Here in virginia they fly the copters alot I've read that marijana puts off heat or something that can be detected. how far spread apart do my plants need to be and how many is safe to put in one area so that the copters wont bust me?

None.
The copters and the heat thing is the craziest thing I've read all day. It is not even plausible.
Wanna be a successful outdoor grower w/o getting busted? Just grow one plant. Or grow as many as you want....on your neighbors
property.

at one time, cops were allowed to use flir (the heat detector) to bust indoor grows... but today, im almost positive they are not allowed to do so in the united states without a warrant...

They find your plants because of the color. Everything else is turning brown waiting for winter and your plants that have been fed properly are still green. Put 3 per plot and keep em spread out. So if the fuzz pinches one of your plots you still have more.

I have read on a thread somewhere here that they do in fact give off a heat signature and spotting in this manner has been done, I don't think any law defends you from being spotted by a flir camera outdoors, how do you prove them liable anyways? But did not go further in the thread as I grow indoors and not in the USA. Try to find it and bust the myth for yourself before just taking anyone's word for it. Better safe than sorry!

marijuana reflects light higher at certain wavelenghts then native crops. they shoot these wavelenghts at the ground and read the reflective signature. marijuana is VERY distinct. google "how to cover marijuana reflective signature"

but there is no 100% way to cover it. plant in small patches and space them far. and dont leave any incrimininating evidence behind.

True story, My Grandpa's friend flies for the sherrifs department looking for marijuana plants in the Santa Cruz Mountian's and such. He tells me that they are mainly looking for BIG PLOTS with hundreds of plants. And that if they find a small personal plot of maybe 5 or less THEY WONT EVEN TOUCH IT. Because it takes a lot of man power and rescources to go in and irradicate the plants. So KEEP IT SMALL and your alllll goood

what about growing in the forest. I am in coastal rainforest and it gets pretty hot there in summer, I want to have lots of trees around it to keep from peripheral view and some shrubbery etc around to let it blend in with vertical view (death from above). I agree with what most people are saying, small patches boys (and girls? any girls or is it all just boys?) maybe 3-5 per area, and maybe several areas all within a comfortable distance. This way even if the gov't doesn't find your shit, and rippers do, the rippers might just take the one patch they find and get the fuck out before they get shot. PS rippers and snitches sleep in ditches or with the fishes.

Here in Cali the helicopters use 'flir' to look for the coolness of the watered dirt.

Dry dirt is hot, but watered plants have cool dirt. They are looking at the heat of the dirt not the plants. They fly around at night and look for the "blue" spots.

i googled that quote, got a link back to this page and nothing else
this is information i would like to know, very curious just how small the thresh hold is for a 'no detect'

like someone else said, you do seem to give a lot of knowledgable information and even better your not a dick about ti like 99% of the other members on this forum.

here is a video of how FLIR is used. (on a vineyard but you get the idea)

i think this may be of some interest, excerpted from the publication - Controlled Spectral Experiments and Biological Control of Cannbis Sp. - 2008
it's a PDF so copy and paste may take some more effort, but here is an interesting snippet - 'Many classification errors led to the conclusion that the method was not successful at discriminating Cannbis from the imagery'
this paper was authored by the Candian Police Research Center
the method of IR signature detection may be only at the research stage(my words), the warnings i see on the web seem to be mostly copy and paste

Some people need a lesson in Botany. Marijuana DOES NOT give off a "heat signature"....People that use 1000 watt HPS and/or 1000 Watt MH are the ones that can get caught. Hell yeah the cops have equipment that can detect if you are running such crazy ass bulbs in your home, but to say that marijuana can be found from a "heat signature" outside is just plain ignorant.
