screw equality, i love busting my ass and knowing im better then somebody.
I don't say you can't be better than anyone. All I'm saying is if wealth was more equally distributed (NOT COMPLETELY EQUAL - That is communism, please know the difference) Everyone would be better off. You would still be able to get more wealthy if you want (if money is the only thing you think about when being "better")
There are multiple other ways of being better other than money.. i.e respect, various skills (athletic, arts, knowledge to name a few)

What do you mean by equality? Do you mean workers should own the materials they use and the products they produce? Do you mean workers should have an equal say in how a company is run? Should the economy be planned from the top down or from the bottom up? Do you mean that opportunity should be distributed evenly? Do you mean all resources should be distributed equally? Should there be a central government or should collectives takes over the functions of more centralized governments?

Socialism isn't one thing. There are many conflicting theories so unless you define your vision of socialism the conversation is moot.

education isn't free, it is paid for by property taxes as i'm sure you know since you put it in quotes.

if you would like to talk about public education, let's do so. name me some powerful nations that don't have a public education system in place.

Haiti And Somalia
Haiti has public education. It's chronically underfunded but it is there. Though most schools are private and too few children receive a basic education.

http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/1982.htm
Although public education is free, the cost is still quite high for Haitian families who must pay for uniforms, textbooks, supplies, and other inputs. Due to weak state provision of education services, private and parochial schools account for approximately 90% of primary schools, and only 65% of primary school-aged children are actually enrolled. At the secondary level, the figure drops to around 20%. Less than 35% of those who enter will complete primary school. Though Haitians place a high value on education, few can afford to send their children to secondary school and primary school enrollment is dropping due to economic factors. Remittances sent by Haitians living abroad are important in paying educational costs. After the January 12, 2010 earthquake most schools in the greater Port-au-Prince area were not operating, though some schools re-opened on April 5. As of July 1, 2010, 75% of students in earthquake-affected areas had returned to school.

Prior to the earthquake, Haiti's government funded a mere 10 per cent of Haiti's elementary and secondary schools. The rest are funded privately with foreign assistance. Parents earning two dollars a day cannot afford fees, materials and uniforms, and must choose which of their children attends school. Half a million children don't attend school in Haiti. Many stop and start throughout the year and only four per cent finish high school.

Edit: Looks like Somalia is trying to offer public education as well.

Puntland President Mohamud Muse Hirsi "Adde" this week however announced that the regional government was to inaugurate salary payments for primary school teachers. Puntland is a semi-autonomous state within Somalia. It has its own president, but unlike neighbouring Somaliland - which declared independence in 1991 - Puntland has always vowed to remain an integral part of Somalia.

Some 200 teachers now stand to benefit from the move by the Puntland leader, according to the UN's Children's Fund (UNICEF). The President of Puntland also announced a massive drive to build more schools in Northeast Somalia during a speech he made in Bossaso, the regional capital, on Tuesday.
