*experiment* 12/12 from seed CFL grow

Just setting this up now, so pics will be a few days out....but wanted to get the journal posted so what kind of buzz (pun intended) it generates

I have a 31"(H) x 12"(w) x 12"(W) shelf that I've already started to retrofit for this purpose. Painted flat white, two coats for optimum reflectivity.

I will be using CFLs for the entire grow. 2:1 ratio of 2700k and 6500k. I will probably be able to get at least 8 lights in this little box...possibly more once i figure out some logistics.

All bag seed, most from prime bags. Potting soil / perlite mix to start, may transplant into FF ocean forsest once stable enough.

Thinking solo cup grow...i can fit 9 into my box comfortably. Taking into account the size of the box, my powerstrip light fixture and height of the solo cups...i have about 20" of space for my plants (read: 20" max for plants)

I'm off tomorrrow, and will get this ball rolling and post some pics. I will try my best to be as detailed as possible, as I'm curious how a 12/12 for seed will go.

I'm not looking for massive yields here, just something to try and see how it goes.

Any and all input is welcome! Lets do this together.

ok...I should really plan a bit better! Sorry to anyone who has been watching this...with the holidays and all I havent had too much time to put any work into this. BUT... The box is almost done, my light fixture is in place and holes for fans are set. I will post up some pics ASAP.

check how your box is handling the temps in there before you germinate.. better to be ready before the "pressure" is on..

those autos need hps for full potential.

Im not running "auto"s per-se....just a little experiment with some bagseed. I'm not really a noob at this point, but still tinkering with my ways.

Should have some pics up later tonight...they are on the camera. Temps stay at a lovely 74F when the "door" is off...might have to add one more outtake fan for when the "door" is closed... The "door" is some blackout curtain velcro'd around the perimeter.

But thanks for looking guys...this ball will get rolling soon enough.

sorry its been so long, have definitely NOT abandoned this project. I had a slight heat issue with the original "door" which was blackout curtain velcro'd around the outer perimeter for ease of access. temp was a steady 92 w lights on.

Now, things are good in the high 70s - low 80s with my new "door" which is carboard with sunshade (the thing used to keep your car cool in the summer) hot glued to it.
Temp issue fixed AND added reflectivity. WIN/WIN!

Here are some pics with the door OFF...more to come as this thing prgresses.

HAPPY NEW YEARS EVERYONE and BE SAFE in 2011!:peace:

lookin good man, I'm sub'n so lets see this 12/12 lol I'm doing a bagseed 12/12 experiment i just started tonight. i have 3 that have been vegging for 2 weeks and i put the smallest of the 3 in with my big girl thats flowering under 5 42watt cfls. It's about 3" tall and has 4 sets of leaves now, so we'll see what happens.

From what i've researched it's pretty much a crapshoot, but I just dont understand how you plant outside and it is NOT 24/0 and the plant does work...why doesnt it work like that indoors?
I just just know HOW to grow weed....I no basically nothing on the actual science of it, but that's just my question...
def. excited to see how this goes for you tho man
good luck

Light up the darkness.

hi there :) I grew a few plants 12/12 from seed in smaller spaces and with around 92W of light so it would be interesting to see the result of going 12/12 with a bigger space and more light, did you decide how many watts are you going to use ?

Lince- I have 208 total actual watts of CFL. (6) 26W 2700k and (2) 26W 6500k

I'm aiming for a 14g dried per plant (3oz total)....I may LST some or all if space allows.

208W sounds good and 14g per plant should be achievable.

How many litres are the pots you'r going to use ? Did I read that you have 20" for the plants to grow ?

right now they are in Solo party cups....thinking about leaving them there or moving up slightly.

Yes you did, I have about 20" of vertical space to work with.

Ok guys an update! First, I was mistaken by the wattage being used.... I have (6) 23W and (2)26W = 190 Total Watts.

Anyways, I have three sprouts! I always get excited by the sign of new life, and enjoy the journey through. I labeled the two beans I put in after the initial four, A and B. A,B and one of the initial four sprouted sometime today and temps are PERFECT.

Here are a couple pics of the setup, on the first one if you look to the left you can see my makeshift door: cardboard with sunshade hot glued to it, with duct tape hinges and circular velco to keep it shut :)

nice man looking like a good setup. i just started my first grow op with cfl's. i'm using four 100w for two pineapple chunks. I started them in rockwool in ff ocean forest. there in their third week of growth and looking good until a couple of days ago when the bottom leaves started shrivling and getting yellow and just now i looked at them and one of the second set of leaves is getting yellow spots. I have a feeling i am over watering or a nitrogen difficiency. any thoughts let me know.

flush lightly and get out of FF for now! FF is great stuff, but is way to hot (too many nutes) for seedlings! Use an all purpose soil ( I'm using Scotts brand) for seedlings and once they are ready for flower transplant into FF.

Thats exactly my plan for this grow, once they are good to go, Im going to transplant into slightly bigger pots with the FF Ocean Forest.

Good luck man!

I wouldn't recommend you to go with party cups all the way, how slightly were you thinking of moving up ? Not sure if I told you already but I used 1.5L pots before and also 0.5L (party cup style) and it's not worth it. Get 1.5L pots or even a little bit bigger if you can fit them, but not less than 1.5L, you'll be grateful you did it when you harvest ;)

I'm guessing the plants will grow 17-20 inch so you may have to do some LST or topping depending on how many plant you want to grow and the horizontal space.

And congrats on the sprouts dude I hope we can see some leaves opening up soon ;)
