Modular Grow-Tub Experiment

Hey everybody! This is my first try at an indoor grow. I have done one successful outdoor grow of a few plants but this is an entirely different challenge!

I have two 30 gallon Rubbermaid containers I am transforming into a modular type grow-box. This is a pretty tight budgeted project, most everything was either scavenged or bought on the cheap. The plan is as follows:

- One bottom piece with fans.
- One top piece with carbon filter.
- One midsection "extension".
- A light hanging setup which can attach to either the bottom piece or midsection.

There will be two containers stacked on top of each other so that when the plants are small, I won't need the top half and can use just one container and as the plants grow I can add the second container to make the box tall enough. The bottom container has two fans on the sides for airflow, and the top has a fan with a carbon filter I made. I am using computer fans and an old computer power supply to power the three fans. All the pieces will be painted gloss white inside and matte black outside.

I have three 24" 2-light CFL fixtures with six 20 watt bulbs (3x 6500k and 3x 3000K). The lights are attached to two hanging fixtures I made which you can see in the pictures. It is very easy to lift the lights out and I will be able to attach to either of the containers. I think the light hanging rig is quite ingenious if you ask me. :bigjoint:

I have the bottom and top pieces done, but not the midsection yet, pictures are attached.

The first sprout has popped and I currently have it in a shoe box with a little CFL in it keeping it going until it gets big enough to put in the box. I am growing bagseed, but I hope to get some good seeds after the first trial grow is done if everything goes well.

All comments and criticisms are welcome! (especially on lighting and indoor grow methods)

Thanks for looking! :)

That picture was taken right after I watered it. It's doing fine now, I moved it into a bigger pot inside the Rubbermaid. None of the other seeds sprouted. :( That's what you get with bag-seed I guess. I have a few more germinating now though.

I remember 2 years ago, i friend of mine gave me 100's of outdoor seeds, i just threw them in a pot with mud, a month later the whole pot was full of little plants ^^

hehehe takes about 3 weeks for them to sprout sometime.... peace

I also used the paper towel method. They all seemed to germinate pretty quickly. I did 8 to start out with and they were all germinated within 48 hours but only one has sprouted and it's been about 2 weeks now. I still have the other ones in the little planter thingys so we'll see if they ever sprout. I am germinating 5 more seeds right now.

I don't have any more seeds at the moment because I am not smoking currently. I am on a summer job search so I am not buying any weed right now which is my main source for seeds (cheap weed). I might be able to get some from a friend if he happens to have any but I don't know.

I now have 4 seeds planted. The last three were planted yesterday, and the first one is in the attached picture. I am hoping I get lucky with ladies! :bigjoint:

I think I am going to make the top half of the box and touch up the paint on some spots on the bottom part tomorrow. I will post more pictures once I get it done.

grodro: I wanted a portable setup for this one, which is why I went with the parts and methods I did. I have been seriously considering a DWC setup with a 400W light for a closet if this grow goes well. I would definitely buy some seeds for that one instead of using bagseed.

I got another sprout today! :bigjoint: The "big" plant is still looking great as well. I will add pics later this afternoon once I get my digital camera back from my girlfriend again.

Holla at ya boy! I'm back!

I decided to take the operation outdoors since my plant was getting too tall for the container. It's a pretty serious looking Sativa now, which I am pretty stoked about because I am pretty sure it's a girl! :bigjoint:

There is finally another sprout from some seeds I had germinating, so here we go with round 2 for the grow-tub. I will probably veg it for about a week or two and then just start to flower it.

It's hard to get a good picture of the little hairs, but they are definitely there on all of the upper nodes.

When should I expect to see some real flowering start? Also, how much bigger should I expect this plant to get during the course of flowering? I have never dealt with a Sativa before.

It's around somewhere. . . ;)

I had to cut some branches on a couple trees to get it some really good sunshine, but it does get quite a bit of sun throughout the whole day now. It is also surrounded by pretty thick pine tree branches. Hopefully the deer keep away.

I turned the tub plant on to 12/12 today. *crosses fingers* It's going to be a little guy, but I want to smoke home grown bud again NOW!!!!!!!!!

I also have some more seeds now since my buddy bought some TERRIBLE weed with a shit-ton of seeds in it and I ganked the bad of seeds n' stems. LOL

I also got some decent cheap organic ferts for the big MAMA outside. It was looking a bit hungry for nitrogen and potassium to say the least.

FYI: It's almost 5 feet tall now! SHIIIIIIT! :D

Pics coming soon! Hopefully tomorrow. :bigjoint:

The outdoor plant is still growing at a good pace. It's now about 5'5" tall! The tub plant is also growing a bit. I haven't noticed any sex showing yet, but it's only been under 12/12/ for a few days. It's under darkness now so I can't get a picture, maybe later. Pics of the outdoor plant though! :bigjoint:
