Weaver put a realistic rubber turtle in the middle of a lane on a busy road near campus. Then he got out of the way and watched over the next hour as seven drivers swerved and deliberately ran over the animal. Several more apparently tried to hit it but missed.

"I've heard of people and from friends who knew people that ran over turtles. But to see it out here like this was a bit shocking," said Weaver, a 22-year-old senior in Clemson's School of Agricultural, Forest and Environmental Sciences.

To seasoned researchers, the practice wasn't surprising. The number of box turtles is in slow decline, and one big reason is that many wind up as roadkill while crossing the asphalt, a slow-and-steady trip that can take several minutes.

Sometimes humans feel a need to prove they are the dominant species on this planet by taking a two-ton metal vehicle and squishing a defenseless creature under the tires, said Hal Herzog, a Western Carolina University psychology professor.

my ex gf was on her way to work one morning when she saw a turtle trying to cross the street.. her being her, she stopped her car in the middle of the road and put on her blinkers and tried to shu the thing across the road in one piece..
after making sure it got across safe and sound, she went to get back into her car and found she locked herself out.. car running and parked dead in the middle of the street.. :(

had to call a tow company and paid like $150 or so for them to break into her car.. she wasn't upset about the money or anything.. there are a few good peps out there still imo.. :D

Mean bastards. My pet turtle is 25 years old. He is a red earred slider. Bought it for $5 when I was 24. Think I might have to will it to somebody when I die. Of course his name is Franklin. Takes 2 hands to pick him up. We go for a walk to the end of the driveway...takes us a week

i do believe she said it's spayed / neutered when i brought that up c/n...
Maybe it's sick then. Cats can get odd urinary complaints.

But my "theory A" is that she thinks it was but was sold a bill of goods ... easy enough to check if it's a male. cn

I had a cat that did this, was a urinary tract infection. if I smell real hard I can still smell the cat urine that seeped into the hardwood. that was 2 years ago.

I heard a guy speak at a conference who was hit by a car and almost killed cause his girlfriend insisted he stop the car and save some critter on the road (better not of been a fuckin turtle). Anyways I won't swerve or pull over for nothing unless its a deer bear or moose. I hit a seagull once that wanted a french fry off the highway more than it wanted to live. That thing was stuck to my front grill for about a mile with one wing flapping on the hood.
