Homemade Cool Tube Cab

I'm looking for a cheaper way to keep my grow closet cool.
I have a 400wMH bulb and reflector, ballast is kept out of the closet so that helps some.
Temps range from 65F at night to 90F during some warm days.
Its only getting hotter as it turns to summer and I need to find a way to cool it now.

I love the pyrex round bread thing and some ducting, but the way to get the air in and out is the problem. Don't really want to get a large fan, not only b/c of the initave cost but for the cost of running it too.

Any help. I can get pics if you'd like.
thats right,,summer is comin,,so why cheap on the exhaust,,it's only an expense to buy it,,it barely costs to run it,,and will totally help your grow through the HoLE way

OK I have found some inexpensive in-line duct fans that I think will work. The shitty part is staying up all night while my plants are in the dark so I can take the light out and rig it up.

Thanks HoLE

cool greenbean,,you know,,if it doesnt take long,,just pull them out while the light is supposed to be on,,it won't harm them,,if your gonna be like 20 minutes or so,,just have a plan ready,,get er done,,and throw em back under the light,,anyway,,good luck all the way

Quick question HoLE, i was about to construct a wooden growcab similar to what you got going on but my pops said i should buy a metal storage cabinet ($289.00 fuckin dollars!!!) because he thinks the possibility of fire is too great. Is there any fire risk (even with a inline 170cfm fan) involved at all?? Thanks & Much Love

289 is a heap for a cabinet,,if you properly connect the wiring with the little twist on caps or good electrical tape,,I see no problems with fire,,even if your bulb blew,,it's still inside glass,,and prolly would not cause much,,if any damage,,nor would it start a fire,,best of luck TEUFEL

Nice build, forget paying all that money, do it yourself.

I do drywall, metal studs, plaster, spent 3 years boat building.

I little McGuyver, bob villa, and Martha Stewart, saves a lot of dough.

Can't wait to see your girls.

Hey, Hole, I'm going to start a thread in grow room design.

"Construction workers of RIU tell us what you do"

See if there are any other construction guys around.

I'll put a link in my SIG.

Fuck your plants are nice, thanks for the link.

damn dude, looks like you know exactly what to do, noiiiice! I ran into a minor speedbump making my 'coolcab ripoff'. The reflector that comes wwith the light i bought is like 6 inches too deep and won't fit into the 18'' deep storage cabinet lol. and with your homemade cooltube, does the air just to the right of your bulb exhaust out that PVC pipe and circulate around inside the cab or does it exit outside?

sorry bout your reflector,,I still don't have one,,in such a small area,,I wonder if it matters,,,as for the tube,,yes the right side is the open end,,it draws the air through and past the light,,and exits out the top,,the fan I have is strong enough to pull the air in the bottom of the cab,,move the plants a little,,and exhaust the heat,,actually had to bend a heavy wire and stick it in the end of the tube,,to keep it from sucking itself to the inner wall:mrgreen::hump::joint::peace:

What are the temp difference in the room compared with the cabinet? I'm in the middle of emulating your grow box and this is my first grow (so far so female!) I've learned a Hole lot from this site and your post is the A1 on the steak.

lights:
150 HPS
5 27 watt 5500 k
normal ambient temp for me without lights is about 80-82 F

Thanks man.

Hole, let me congratulate you, that has got to be the best home made cooltube design iv ever seen. my set up is below with a 600. before i payed out for my cooltube i was looking into making my own version, i work in the building trade so i do loads of plumbing and have all the tools, materials plumbing fittings etc and skills nesessary to do it but i could never find a glass tube big enough, or anything even up to scratch, until i just saw your tube. now you have given me ideas of swapping my envirolites in my veg room for an air cooled mh because my veg room is too small for a hid lamp in a standard open reflector, and i dont wanna pay out for another cooltube when i can make my own, i already have a spare 250w ballast and mh bulb and a spare 5" inline fan and loads of spare 5" duct knocking around, so it brings me to my questions if you dont mind.
1. whats the diameter, length and glass thickness of that round bread tube?
2. do you have a link to where you purchased it from, and do you know if they ship to europe?
3. how exactly did you mount the E40 lamp fitting in the the poly-pipe? it looks like a screw going through the pipe and into the fitting, all my lamp fittings are ceramic, did you drill into the ceramic?
4. i assume the bread tube is for baking the bread in, therefore its pyrex or another type of heatproof glass?
5. last but not least are you planning on putting any kind of reflector over the tube? id probably cut the fitting off my envirolite reflector and mount the reflector over the tube.
thanks mate and job well done
