HIGH TIMES 2011 MEDICAL CANNABIS CUP coming to Detroit.

As I contemplate a 16 hour drive I would like to know if someone who does not have a medical card or whatever can venture out and acquire the goods, me and a bud would like to go but have no idea if we will only be allowed to watch someone speak or will get to partake in the goods...I'd also love to take a winning strain home in seed & oz form!

No – But passes are transferable and may be resold to someone else if you are unable to attend.

How can my Michigan-based medical cannabis dispensary compete in the HIGH TIMES Medical Cannabis Cup?
Entry into the HIGH TIMES Medical Cannabis Cup is limited to legally operating, licensed medical cannabis dispensaries in the state of Michigan. For more information on entering an indica, a sativa, cannabis concentrates or medical-cannabis infused edibles, please contact us directly at (212) 387-0500 or by email [email protected]

Where, exactly, does this exciting new event take place?
Daytime events, including the expo, all seminars, and the awarding of HIGH TIMES Medical Cannabis Cups will take place at Berts Warehouse – 2379 Russle St. – Detroit, MI 48207 (CLICK FOR EVENT MAP).

On Saturday night (October 15, 2011), HIGH TIMES will host a party with special musical guests and entertainers.
All attendees must be 18 and older.
ID will be required at the door.

Do I need to be a medical marijuana patient to attend?
The expo and party will be open to all adults from any state.
An outdoor medicating section of the expo facility will be available and will accommodate the needs of medical marijuana patients. Medical professionals will be available on site.

Do I get any cannabis as part of my ticket price?
Due to Michigan law we cannot give away cannabis, which is why we’ve kept the ticket price as low as possible while still putting on a world-class event.

What?! It’s the Medical Cannabis Cup and I don’t get any free cannabis?
Sorry, that’s a promise we just can’t make, but we do promise you an event celebrating the incredibly diverse and emerging medical marijuana movement, including a two-day cannabis and hemp expo that will feature cultivation seminars with HIGH TIMES editors Danny Danko and Nico Escondido, activism sessions with leaders of the medical marijuana movement and major cannabis celebrities, an all-star awards ceremony, and an unforgettable pot party with surprise musical guests.

Will I get to judge the strains, and vote for the HIGH TIMES Medical Cannabis Cup?
All ticket buyers will receive a list of Michigan dispensaries participating in the HIGH TIMES Medical Cannabis Cup. State sanctioned medical marijuana patients can visit those dispensaries on their own and sample each dispensary’s entered strain in the weeks leading up to the Cup.
The HIGH TIMES Medical Cannabis Cups will be awarded by a panel of independent experts based on extensive sampling in a blind tasting. This expert panel will be at the expo on Sunday evening to announce their decisions and award the HIGH TIMES Medical Cannabis Cups to California’s top medical marijuana providers.

Is the HIGH TIMES Medical Cannabis Cup wheelchair friendly?
Daytime events at Berts Warehouse are definitely wheelchair friendly, though you should contact the venue directly with any specific questions or concerns. As the Saturday night party is as a yet to be determined location, we don’t have any details, though we will update this FAQ as soon as we know more.

Do you offer any travel packages or hotel recommendations?
Not at the moment, but possibly in the future.

Is HIGH TIMES still hosting the HIGH TIMES Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam?
Yes, of course. Those interested in making the ultimate pot pilgrimage to Amsterdam this November for the globe’s premiere marijuana event should head tocannabiscup.com now for more info!
Hopefully this will answer some of your questions.

Thank you very much Beagle. I am new to Michigan and am trying to establish residency, so I do not have my card yet. My question was would I still be able to attend. It seems as though I can still attend I just cant smoke there. It may be worth the ticket price if I can pick up some shwag or new glass. Something to do I guess.

There's nothing pretty about eastpointe or warren :P

But with that in mind you all can rest assured that downtown is pretty safe. A lot of the city is problematic, but they're strengthening from downtown/midtown and out. Heavy policing and such, you should be fine as long as you don't 1) stand out or 2) make an ass of yourself.

I asked High times if there were going to be dispensaries allowed and what the VIP entailed (like if there were any specific VIP areas or if it just got you into the afterparty). Here was what they sent back:

"VIP tix get you into the HIGH TIMES party on Saturday night. The daytime events are open to all 18+ and the medicating area is open to all with valid medical cards. Only sponsors/booths will be allowed to bring any of their "wares" to the event. No selling of medicine is allowed."

but you just said Detroit was safe??
Detroit is a gigantic city bro, do I really need to explain how all cities throughout the entire world have good and bad areas. Some much more than others. There area where this is to take place and plenty of other areas downtown are very safe. Parts of detroit are also very very unsafe, like Dr.D just said, if you are not familiar with the area, then I definitely wouldn't recommend exploring.

edit: does anybody have any insight into the musical guests, or what type of musical guests they've had at the cups in other cities?

I bet the afterparty will not be advertised because it WILL be a giant ass smoke fest. If you aren't a patient go to the afterparty and get the vip...you will get baked for sure. I wouldn't worry about the cops at all. I have been right by cops when smoking and it don't even phase them. Think about it....you really think a Detroit cop is going to bug you for a doobie....not worth their time or the paperwork and they don't have room in the jails for that down there. Now oakland county is a whole different story. Just go to the event and stay downtown...there is plenty to do to fill up a weekends worth of time. Like keefers was saying....don't explore unless you know where you're going. One wrong turn and you are in Crackville USA =)

If I still lived in Mi I would definitely be attending. Couldn't take the cold anymore so have moved south. I lived and worked all over the downtown and metro areas of Detroit before the medical law was passed. As far as the D being safe, I would agree that downtown is the safest, but NO city is "safe". As others have said, If you don't make an ass out of your self, mind your own fucking business and aren't a crackhead or junkie DPD will be there in force to protect your ass as long as you don't stray too far off the beaten path. Card or No card DPD doesn't give a shit about weed in small quantities.

Off subject but my run in with DPD Before the medical law was passed Detroit cops didn't care about pot. I used to get my weed in Warrendale and SW Detroit both areas being "cracktown" and far from downtown but having some of the best bud I could easily find. On one occasion in Warrendale (not to be confused with the city of Warren) I was pulled over by DPD. They knew I was out of place and there to get drugs but thought it was crack. After a quick look at my DL the cop asked me why I was there and not to lie cuz they already knew and would find it. I had a 1/4 in my front pocket and looked him straight in the eye and said "I came to get some weed" He smiled and said "weed huh? step out of the car" once I did he asked if I had any weapons or anything that would poke him. I said no and his next question was "where's it at". I told him my right front pocket. He proceeded to pat me down and stuck his hand into my pocket, felt the weed but didn't pull it out. After he was done with a quick search of the car and didn't find any crack he told me that I should get my weed somewhere else, this wasn't a safe area and he didn't want to see me again cuz it may be in a body bag. Told me this was my lucky day and that was that. Venture N of 8 mile, such as Warren, or Eastpoint, W. of Telegraph, such as Redford or Livonia, and you will find the most arrogant, self serving, crooked pigs on the planet. I aint saying Detroit cops aren't, they just got way more to do then worry about weed.

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone is attending the cup this year in the D? I am going and would like to connect with a few others that are going and we can all get together in the med tent and match down our best nugs?...maybe even invite Subcool in the circle? If you are not going you should :hump:. I'm still deciding if I want to get the VIP pass for $60 or just a day pass at the door for $20..? What is everyone else doing?
