How to germinate seeds

I want to give my utmost apologies to those of you who were awaiting the pictures of 24 hours. I wasn't able to do anything the first day due to batteries and the second day I wasn't home. I will take pictures right now if I can. For those of you who were wondering about how long it took I had roots at 22 hours. I haven't transplanted due to being over busy but I will get them in a cup of soil so you guys can watch them grow also :D I am off to take the pictures and will return shortly.

I took pictures but can't find my card reader damit. I will do this tomorrow for you guys as well as do a cloning experiment thread which I will post here as well.

Sorry it took so long everyone but here are the pictures. When I checked them on the second day they had just sprouted roots. When I transplanted them the roots on most of them were about an inch long. When transplanting them I made sure to keep the head of the shell right at the edge of the soil to where you can almost see the seed and it's that simple. If using rockwool cubes I will do some of those later today for those of you who prefer rockwool as opposed to the soil. Enjoy

Mind you these plants have had absolutely no light in their life so far... Here they are as of now and I will finish planting them tomorrow and move them under some veg lights... Pictures

Lemme see If I have this straight, I'm supposed to take cracked seeds & put them in the growing medium....
care to send me about 100 practice seeds, lmao I'm a bit of a clumsy bastard & my hands shake... I'll try it one of these days but when I start my first grow I'm going to use more of a hands off approach. I think I'll have better luck.

I have somewhat shaky hands also (hypoglycemic) so I usually rest my middle or ring finger on something while dealing with seeds, it helps with the shakiness. If you're serious about some seeds I may be able to throw a few together for ya. I can't promise anything though because more than likely it'll be a seed or 2 from a bud I grew (hermie)

A 12 hour soak and into soil works great. seeds pop in 1-4 days. Good job joker, I never tried yours. lol trying to adapt your thing for clones.

Haha yea I love that method of cloning but I think I am going to get my feet wet with my new aerocloner and see how it does. Wish me luck :D I like this way cuz I know for a fact they have roots and don't have to wonder "well are they gonna come up soon or what?" Haha. Hoped this thread would help those who are having trouble germinating with the ways they have already tried.

I just reviewed this thread and realized I never put up the pictures of the Rockwool cube method. I do apologize for those of you who were expecting it. I must have misplaced the pictures and just found them today. Here are the pictures of how to plant into rockwool cubes. Any questions please feel free to ask them :D

Yet I certainly have placed them with the tap root facing down and have had decent results. This past week I tried this method with my last great white shark seed and it basically never emerged from the soil, and when I checked the soil to see what was up after about four days I noticed that the seedling had indeed sprouted yet was positioned in an upside down U, if that makes sense.

I've searched everywhere for conclusive results yet I seem to just be confusing myself the more I research it, I know for a fact that in my previous grows placing the tap root first has worked, anyone had good results otherwise? Help out a homie with his first time post!

Wow I've never seen that diagram before...it goes against what alot of people would say is the "correct" way to plant seeds...weird.


Where did you get that diagram from?

have you done the paper towel method were you put your seeds on a moist paper towel fold it gently and place it in a cup with a little bit of water and if so does it work? and if u dont know im finding out lol

It does work and everyone that has grown has tried this method. I used to germinate this way when I was young and starting to grow for my first time. Hid it from the family by putting it in paper towels in a zip lock bag and wetting it down. I would get sprouts about 3-7 days with that method. This method here I have roots in 2 days max and inch long roots by the time they are 4 days old. Makes for a good healthy start for the seedlings.

I always plant the root up then it curves down. Tried several times to grow without much sucess with the tap root down. They just always seemed to die on me till i found this forum and did some reading. The picture earlier in this post explains it.

Try either way but I am growing the root down. I have been growing for 5-7 years (give or take) and have never had a problem with root down. Has always worked best for me.

I accidentally left mine in for 2 weeks and they happened to grow inside there without light or soil. You should be able to get away with a few days but I wouldn't recommend that you leave them as long as I did.

i planted them finally
my first non germinate seed is starting to sprout!!
woooo

any advice at this point be sides the basics?

This is all basic knowledge but I'd say keep her humid and keep the soil moist. Not too much light needed right now until those sucker leafs come out (small round leafs) then you can up from 1 cfl - 2 cfls and move em closer, then when she gets her 3 point leafs you can add a couple more bulbs or up her to a bigger light. Keep it small on the light until she gets to the right size. Keep the temps down around 75*F if you can. A good way to keep it humid is to get a small pack of clear party cups from Wal-Mart and place those over her until she's too big for that. That will create a small green house for her to stay nice and humid while she grows.
