Duct Booster Fans - Any Good On Their Own?

Just wondering if anybody has used just a booster fan for ventilation? I'm going to be growing in a 4x4x8 wood box with a tube cooled 600watt HPS, Was thinking of using one for exhaust with a carbon filter and one for the light (maybe one for intake but may just use and array of PC fans). Here is what i'm talking about :http://www.homehardware.ca/Products/index/show/product/I5532220/name/fan_booster_duct_6

It says 160 CFM free air which i think should be enough, maybe i'll use 2 for exhaust and have 2 carbon filters to be safe.

Any Thoughts?

I have been wondering this myself. I am using a 4" booster fan on my 150w cool tube and it works good. I have been thinking of switching out my PC fan and putting in another one of the 4" booster fans as my cabinets exhaust and add a carbon filter. I'm just not sure if the fan can suck through the carbon filter effeciently.

will be ok for that second guy with a small light but not the 400. any resistance on them and they fall flat. it may vent it but not enough to cool it and then adding a filter will kill it. thats why they are3 called BOOSTER. helps for long lines to move the air more freely.
you say adding a bunch of pc fans to help, why not just buy a real fan. there are cheep ones out there. or a squirrel cage will work better

I have used those fans and they are about worthless!! Its not suitable for a exaust, deff not going to work with a carbon filter on it. I use one as a fresh air intake. It rattles alot and is hard to keep quiet!

I found a couple exaust fart fans used in bathrooms that worked pretty well and quiet too! Might be a better option.

You might be ok thru the winter with those fans but not going to cut it in the summer time.

My honest opinion, is to get one if you cant afford a proper exaust fan.... i HATE my booster blower (because of my light power...) but it does work..... they say they move around 120 CF of air but they only realy move around 85~ CF/H, but it does keep up with my 1000 watt and all i have to do is keep the door cracked 1/2 an inch......

so on something like a kool-tube 600 watt it should work perfectly if your running 2, one exausting the light and one exausting the room :D

the reason it was loud was because it wasn;t secured properly, they are meant to fit into stove piping. stove piping is usualy secure and if it is it wont rattle.......

as for the carbon filter i agree entirly, you cant run a filter on these low power fans.

ive wondered about this myself...i have a 2x4x5 grow tent i had set up for about 2 weeks with 2 plants in it but i couldnt control the temp. no matter what i did...granted i only had 2 6" oscillating fans and a really strong 12v dc fan for exhuast (which worked really good) but i have been researching these fans trying to find out if they work to drop temperature like the more expensive fans do...i ended up taking my tent down last night and building a box to house my crops with my lights and fans...im going to put it back up eventually probably when we move into a bigger house because i had it in my closet and i had no room for anything...when we sell our house and get a new one im going to dedicate the closet in my office/man cave for my tent, proabaly buy another one for flowering... but right now i dont want to spend any more money on this thing because of the limited space i have...sorry to get off topic, but im really wondering if these work descent because i will enclose my box and put one in...i took the removable mylar floor from my tent out and used that as the wall on the box closest to the crops..the temp dropped pretty drasticly being out of the tent...anyway, thanks for posting this

I use em for exhausting hot air from my hood and for intake but yea for complete exhaustioon their crap. Remember you need to completely exhaust your room 60 times a hour. So you need to add it up from there of how many cfm you need for your grow area.

I use them but i will upgrade and get a bigger fan.Maybe the one at htg with the filter attached to it.They work ok i would not just say they are worthless.

I use them on my tent thats basically the same size as what your describing and I wouldnt go as far as saying there as good as a squirel fan or high velocity inline fan but they do keep my box and 600w system to a good temp and they do help to get smell and humidity vented to my chimney I have an 8" inline duct fan 300cfm that I got from
HightTech Garden Supply for $29.99 they come with the 3 prong plug already attached so all you have to do is plug it in, I noticed at places like homedepot ect.. that they dont come with a plug that you have to wire them your self. Heres the link for the fan im talking about: http://www.htgsupply.com/viewproduct.asp?productID=48436 Just my 2cents on the conversation.

*Disclaimer* All statements made above are purely fictional and hypothetically what I may do were I in that situation.

Those duct booster fans are good for venting small areas, and intakes...but they will not work at all for high performance exhausting or carbon filters.

You should go with a nice Eco-Plus 4" Inline fan.

I see this is an old thread, but I hope someone sees it...I am trying to use a 4" booster fan rated at 100cfm to be used as exaust for a small tent. one plant with a led light, the size is 2x2x4. I goofed and bought a booster, but it does have a little air movement....its not horrible and it seems better then any computer fan by quite a ways....
but wat I want to know is would it be suitable for a tent of this size, with led lighting? just looking for extra opinions on if it will work or not.
oh, and I believe my sq. ft, is only like 16 cubic feet....and the fan is rated at 100 cfm...so by that math it would work....but you know how math goes...
