hey all currently growing 2 pineapple chunk and 1 swiss cheese, i am 6 weeks and 2 days into flower and thought i should check how the trichomes where doing and this is what i got. IMG_2076.JPG IMG_2077.JPG IMG_2078.JPG its alot of amber and most of the hairs are still white. according to barneys farm the pineapple chunk takes minimum 55days to finish so i'm still 10 days short of that, but going by the trich's i would say it was ready for harvest. my last run was the same strain and it went 8wks. what do u guys think? i just cant get my head around harvesting a plant at 6weeks never had that happen before its usually 8wks then harvest.

Im no pro dude but thats quite a bit of amber. I think theyre ready for sure. I never go by breeders recommendations. Theyre usually early. But in your case it looks like theyre late. Trichs are your best way to judge maturity. My advice is to cut off a piece, quick dry it and test it. See how you like it.

Well I could be wrong but the 1st pic and kinda the second imo look like a sugar leaf and not the actual bud...if this is bud, at this point you have to start going by the hairs (yes I said it) and what I mean is , is the bud swelling up, are the brown hairs (forget the % of colored hairs)receding back into the calyx?...I'm no expert but I know there was a recent thread where some of the experts were talking on color of trichomes and that you can get amber early on too...I'll try to find

I cut a bit off and tried it but to be honest m8 the high just isn't there yet :( , and just a bit wary harvesting at 46 days lol. so i'm in a bit of limbo and don't know what to do cause if they are ready and i leave them any longer i've got the risk of the thc starting to degrade if its not already started lol

thanx m8 and spot on yes its the sugar leaf cause it was very tricky trying to get a bud shot(iphone+100xmagnifier). i'll go just now and try and get a better pick of the plants and one of the actual buds

Just take a picture of a top bud, no micro...just get about 6 inches away and get it focused, I'll give you more of my opinion....but if you say it's not ready, in my learnings I have found if you can start seeing the receding and all that, you can just tell when the plantisdone, I don't even check trichomes anymore...if anything I'd take it to the 8 weeks, and if it's passed due o well, that's how we learn right?

Bro 100x is wayyyyyy overkill....at that magnification it's wayy to shaky...I can't believe you got the pictures you did lol

Hmm. I hate to say this but I don't go exactly by tric coloring.
It's a whole package thing.......
Has it done it's stated time? Are the calyx's swollen and the pistils receading? Has the bud it's self "blown up" over 2 weeks?
Now I look at the tric's. Look cloudy (some strains [mostly longer runners] don't amber!)
See some amber?

Harvest or not is really a learned ART in my book. It varies for strains too! The above is a good guideline.

I'd say they were just about right (though I am no expert), Ed Rosenthal advocated 75% abmber head triclones and this is a good rule of thumb for a mix of head and body stone with good levels of thc and cbd, cbn etc

Perhaps you could leave it for another week at most then I think you will be approaching the degradation threshold which can actually ensue during the drying/curing phase.
I dont think fast drying a bud will give you an indication of the finished article as curing is as important as the drying process.

If I was you now, I would harvest a 3rd now, a third next week and the the final third on the 8 weeks mark..this will be valuable experience you cannot buy and strain familiarity that will allow you to make better yealds in the future, as you will then know for sure what is the best time to harvest.

Hope this help mate :)

anything helps m8 cheers :). going to let them go another week checking the buds every 2days and take it from there.
welcome :)
I would take a couple of buds now and dry them properly then cure, this way you can experience first hand the differences in the finished produce and different times of ratio's of amber head triclones.

happy days anyway mate ;)

But the thing is....he's looking at sugar leaves! The plants have not reached their normal or even their given time of flower...
To harvest now is simply put - A newbie mistake of the first order! Any harvest!

The calyx's have not swollen and the buds have not "bulked" yet! a clear indication of not ready.....
The ambering of sugar leaves is a "false finish" and I have seen that in many grows.....trust me OP. Wait the 2 weeks! The difference in quality will be staggering (literally) ..

I would take some now, then some a week later then the final chop.
Its the only way to gain experience imo.
He can evaluate first hand then the difference.

Also, the buds grow at different rates, some calyxs can be swollen whilst others are not, it depends on which buds he viewed..but I think you are right though.
Ive been growing on and of for 25 years, not commercially though, just small systems and Im certainly no expert.

I just think people need to learn for themselves too
Havent we all wished we had done something different in hind sight?
These mistakes make us better growers if we learn from them. Getting advice from seasoned growers is nice to have access to, but learning is the only way to significantly improve quality and yield, and that comes from hands on experience.

I can only assume that you are a competent grower and have the knowledge and experience :)

I suppose it all depends on the grower, if he is doing it for the cash and he is desperate, then yes, he needs the best possible weight and product now.
If he is growing it for personal smoke, and it is his hobby, then I would think he would be best part harvesting and taking notes of what they look like before they are chopped and wet weight. Then after the dry and cure is finished test the dry weight with the taste and effects of the high.
This will give him knowledge to build on next grow.
