Hey son, I might give you an extra $20 for your allowance this week like you asked for, but since you got caught shoplifting from the store, I will require you to return that merchandise and apologize first.

Kid: What? that's extortion!

Guess what?

It's not legal and not without precedent for indicting a Texas Govenor for the exact same thing. It's against Texas law and Perry may actually have to resign over this
Texas and Iran. One has an economy run on oil, almost a quarter of its citizens living in poverty and leadership composed of mainly religious nutjobs. The other one is Iran.
Nothing will happen to Perry, this isn't even slightly a problem, stop listening to the media , you are like a yapping little dog.

Texas is one of two states with job growth. Oh, and it has 3 of the USA's 10 largest cities. I have never had a bad experience in Texas. Have you ever been there? Texas exports more goods than California and New York combined. Has the second highest State GDP, and would be the 14th largest economy in the world. Agriculture is the biggest industry.

One question, were you using Bucky math when you equated Texas' 16% Poverty rate to 1/4?? FYI 1/4th =25% That rate has been a problem since 1980, I don't think it was Perry that was governor then.

If you went up the chain of command for the DA's supervisors, ultimately who do you end with?

Governor of Texas[edit]
In 1914, Ferguson was elected Governor of Texas running as an anti-prohibitionist Democrat. He served in this position from January 19, 1915 to August 25, 1917.
After being re-elected in 1916, Ferguson vetoed the appropriations for the University of Texas. The veto was retaliation against the university because of its refusal to dismiss certain faculty members whom Ferguson found objectionable. This move spurred the drive to impeach Ferguson. A leading Ferguson critic on the UT campus was historian Eugene C. Barker. Ferguson was indicted on nine charges in July 1917

He has the legal authority to veto the funds.

I hope he loses. He is on his way out as governor, and this would make for a fitting end to his term in office.

Kinky Freidman all the way.

everyone is missing the most major point IMO:

state funding which will never get to the citizen it's supposed to fund.

why do politicians insist on playing "chicken" with their constituents' lives?

He doesnt have the right to try an coerce an elected official in the state of Texas by threatening to withhold funds.
They indicted a Texas govenor for the same exact thing
So it is not unprecedented
He has a choice. Resign or get convicted of a Felony.
I hope if he resigns they still prosecute him.

It's the reasoning for the veto and not the veto itself. He can veto what he wishes. He has that right as governor. It's the coercion, etc that could get him in trouble. If he never made that statement in public no one would know and it would just be another veto.

Schuylarr, it's state money that Rick Perry can veto it's use of. I guess any veto anyone ever uses in regards to departmental funding is the same thing? Depriving the citizens of their money?

Don't get me wrong, I hope he is found guilty and is gone, but get it right at least. He's done enough wrong without the bs. The history: one involved a college faculty not controlled by the state, the other is governmental department budget. Not the exact same thing, but I hope the results are the same.

If he is found not guilty it would not surprise me. This is Texas after all. If he is found guilty I wouldn't be surprised either. Travis county leans left without a doubt.

Perry's indictment is the first of a sitting governor in Texas on such charges since 1917 when, according toThe Dallas Morning News, James "Pa" Ferguson was indicted for vetoing funding for the University of Texas in an attempt to push out faculty and staff. He resigned.
You just contradicted your earlier statement. To quote: "The last Texas governor to face criminal charges was James E. “Pa” Ferguson, who was indicted in 1917 by a Travis County grand jury on embezzlement and eight other charges. His case also involved a veto that stirred anger: Mr. Ferguson vetoed the entire appropriation to the University of Texas because it had refused to fire certain faculty members. The state Senate voted to impeach him, but he resigned first.".......... So were you lying then or lying now?

Not according to the statement you made earlier. You said he was indicted for embezzlement and 8 other charges. He merely aroused anger for the veto. Politicians frequently anger the opposition. It's not illegal. As Governor he has veto power. Period. They never indicted a Governor for exercising his veto power. Resignation wouldn't negate a felony. I doubt he'll resign until he's elected president, but if you like, you can hold your breath until he does.

Ferguson was indicted for embezzlement, not exercising a veto. Resignation is voluntary so "Perry may actually have to resign over this" is incorrect. What you going to do? Coerce him by withholding funding? Didn't you claim that was illegal?

The money wasn't to go to a citizen. It was to go to a government office. The money now just remains in the state's treasury until it gets spent on something else FOR the citizens of Texas.

The veto was retaliation against the university because of its refusal to dismiss certain faculty members whom Ferguson found objectionable. This move spurred the drive to impeach Ferguson. A leading Ferguson critic on the UT campus was historian Eugene C. Barker. Ferguson was indicted on nine charges in July 1917. The Texas House of Representatives prepared 21 charges against Ferguson and the Senate convicted him on 10 of those charges, including misapplication of public funds and receiving $156,000 from an unnamed source.[3] Freshman legislator George Peddy of Shelby County, who was also the president of the UT student body known as a critic of Ferguson, was in military training at Camp Funston in Kansas, when in 1917 the impeachment proceedings came before the House. He managed to return to Austin for the vote.[4] The Texas Senate removed Ferguson as governor and declared him ineligible to hold office under Texas jurisdiction. Despite this ruling, Ferguson ran for governor in the 1918 Democratic primary, but he was defeated in the Democratic primary by his successor, William P. Hobby of Houston, previously the lieutenant governor

“I wholeheartedly and unequivocally stand behind my veto, and will continue to defend this lawful action of my executive authority as governor,” he said in a statement. “We don’t settle political differences with indictments in this country. It is outrageous that some would use partisan political theatrics to rip away at the very fabric of our state’s constitution.”

NO i guess Perrys way of settling things is to threaten to defund an elected officials task force unless they quit.

The same thing Ferguson tried to do in 1917, same charges
