It's Been a Trying Few Days...

I only hang in this forum, so I'm putting it here...

Two days ago I come home for lunch. My wife is at the answering machine listening to a message from my mom. She turns to me and says "This is the 2nd message 15 minutes apart and she says she's having a medical emergency! You need to call her!"...

I waste no time and dial. She answers and I immediately know something is wrong. She's slurring her words badly and asked me two question entirely from left field. My mother is diabetic and I'm thinking she's on her way into a diabetic coma. I say "Mom! What the hell are you calling me for! Get off the phone now and call 911!" She agrees and hangs up.

I turn to Seamaiden and say "I'm not sure she'll call. She didn't before." Seamaiden suggests I call 911, so I do. They verify that no call has come in from her number and they've dispatched paramedics. Note that I live in CA and my mom lives in Portland, OR.

OK...I get a call back from dispatch that she's awake, not lucid, but they've got her and are taking her to the hospital. Over the past fews days they still don't know what happened, but MRI shows no stroke. We "think" that since her diabetes meds were recently changed, and they read her blood glucose at over 500 when they arrived coupled with the fact that she had low sodium and some dehydration (it's been warm in Portland I understand) may have triggered the event.

She's being released tomorrow to a rehabilitation facility for 1-2 weeks so she'll be under supervision in case of another event. My decision and she agreed.

Now today...

Seamaiden really fucked up her knee back in May and she was scheduled for surgery today. We were to arrive at the hospital at 1:30PM. At noon, she's got a full-blown migraine and is vomiting. I tell her to call and cancel. She disagrees and tells me they'll give her something and it'll be good. I disagree, but take her down anyway. As I suspected, the surgeon sees her in excruciating pain and dry heaving (no food/liquid since 9PM last night) and tells us that he will not perform the procedure with her like that and we'll need to reschedule. We spend the next 3 hours in ER while they shoot her full of anti-nausea meds and pain meds...Totally fucked.

To add insult to injury, if they reschedule her surgery for late next week, I have this...http://www.toughmudder.com
I'm registered for the 17th and had a room reserved for 2 days and was going up to Squaw Valley (NorCal) on Thursday to acclimate.

Yeah, it's been hectic.

I hope everything works out for you. Her blood sugar being up in the 500 range is terrible. I'm surprised a tester could go that high. My mom is on the insulin pump. She checks her blood and it transmits the data to her pump and gives her the needed dosage. You might want to look into that.

On second thought: You have to change out the cannula yourself when the insulin runs out and the batteries and the tubing. If she lives alone that might be too much for her to deal with. Crap. :(

Tell me. But thanks for the well wishes. She gave me a scare yet there is no way she's moving back to CA. I hope this episode provokes her to begin exercising. We were up there over this last Christmas and I put together a regimen for her (based on age and physical limitations)...She never did it....GRRRRR.

i sometimes wish i was religious when i read posts like these so that i can say i am praying for you. but two hands in action can do more than a thousand clasped in prayer.

if you want someone to check up occasionally on your mom, mow the lawn, this or that, i am available. i live in portland and have all the time in the world on my hands. just pm me if i can be of any assistance in kicking your mom's ass, errr, i mean, keeping her on a healthy regimen and making sure she takes cares of herself. sounds like she has an independent streak in her.

hope all turns out well.

Just when it looks as if I'm ready to give up on humanity...It's someone like you UB that has to go and throw a wrench into it. It's folks like yourself that reaffirm my faith that there is kindness and caring in the world. Next time I'm up there, you and I are going to share a beer or two (or wine if that's your preference) and Seamaiden will bring some of her premium product...on my dime my friend. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

PS: tough mudder looks badass. i'd like to see how long i could even last.

Haven't changed a bit I see Faded. Well said my friend. My mother could have died, but in your world, who cares, right? I wouldn't even wish that upon an asshole of your magnitude. Keep up the good work buddy.

and it's in the politics section no less.

dude took the misfortune of 2 of the people closet to him and used it to brag/complain about his own issues.

yeah, i'm pretentious.

i don't seek sympathy from a grow forum, when i don't even smoke or grow. i find it silly that someone would.

I understand "comrehension" is not one of your strong points, but I believe I made myself clear in the initial post...Try and keep up, k? ;) **grin**
Well the opinions of worthless people are worthless. I'm just glad she got through this. I am religious and I WILL be praying for you and your mom.
