Lighting during Vegging

I have a question for the more experienced grower-

Some people veg under 24 hours of light, and some use an 18/6 cycle.

Flowering is triggered when the plant is given 12 hours of darkness per day.

If someone is using an 18 on and 6 off cycle during veg, is it important that the plant be in total darkness during that six hours? I understand that maintaining darkness during flowering is important, so as not to confuse the plant. But logic would SEEM to dictate that since a plant can take 24 hours of light during veg, it would not be imperative during an 18/6 veg cycle that the six hours the lights are off be completely dark. It would seem that total darkness is only crucial during flowering.

Is this correct? If not, why not? Has anyone here personally experienced any growing problems by not maintaining total darkness during vegging?

mine are covered with a black plastic flap. it is open on the bottom. it is inside my play room. i'm in and out of the room all day when the veg cycle is in dark. it gets a lot of leaked light. i see no problems.

Unlike the 12 hours of total darkness needed for flowering the dark period (if you use that) doesn't have to be total darkness. My veg side if open and gets light quit often during it's sleepy time.

If plants grow when it's dark why not 8 hours of dark instead of 6?

OR perhaps better yet...

Are you supposed to then change the darkness to be longer (e.g. in the beginning go for 6 hours of dark, and then changed to 8 hours)?
