I'm planning on attempting some air-layering
propagation techniques on some landscape shrubs soon.

wondering what trees would be best suited to practice grafting in my climate zone. a multi-fruit tree would be nice, but if i stuck just a few varieties of apples, it'd be more likely to work.

Friends of mine have a 4 apple tree in their yard. It was sold commercially, and it was made from grafts.
I think it's been growing for 5 years+ now, and I remember them saying fruit was coming off after 3 years.
So yes, it should work if you're using apples.
