Maybe a dumb newbie question, but here goes....strains from seeds

Heygurll,

One thing I think I will do on my first grow is nip the tops out in the seedling stage, so the plant will spread out....1 potential stalk/bud becomes 2, nip the new ones after a while for 4, etc. Lower plant height with many smaller buds.

And...if by luck I liked the strain and how it grew, smoked, etc.......I could just take clones from the establish females and use them for the next grow cycle.

I think I can, anyway.

I've shocked my babies with finger fertz., had them shut down for up to a week, snipping them could be iffy at such a young age. Do 1 tho and post up.

Hey homie. First off, welcome to RIU and best of luck on your possible growing venture. Just wanted to drop my two cents and hope something may help you out. I'm no expert, I am only on my second grow. However, I pulled off a beautiful first harvest. It took a lot of research and the folks around this forum helped out a lot. As far as the high you enjoy, I wouldn't really rule anything out. You're doing the right thing by educating you self and looking these things up rather than just ordering every strain mentioned on this thread. I'm a musician myself and I have had the exact same relationship with cannabis in the past. What I found that works best for me is actually a hybrid, even though someone posted that you should stay away from them. It is an indica dominant hybrid, so it gives me the mellow effect. It does has a hit of Sativa, which I love because it gets my gears turning and makes me more creative and spontaneous when trying to groove out new material. Your plan for cloning near the end of veg and keeping under cfls until the first set is finished is great. It'll be simple and a nice place to start without overwhelming your situation with heat and extreme lighting. Just do your homework on cloning and always take a few extra until you get good at it. A lot of the mistakes i see newer growers making (including myself) is over complicating things. At the end of the day, it's just science and nature. The information is out there. You seem pretty level headed, but my advice would be just keep it simple until you feel comfortable with more. A 3x3 tent can be set up quite a few different ways. Just really depends on what you're looking for. It would be a nice space for 2 plants in a scrog or 9+ plants using the sea of green method. The question is, are you cool with vegging for an extra couple weeks or do you want to harvest as quickly and often as possible? Have you given any thought to whether you wanna grow in soil or hydro?

An earlier poster (Mr Moustache) got me thinking along the lines of growing a mostly indica strain, to avoid adverse side effects of the smoke. THC Bomb looks like a hybrid.

I like the idea of White OG (85% indica), but I am having trouble locating it feminized.

A few minutes later:

This might actually fit the bill-
Feminized Master Kush
http://sensiseeds.com/en/feminized-seeds/whitelabel/master-kush

Or Fem Northern Lights
http://sensiseeds.com/en/feminized-seeds/whitelabel/northern-lights-feminised
The THC bomb started flowering at 14 hours outdoors for me and a decent strong but mellow high. Even most sativa will have a mellow high if left to ripen.

what do you mean seedling stage ? :) there is no seedling stage! and if you can top a plant it is definitely no longer a seedling.

Thanks for the welcome, drum, it is good to be here. 'magine trying to get all this info in the pre-Internet era?

Hmmm..my reason for thinking along the lines of an indica are to get away from the edgy sativa high that turned me off on weed many years ago (if indeed that was the cause). Maybe a good hybrid....75% indica/25% sativa....what strain do you use? Is it feminized? One picker/musician to another, I am inclined to trust your preference. I don't want a de-motivating, sleepy-superstoned buzz, nor one that causes the anxiety/social awkward feelings. Guess like so many things in life, it is a balance to strike.

I plan to keep the first few grows as simple as possible....hence fem seeds, etc, 'til I get a little technique going. I expect my first grow to be marginal at best, but WTH. Live and learn.

As to the tent, I am thinking a sea of green would be an admirable goal. Assuming I get the hang of it (and I will, WTH, it ain't rocket science, the PLANT does the growing after all, not me), I may try that whole scrogging thing. Watched a 'tute on youtube, and it seems doable.

I am not really going for production, so vegging a few weeks is cool. I am pretty laid back by nature, and actually only smoke a hit or 2 around 2-3x a week. Hell, one good grow would probably set me up for 2 years, although I'd probably wind up giving most of it away to my friends. And I have seen growers on here talking about 1lb yields from a small tent grow....I'd wind up having to will all that weed to my kids.

Soil vs hydro? I am sticking with soil right now....(again, keeping it simple)....but hydro definitely has possibilities. I THINK you get it done faster with hydro, too....right? But I'll save that for later.

(Man this is a great site....)

LOL....Yer just fucking with me now, Critical....:bigjoint:

Your right, I mispoke. I guess you would start pinching colas/topping well into the veg stage....right?

btw, though....I DID see this one thing about scrogging that said to start pinching colas to seperate/top the plant at a very young age (like when the plant is only about 2 inches tall), then low-stressing with wire, pinching again after a week, more wire, pinch-wire-pinch-wire etc. until you have a ton of horizontal growth you then train through a screen. Nothing I'm going to attempt on the first go 'round though. Simplicity is my watchword.

Take care.

no its not your fault bro, lots of people think there is a 'seedling stage' lol.(a seedling by definition is a young plant- veg starts day 1) I try not to induce stress for at least 3-4 weeks. Have fun :)

by the way, a cola is the bud, I think you are talking about the tops. Not being er critical but I thought you should know.
Correct. The thing I saw would have me pulling the tops so the plant goes from an "l" to a "Y"....and then 2 more "Y" to the 2 ends...etc. I think the one guy who was starting at 2 nches tall might have been a tad excessive though. Best to let the plant get somewhat stronger, right?

One thing about scrogging though, I am thinking that the screen would help support the heavy buds on the plant. I guess, anyhow...

yeah well I let it grow past 5 internodes and then top after the 4th when there is already that secondary growth coming it seems to quicken the recovery from the stunt that happens post topping. Yeah the screen would definitely help support the buds, it is a good technique alas one I haven't tried yet.

If you smoke more often you will build a tolerance to it and it won't make you so edgy. When you harvest will also determine potency. If the trichomes are amber then the thc is degrading to cbn and that will make you tired. upload_2015-1-10_13-15-45.jpeg

I'm just thinking that variety is the spice of life etc, and that a Partagas Black Label 6x52 cigar is great.....just not ALL the time. Maybe you would want to have a few different strains around to suit your mood?

Also....am I to understand that you can grow 2 or more different strains in the same grow tent at the same time? I might want to see if there are any seed vendors that would sell a variety pack...know of any?

Attitude Seedbank has all types of mixed seeds. I'd suggest Nirvana's seed store and their Aurora Indica. Simple and easy and relatively consistent. Definitely mids but easy to grow and learn from.

This year is a strain survey for me. Every plant on my table is a different strain. I did precisely what you are planning. I take clones and then flower and wait to see if the plant is a keeper prior to determining the clones destiny.

It is possible but I would stay away from that as a first time grower. I'm constantly having to put one or the other on plain water etc..... so do not start with multiple strains. Do not start with designer genetics (Cali Connection has fire but unless you really know what you're doing you will end up with a seeded run sometimes).

Go get a few of one of Nirvana's knock off strains, it's cheap and learn from that grow. One grow under your belt and you will know where you are going. Nirvana usually have both fems and regulars of each strain offered. Frankly if it were me I'd go fem just like you are saying but sexing is very easy if you have a digital camera you have all of us.

Welcome to growing now get some seeds wet :)
