floresnts vs hps

ok so heres the deal can i get the same amounts of bud useing 400 watt hps or 400watt equv floresnts will they porduce the same?????!


k can anyone tell me about how much more my power bill will be runnin a 400 watt balist ?

to put it simple no you cant, look at it as say when people get 1g per watt with a 400w thats over 14 ounces of dry weed, im pretty damn sure its not possible with flouros or cfl's

i know cfl's and flouros can produce buds of the same quality as HPS but just not the same amount, with a 400w hps you can penetrate such a bigger area.

i would also have to argue that tamjam. i would say for the average noob grower you are likely to get just as good of a yield, though admittedly a Pro-Grower can definitely do more.

ive seen a good grower pull out significantly more than most people can from Fluoros, though keep in mind this is T5HO, not just a few cfls or anything.

not wanting to argue, only saying that its all in the hands of the grower, to an extent. a professional who is very well schooled in MJ Botony could definitely do more with HPS... but that same farmer could also make some Fluoro harvests look better than many people could do with a HPS. Tam is right, if all you wanted was the shorter answer lol.

oh and MCL, and GL with your grow

ya flouros are the most efficient for veg.
i mean besides metal halides.

hps gets you weed that makes you want to brag to your homies about it.
florescents dont. (not tryin to clown the flouro growers out there, do your thing)

I personally think that if you plant and walk away then an HPS is gonna produce more but like KK said I feel an experienced hand can damn near grow good bud with a flashlight. I never bought into the "experience yields more" theory until my second and third grow. It is true IMO that experience is more valuable than equipment.

My Hydro store owner who has used and has access to all the HID in the world chooses to use a T5 set up (both for veg & flowering). I use the same set up as he does.

You can read my story about how he threw every idea I had about growing MJ out the window in my Grow Journal if you want the whole story. (He down-sold himself a grand by STRONGLY recommending me to go this route)

if you are using 400 watts of cfls now and want to know the difference of using 400 watts of hps instead, 400 watts is 400 watts, regardless of type of light.. gotta add maybe five dollars or so a month for the ballast though...
if you want to find out exactly how much it will cost you a month, look at your bill and see what you get charged per killowatt hour.. its probably around say $.15/kwh or so.. take that amount and times it by how many watts you have or are planning on using and times that by how many hours the lights will be on, 18 a day or 12 a day, and lastly times that number by 30 for the cost per month.. hope that helps you out some...

you can yes. is it wise? thats debated. some say that there is no difference. others swear that they see more (faster) growth with 24. Even more others, state that the 6 hours, (or even 20/4) gives it a few hours of dark time to worry about internal processes and root growth. Iam not sure which one of these is closest to the truth, but i do tend to believe that the dark period helps. i personally use a 18/6 schedule.

Right on, I use a 1,000watt HPS 1 big exhaust fan, two humidifyers (at times) and a space heater. My growroom runs from $50-$75.00 more amotnth depending on outside enviroment.... heaters running, humids ect.

I don't believe anybody here has yet considered/mentioned how HID lighting is still more efficient than any fluorescent (CFL, T5's including High Output, etc.), when we compare the lumen output as well as accounting for photosynthetic variability between bands of light.

In terms of lumens per watt: HPS can put out up to 140 lumens/watt, MH around 125 lumens/watt and fluorescent between 40-80/watt. CFL's are the least efficient; but metal halides produce more photosynthetically active light despite being slightly less efficient in terms of total lumen output. Not every lumen/wavelength of light being emitted by a particular bulb is useful for carrying out photosynthesis.

Then of course when you consider the amount of heat being emitted by the bulbs/ballast and the potential cost of cooling the lights and/or room it might make high output fluorescent lighting a tad more appealing. Still HID lighting certainly seems to penetrate the canopy better.

yea, you guys are all forgeting its not the watts that grow plants, lumans.
dont matter what kind of light you have, has long as you meet the proper
lumans a square ft.
now keeping the grow area a proper humid and temp is diff.
hid lighting has a MUCh higher lumans to square ft.
but they do have new t5 systems that almost meet the hps lumans
ratio. It depends on the grow space. your in a small closet/tent
400 watt sodium it is..
nice open circulated area, go ahead and use 6-7 panels.
why not..
its varys on grower i guess.


Now me, 400 watt panel veg to 600 watt sodium flower.
just because thats me though. iv flowered with 50,000 lumans of fluroesent lighting.
i yeilded less yea.. but not much and bud was sticker. not better of worse potency wize.
