are going to go from seed to harvest you could keep them in the 6in and leave them in the tub to stay until your done with them feeding every 12 hrs. if you plan on having to move them you have to adjust your thought and get them in something that you can move. I did that and it was a nightmare.

YOu are looking great so far ! Ok what are your plans for the tub? Do you want to make an ebb & flow out of that? I would ask you if there is no need to go big right now lets get you working a small ebb & flow system and work our way up from there. If that's where you want to go you can get all the fittings at the hydro shop when you go. You will need some hose ,fittings, a small pump a air stone and pump and your set. a small set up like yours under 30 bucks. You will need to get another container for the reservoir 10 ,15 gal should do for your grow.

The leaves are just showing they were stressed, your good.

I think I'll try to keep these ones going as they are while I set up an ebb and flow system. I may even try to just flower them now, unless you think that'd be a bad idea.
I have a tub that is 12"x18"(6 plants) that I could use. I was hoping to find something that was 2'x2'(16 plants, which I won't have yet anyway) since I understand that's the coverage of a 250w mh, but for some reason, I can't find anything with those dimensions. Do they carry trays for this at the hydro store? ... it just occured to me I may be able to cut down a rubermaid tub. I don't have a workshop or anything, or I'd just make a box out of wood and line it with pool liner. I also have a rubbermaid tub(I think it's 20 gallons) I was planning on using as a reservoir.
I can actually get the hose and pump at the local hardware store, which I assume is cheaper than the hydro store. I assume I'll need epoxy or something to secure the hose to the tubs.

So what should my shopping list be for now? I've got: pump, some amount of feet of hose(1/4 inch?), whatever I need to connect these together, epoxy?, 2'x2' container of some-sort?, florabloom, 250w ballast/bulb/reflector(my wallet cowers), oh and some panda film(I hear white is the new black), perlite?

If you get the fittings you wont need the epoxy they have rubber washers. The hose i used 1/2 in in 3/4 out Since your wallet is already kicking your ass and you want to get bigger later go 600 and no use spending your money on a 250 And if you have the room and climate control get a 1000 you will be happier with the end product. Remember you only know how big this will get so think about the learning curve and your final expectations.

Yes panda film i use hyroton peralite is small and gets all over the place.

Good i dea with your list keep it going and we will have a real good list to go blow your paycheck on.

Ok, list updated. The reason though that I was planning on using a 250w is because the area I'll be using is long and narrow, and I'm going to have the pools layed out end to end eventually. I figured anything bigger than a 250w would be wasted. Also, the less atmosphere control I have to do the better(KISS, right?). I was definitely going to get a reflector with an exhaust port regardless, though. I'll look at prices... might go as big as a 600w, but I think a 1000w would be overkill for my area(I'd have to start making my plants call me Ra, god of the sun... I might do that anyway). Oh yeah... digital timer.

Then just go to the 600 then you will be happy you did. digital timer x 2 one for the pump and one for the light.

pump, 3/4 inch hose/fittings, 2'x2' container of some-sort, florabloom, 600w ballast/bulb/reflector(I realized the price is pretty much the same regardless of wattage), panda film, 2x? digital timer(the mechanical timers I have are rated for something like 2700w, and I can set them to within 15 minutes... Good enough for light?), hydroton, 6" pots

Yep timers will work i would if the budget allows just buy the 2x2 it does work better because it has ribs in it and holes already cut for the drains

Here is a diagram from ABF you can build from that piece by piece. Dont forget your pumps and air stone and the reservoir I know you have it just cross it off as got it.

So, the 'yay' is that I just remembered I have a change jar that probably has $300 in it... boy am I doing some crazy shopping this weekend, prolly get the whole setup going. The 'nay' is... my plants have had 0 growth in the last 24 hours, even less than when the rockwool was completely saturated. I haven't watered/fed them, but they're still pretty damp. I'd put up pictures, but they'd look identical to the last ones. Everything tells me I should have plenty of light, at least for veg. Any suggestions? If I can get the ebb and flow set up in the next couple of days, I'm tempted to rip the plants out of the 6" cubes, leaving them in the 1" cubes, and throwing them in there... this would probably do some intense damage to roots(unless the roots are growing as little as the leaves), but it might save the plants, and will give me a chance to test the system. Opinions?

Added ph and ppm meters to my list... dunno how they weren't on there.

Dont fret If you have moved them around they could have had a small shock to them. They looked fine so dont worry. If you have already started feeding them continue with very small amount in the water you will be fine.

When I first started i tended to over think it. When your there every day its hard to kill them because you can adjust quickly. Most people kill them with kindness or like some jackass that thought he needed nitrogen and pissed on his plants. WHATA MARROON !!

Cool about your find extra cash is always helpful. When you get to the shop spend some time actually putting together your set up. I know you have the list but you don't want to be in BFE and realize that you need something I made a billion trips to mine. Oh and don't let the guy at the hydro store try to sell you something know what you want and ask for that. ASK LOTS OF QUESTIONS ABOUT PRODUCTS THAT YOU ARE UNFAMILIAR WITH. When i first started going to mine he sold me shit that i didn't need and after spending about 2 g's with him and many trips he actually helped me with things You have done your research now you have to be confident and put it all together.

So, during my free time at work yesterday, I made 6 trips to 2 hardware stores(you were right... it's easy to forget stuff, or get the wrong stuff), horribly abused their return policy(bought tools and then returned them when I was done), committed a misdemeanor(the lady at the nursery said they didn't have plastic pots for sale, so I visited their greenhouse and found some free ones!), and constructed my ebb and flow system. The folks and Home Depot were incredibly useful in helping me construct my light-up automated blood-spewing cauldron for Halloween(at least, that's what they thought).

I left it running overnight to check for leaks, and make sure my timer was working, etc... everything seems to be great. It has a capacity of a whopping 6 plants, but will be really easy to upgrade when I find a better table. I managed all this without making the trip to the hydro store... so my list is cut down to: florabloom, ppm meter, ph meter, hydroton, and panda film... oh, and a friggin' light.

You were right, it must have just been stress, my plants took off again.

So, here's my current plan: I'm going to continue to veg my 2 plants that are in the 6" rockwool, watering manually. This weekend, I'm going to make the epic journey to the hydro store(so lemme know if you think I should get anything else while I'm there). When I get back, I'll take some clones off the plants I have(hopefully 3 from each), and get them started. Meanwhile, I'll get a real light, and set it up over the ebb and flow system. When they're ready, I'll put the clones in there. My current plants will be mothers(at least until I discover they're fathers), and their (hopefully)daughters will be the first generation grown in 'the system', which, I'm calling ROGUE(River Of Green Under Experimentation).

How big do my mothers need to be to get 3 clones from them?
Can anyone think of a quicker/more efficient way of doing this?

Oh, I'll post pictures of the Rogue later, but right now I'm too tired.

Ahhhh I don't know what your talking about ;-) I have never done anything remotely like that.

Do you have an idea of he kinds of equipment you want? Call the hydro store and ask what they carry before you go.

You were right, it must have just been stress, my plants took off again.
Good thing your a smart guy and asked questions. There have been others that freaked out thought they were in need of more nutes so they pissed on the plants. NO KIDDING!!

So, here's my current plan: I'm going to continue to veg my 2 plants that are in the 6" rockwool, watering manually.
Lets see if we can get you into a automatic watering system for these. You dont want to be tied down and they will grow better.

When I get back, I'll take some clones off the plants I have(hopefully 3 from each), and get them started. Meanwhile, I'll get a real light, and set it up over the ebb and flow system. This was a gaggle for me also. I took my first set of clones at 35 days

That is about as close as i would go. Here is the kicker it took me 2 try's in RW and then my 3rd i made an areo cloner and i got roots. This will be up to you how you clone i just had a bitch getting roots in RW. It set me back 6 weeks from that.

Alright, so I found everything I need on ebay for way cheaper than the hydro store(at least according to their website). I even ordered a light. It's an interchangeable 400w. I know, everyone keeps telling me bigger for the future, but for now, I'd rather not deal with the extra heat, and even when I upgrade the rest, I'm still prolly going to want something relatively small for the mothers and clones, so the 400w won't go to waste even when I've got my 12 1000watters going in my 10' X 10' bedroom. I've got the plants that are in rockwool in the ROGUE, with them being watered twice a day. They're still on 18/6. When I get everything else I need, I'm going to switch them over to 12/12, and take clones of them. Here are the pics, as you can see, I did a little improvising:

No, that's not a milk bottle cap... well, maybe it is, but it keeps my water table from being a water fountain.

They're getting bushy

Your just fine!! Your right about the light you can always use it for your mothers. I have one myself. Keep us informed my friend. You couldnt find a PVC fitting to work you had to use brass? LOL

Here they are... How do they look for 3 weeks old? Should they be bigger? I'm pretty happy with them regardless. I'm thinking the tall one may be male, and the short bushy one female, though of course, I hope they're both female. The one might just be tall and gangly because it germinated before I realized I needed to have the light closer than 2 feet away.

Your looking great !! You will be fine it just will take longer because of the hand watering and light situation.
