I mount 20mm stars the same way as COBs, flatten the heatsink surface and the 20mm star to 1000 grit US. Not a single 20mm aluminum star I have ever checked has been flat although some copper ones have been. If you use a really good thermal paste this may not matter but it bothers me so I fix them all.

Attach with Prolimatech PK3 thermal paste or similar(not adhesive), press hard to get rid of air bubbles and get a thin even layer. Secure with kapton tape to stop lateral movement. Solder wires to pads.

Of course you can drill holes and screw them in

I was thinking screwing them down may be best along with some thermal paste.

Thanks to everyone(you know who you are) for all the help. This LED forum is blessed to have the many knowledgeable minds that make it what it is. It was this statement by @Positivity that changed it all for me: "Point of DIY really is to use better leds than commercially available. The results from a cheaper led may not be as worth the time..."

hello, i m from italy and i m tryng to make my first diy grow les...this is one of more interesting but because a 3 years ago 3d i m asking to you id do you still think that a red light supplelement to a cree cxb con should be useful. the red/uv/ir really our plant need them? and a second question is whats about a 100w cree cxb3590 on artic cpu cooler....this is for 180w cpu so might be sufficient.isn t it? i'm really sorry for my english, hoping it s understable. regards!!
