Is Bag Seed from Health Store really the way for Noobs?

I can't seem to tell if this is the right way to go for a newbie. Some threads state to totally bypass bag seeds and buy budget seeds. What really are bag seeds? Sativa or Indica?

bag seeds are not from the health food store - they are from your dealer and are just random seeds you find in a bag. The seeds that you can buy at a health store or in bird feed are sterilized with steam so they can't grow :( So the suggestion is to go for some budget seeds from a seed bank as opposed to just using random seeds, however your mileage may vary - chemdog started off as a bag seed, so the choice is yours. Seeds from good weed will grow good weed.

My opinion is you might as well go with good seeds, just manage your expectations. When you look at all the costs we incur to get started, a fucking seed is the least of it.

I think the reason why people sometimes say to start with bagseed is just because your first grow is all about figuring what you are doing. You are not likely to have absolute success no matter how much you read. It is a learning experience. So if you think of it that way, if you get a bag seed to sprout then you can test your set up and learn from it. But if you start with a good feminized seed, you are only out $10, you'll have seeds ready for grow #2 (assuming you order enough), you'll know you are planting girls, and you'll the benefit of good genetics.

If you search for hemp seeds on nuts.com you get shelled and un-shelled. I purchased some un-shelled. Do you think they will work?

Food seed is hemp man. You won't get smokeable bud from them.

Get seeds from weed you smoke or buy some cheap genetics - Sannie is not expensive and his are quality genetics, tons of other companies though.

Only reason I can see to grow hemp is if you want to fight the paper companies.

I'm on my first grow and I used bag seed. The seeds were saved because the weed was so good. I planted three seeds, all three grew great. Unfortunately, two of them were male so they met an untimely fate. I also used t12 florescents in a single two tube fixture with a couple of clamp-on incandescents on the side. Miracle grow soil, MG tomato food for veg & MG bloom booster for flowering. I haven't had any apparent problems w/ MG but I don't know what I could have accomplished with something else. I know a lot more now & I've also got a 600w light now as well. I've got a lot more to learn, but I think my instincts are good. I've grown a lot of flowers, vegetables, house plants, etc., but I've never been as involved with a plant as I am with this cannabis. I'm not ready for $100 seeds but I'm going to get something with a known heritage. Not because the seed I have is bad, but because I want to measure my efforts against a known entity.

Sadly, I'm going to have to cut this one way short. I'm going out of town for ten days starting next weekend and I have no one to take of her while I'm gone. :-( (You never forget your first one, amirite?) I can't wait to get back and get started again.

Bottom line: Start somewhere, anywhere. Get your hands dirty. Put a seed or two in some soil add a bit of water and watch the magic begin. Just don't use seeds you get from a store bought product, you'll be disappointed.

Like any hobby, your level of engagement is almost endless, and you'll only get back what you put into it.
Have fun, there's plenty of good folks here to help if you run into problems.

Sorry to sound like a smart ass but do you think you can buy pistachios, shelled or unshelled, raw or roasted, at Trader Joe's and end up with a pistachio tree?
Umm pistachios a a bit different. It's a tree not a plant-like shrub like weed. Most tree seeds require stratification which is 6 months in the refrigerator before they sprout. I have done this with grape seeds and chestnuts to get them to root.

Why do people here say that Shrooms are insanely hard to grow? I've mastered spawning grain to poo to get monstrous yield. So many that you don't know what to do with them.

Do you think that using Hemp seeds as a trial and error approach to see how well they grow is good? They are related, so how could I go wrong with trying?

What is a budget strain that you suggest? I've looked at auto flowering strains, but I'm uncertain if this is the right path. I'm leaning towards Afghan 100% Indica.
