+1 on smartguy's response... whoever said that about soil has NO experience growing ANYTHING obviously... sorry i get defensive when people say crazy stuff... i had a friend when i first started growing who said this old man he knows "who grows some fire" told him that when you pick the plant you pull the whole thing (roots and all) out of the pot and hang it upside down, and if you torch the roots it'll send the stored energy into the plant and make it more potent...Always be logical, food is grown in soil and it doesn't taste nasty... anyways, i use regular soil i purchased from my local gardening center, it's not cheap but it's organic.. It's just a local planting mix that they produce themselves, and i use the full line of Fox Farms nutes and i have had some amazing results! never check PH and i haven't had any issues just yet, but i use the full 3 part liquid and 3 part soluble. under 400w hps and i use 2 glopanel 45's for vegging... i've picked up tips, tricks, and tools.... take your time and learn from your mistakes... Soil has millions of little bacteria, microbes, organisms, etc. that all interact with the soil and the food/water you put into it and produce waste products that add to flavor and potetency, these things cannot be replicated in hydro, and that's why some people say hydro doesn't taste as good as soil... goodluck with your grow and always be skeptical of things that either sound too good to be true (u can use your piss as fertilizer!) yea, and you could eat shit too, but i dont suggest it... or just aren't logical!

yes you can always start with a blank slate as long as you can amend the hell out of it think of it as a self watering hydro set up you have a medium like cococore and your adding what your plants need or want
