Oh, I see. I would assume then that a true connoisseur would snub his/her nose at this plant which is receiving sub-par lighting, no? The buds certainly will not be grown to perfection at this rate.
A pure sativa could be grown in the most perfect lighting conditions and other than possibly being larger, not end up being much if any different that what is seen in the picture.

You have totally underestimated the suns power and intensity and the amount of naturally reflected light from the sun that is striking the plant.

Who are these so called connoisseurs?

People who were lucky enough to experience pure strains of marijuana before it was polluted by indica strains, and of course those few who have been lucky enough to have been introduced to the same since the pollution began.

Do they smoke Indicas and enjoy them?

If they are true sativa lovers they might smoke a cross with some indica in it or even a pure indica now and then and they might possibly somewhat enjoy it, but they will never enjoy it as much as they do a pure sativa.

Are there hybrid connoisseurs who can accurately tell a plant's heritage simply by its fan leaves?

No. Many believe they can, but they have an equal chance of being incorrect as being correct. Some crosses that are predominantly sativa but will have a more indica look, they will have wider leaves, but the high will be mainly sativa and there are some crosses that are predominantly indica but will have more of a sativa look, they will have narrower leaves, but the stone will be mainly indica.

It can occur due to the cross that is made and what traits are passed on from each plant used in the cross. It can also occur over time when a plant is acclimatized to being grown in a climate that is very different than what it originated in (when talking about a pure strain).

It can also occur in a pure strain over time through selective breeding. Even in pure strains there will be the occasional different phenotype. If you pick a different phenotype, one that seems to suit your wishes or needs of purpose more and breed them together over time you can alter the physical appearance of a pure strain.

The original Romulan was a tall lanky thin leaved long flowering Korean strain that was brought back to Canada by Canadian soldiers returning from the Korean War. The plant had to be acclimatized to the new area it was being grown in and those breeding it picked the shorter wider leaved bushier faster flowering phenotypes and bred them with each other. Over time the strain transformed from a tall lanky thin leaved long flowering plant to a short wide leaved bushy fast flowering plant, but the high remained the same.

It was only altered greatly when the 'Dutch Masters's got female clones, because by then it was in a clone only form, and they bred it with heavy indicas, giving it an even more indica look but also altering the high.

^^Thank you for the wealth of info. Do you know of any seeds that offer pure sativa genetics? I have grown Kali Mist (Serious) and enjoyed it very much, but the leaves were very fat and wide. What is the closest variety with true sativa structure and genetic history that is offered in seed form?

Here are a few. I prefer Willie Nelson and Phnom Penh myself but none of them that I have tried have left me disappointed.

Reefermans Seeds - Phnom Penh
Strain: Phnom Penh
Breeder: Reeferman
Location: indoor, outdoor
Type: sativa
Flowering: ~98 days
No feminized seeds.
Aka: Cambodian
The PP is anything but average! Crossing to a Thai x Haze father tames the wild sativa just a little bit, with out losing the psychedelic stone and spicy incense , black tea flavors of the Cambodian jungle weed. Not for beginners

Inside Finish Time: 14 weeks / Outside Finish Time: early December / Variation: 3.5 / Odor Level: 2 / Mold Resistance: 6 / Yield: 4 / Ease of Growth: 3 / Feed Level: 2.5 / Stretch: 3.5x

Strain Lineage / Genealogy / Family Tree
A cross that is still all sativa:

Reefermans Seeds - Accidental Haze
Strain: Accidental Haze
Breeder: Reeferman
Location: indoor, outdoor
Type: sativa
Flowering: ~80 days
No feminized seeds.
Accidental is more a hazey high than a asian high asian highes get me in the eyes and I feel rocketed hazes are more mid range.
The accidental haze was a accidental hybrid between mexican red hair and punta rojo coombian that has now been inbred it turned out to have a super strong haze smell solid nuggests and overall higher yeild than most hazes.

Another cross that is all sativa:

Reefermans Seeds - Willie Nelson
Strain: Willie Nelson
Breeder: Reeferman
Location: indoor, outdoor
Type: sativa
Flowering: ~84 days
No feminized seeds.
2005 High Times Cannabis Cup Winner - Best Sativa

An F1 hybrid between Vietnamese Black and Highland Nepalese . Its Willie favorite smoke , he tried it once and bought the whole crop. What else do you need to know? How about a sweet and sour, lemongrassy flavor and a reasonable 10-12 week flowering time? Good mold resistance and a friendly, soaring high round out the package.

Inside Finish Time: 10-14 weeks / Outside Finish Time: Late November / Variation: 3 / Odor Level: 3.5 / Mold Resistance: 4.5 / Yield: 4 / Ease of Growth: 4 / Feed Level: 4.5 / Stretch: 2.5-3x

Strain Lineage / Genealogy / Family Tree

Another all sativa:

Reefermans Seeds - Blackseed
Strain: Blackseed
Breeder: Reeferman
Location: indoor, outdoor
Type: sativa
Flowering: ~68 days
No feminized seeds.
Blackseed is a mostly Mexican IBL that dates back to about 1974, and fueled early BC pot culture. It stands as proof that strong cannabis is not a recent invention. It used to called `the pound plant` as it makes big sativas with big yields. Great plant for the Kootenays, where it was first bred by hillbillies. It need lots of root space and makes frosty light green lemony nice sized buds. Old school sativa high.

And another all sativa:

Reefermans Seeds - Nepalese
Strain: Nepalese
Breeder: Reeferman
Location: indoor, outdoor
Type: sativa
Flowering: ~77 days
No feminized seeds.
Aka: Nepalese Highland / Highland Nepalese

Nepalese Highland is a pure IBL (inbred line) from Nepal. Although this strain grow with a sativa structure the buds show more indica in their formation. Reeferman has sold these seeds at various times over the past decade on various seed auctions and other seed sites and this strains is known to have been used be several breeders to produce the majority of Nepali based strains that are available today.

The strain is popular with breeders looking to create sativa structure in indica hybrids, where earlier finishing times are required. It also produces a larger frame to the plants which helps increase the yields.

This Nepalese Highland was used as the father of Reeferman’s High Times Cannabis Cup winner Willie Nelson, along with a number of other popular Reeferman strains.

Another cross that appears to be all sativa:

Reefermans Seeds - Cambodian x Haze
Strain: Cambodian x Haze
Breeder: Reeferman
Location: indoor, outdoor
Type: sativa
Flowering: ~80 days
No feminized seeds.
A hybrid of Cambodian IBL x Purple Haze subsequently backcrossed to their Cambodian male. It is a beautiful South East Asian hybrid strain producing good yields with a decent bud density and a vibrant high with little to no paranoia. The Purple Haze was originally from the owner of Positronics in Amsterdam and was crossed with a Cambodian strain that has been well worked for over a decade and is well suited to indoor cultivation.

Seedsman - African Buzz
Strain: African Buzz
Breeder: Seedsman
Location: indoor, outdoor
Type: sativa
Flowering: ~77 days
No feminized seeds.
Genetics: Malawi
Variety: Pure Sativa
Type: Pure-bred, Traditional Landrace
Harvest Date: November
Flowering Period: 11 weeks
THC Content: 10-20%
Characteristics: Good yielding sativa, with long branches.

African genetics are some of the most popular and enjoyed around the world, due to their exotic taste and mesmerising effects.

African Buzz is a variation of the Malawi Gold Seedsman used to offer in previous years.

It is a wonderful 100% sativa strain originating in Malawi. Our African Buzz was a particular phenotype that we really enjoyed giving us an immense cerebral buzz. We crossed this with a fast growing Malawi Gold father and African Buzz was created.

Although it is a pure sativa it has a quick vegetative stage in optimum conditions and we would recommend only 2-3 weeks growth before switching to flowering to minimise its height.

African Buzz takes 11 weeks to flower during which its typical structure of long branches begins to show. It is a good yielder and is recommended as best indoors and in greenhouses, unless you are somewhere with no chance of frost until December e.g. Southern Italy and Spain.

Any sativa aficionados will appreciate the buzzy and exciting effect our African strain produces.

ACE Seeds - Oldtimer's Haze
Strain: Oldtimer's Haze
Breeder: ACE Seeds
Location: indoor, outdoor
Type: sativa
Flowering: ~140 days
No feminized seeds.
Hybrid of different tropical sativas: Mexican, Purple Highland Colombian, Southern Indian (Kerala) and Thai.

The Haze was developed in California in the 1960s and 70s by crossing some of the best tropical sativas which had been imported during that period. Its exact genotype remains unknown, but it is probably a hybrid of different sativas from Mexico, Southern India, Colombia and Thailand, the latter two being the most dominant in the final hybrid.

This mythical sativa, which has been the starting point for the development of the best hybrids of the past decades, was about to disappear during the 1980s due to the introduction of skunks and indicas in the breeding scene.

Ace seed’s Haze population comes from the last reproductions made with this variety in California, and it has been preserved intact until today by Oldtimer, a British breeder, and then reproduced by our breeders using a wide diversity of parental plants.

Oldtimer’s Haze still preserves the genetic diversity that many present Haze lines have already lost, and it is possible to find phenotypes ranging from the mythic and nearly extinct “Purple Haze” to the most popular “Green Haze” phenotype, and of course intermediate combinations as well.

By flowering the Hazes at low temperatures, the garden fills with beautiful autumn colours that vary from light green to red, blue and purple.

The flowers gather forming willowy bunches that achieve good volume, when grown under optimum conditions.

Oldtimer’s Haze has an incalculable value for every preservationist, collector and breeder that is looking for a Haze’spopulation that still conserves all quality and genetic diversity of the original hybrid.

Oldtimer’s Haze is a delight for 70s sativa lovers, trip back into the past for all those who could not enjoy it at that time.
Slim and elegant plants, with a tall, branched structure. Medium-length internodes. At the time of growing, the leaf is very thin and shows a pale colour. It reacts very well to pruning.

Dark, fruity aroma, with earthy touches of ashes, incense and antique wood aroma. Green Haze’s aroma is fruitier (like tropical ripe fruit), whilePurple Hazes smell like blackberry and black liquor.

Strong stimulating and mental effect, without heaviness or physical weakening. A high level of THC and low level of CBD together produce an o-limit effect, which allows you to get higher and higher with each intake.

Ace only recommends it to extreme sativa lovers and breeding projects.
Outdoors: Only in tropical or subtropical climates. Within latitudes between 20deg and 35deg, we would recommend a warm, coastal climate and the use of a greenhouse.

Flowering indoors: 16 – 24 weeks
Flowering outdoors: End of December/ January
Yield/m2: Low
Resistance against spider mite: Medium
Resistance against Powdery Mildew: Medium
Resistance against botrytis: Very High
Resistance against cold: Medium

I am in SE Asia as well, but I get plenty of sun. I just don't grow the rainy season part of year as its too much on the rooftop balcony for them. They end up drowning. As for getting it here, where I am it sucks so I grow my own. I like a good smoke not ditch weed :)

Think i know your prob. u say its on the balcony ,well when its night time your either switching on balcony light (stopping flowering) or your apartment lights are shining on balcony. Keep that plant in strict darkness for 12 hours per day if u want heads.

Your growing a Sativa, which gas a long grow season(long skinny leafs), very potent strain though. Looks like the Columbia Gold I grew. 12/12 on TOTAL DARKNESS is mandatory and then reduce light the final 2 weeks prior to harvest to only 10hr. This will draw up resins and firm the bud. My 45yrs experience is testimate to this fact!:blsmoke: Usually will take 45 days after 12/12 cycle, then 10/14 final 2wks. Also, use a tbs of molasses per gal of mixture that has a high phosphate (9-59-8) for a fertilizer. Minimum nitrogen.

what sativa are you growing that ripens with the third phase of floral maturity at 45 days... gonna take a true sativa atleast 60 some odd days but a definitive lights off is needed any bit of light hitting the receptors will be detected

Evidently you are totally unfamiliar with a pure sativa.

It is not skinny leaves that equate to connoisseur quality. It is the high you get from a pure sativa that equates to connoisseur quality.
thanks for clearing that one up man , i think he is totaly not familiar with sativa ! ime from south africa , and here we only get pure landrace sativas to grow , weed has got so advanced , one of these days there wont be any more pure landrace left if we dont presurve it , sure u can harvest weed in 3 months and it will be good weed , but a peer sativa can take up to 11 months to finnish ! and grow way over 3m tall , with sativa its the high that counts , uplifting high sometimes energetic ! indica plants with fatter leaves mature way faster and with denser buds , and gives u a body stone , so breeders loved the high of sativa but it just took to long to mature so they started crossing differant sativas with indica plants , in that way u got a mix of both , ,ost weed nowaday's are crossed weed , like ww nl and all those , but somewhere in their genes there lys a sativa , sativas takes a while but its well worth the while waiting for em !

Ya, hate to say it man, but u fucked something up. In 34 weeks I could grow ten foot tall trees yeilding pounds, throw them out find a new strain, and a spot that actually offers what plants need, sunlight!

did anybody ask this dude what kind of soil he was using or what he was feeding his plant? im curious as to what size pot hes using too. obviously its a pure sativa, and after 8 months i would think that this plant would be way taller than it is.

but look at those leaves they are skinny as hell, when that plant gets done it wont be a large yield but Ill bet that will be some of the finest cannabis around. pull the plant inside and LST it and get it into a 12/12 schedule to finish it.
u got that right ! i would like to see the final produckt

good question , i personally think its a shortage of sunlight that delayed the process a bit , but i know that sativas do take more or less that time , depending on how much sun it gets
