Hey my do it yourself- ers,
I am in the process of "making" my own led light and it might just knock your socks off how easy and how "cheap" the cost is. Now with all that said I'll prob have some haters or people jumping in with all kinds of lumens per watt, efficiency, and all that mumbo jumbo...but i'll stop you right now and say Cococola don't care lol. So its this simple hence the KISS in the title. I bought two reflectors from cfl-growlight.com , just the reflectors with no bulbs for a greattt cost. Cause I'm no electrical expert, so making one was out of the question , to make that clear lol. These are the units

Now, i said to myself hmmmmm I don't want a million cfl bulbs with all that heat, because it takes 28 bulbs for two for these reflectors. Sooooo when I saw captainmorgans results under cree globe leds I said bingoooo. And I'll tell you I went to home depot and the 9.5 watt 2700k was on sale for 7.97 a pop...while unfortunately the 5000k 9.5 watt were 13.97.

Easy math but to sum it all up it is costing me $467 TOTAL for two reflectors with 133 watts actual draw each, for a total of 266 watts of mixed cree spectrum goodness along with 22,400 lumens which is 84 lumens per watt which isn't too shabby (To me). Personally that is pretty damn cheap, because each reflector is 36"x20" so two of them will easily cover a 4x4ft area perfectly.
While I'm not going to sit here and compare and banter about these lights vs a xgs-190 from area51 but hey I'm getting way more coverage and watts for less than one of the area 51 panels. Not trashing that light because its obviously got better penetration and what not but I only need them for veg and I wanted to share with you guys my idea. :joint:

Nice..I like the idea. Be pretty sweet to put a couple high power cree cobs on the reflector with a heatsink on the back...BOOYAH!

Believe me I have two spare 1450ma drivers and wanted to put a couple cxa3070 cobs on there some how but wanted to go as easy as possible lol

Coco you need to go look at tags420 thread https://www.rollitup.org/led-other-lighting/676858-tags-high-efficiency-lighting-garden-45.html

Those diagonal splitters if you keep them aren't going to fly. Check out the the next page too [p. 46]

^^^^^a 400$ solarstorm at best is 399 with shipping from growershouse and at 200 watts and won't cover 4x4ft at all^^^^^^^^^come a little better than that

Believe me I do plenty of research, I have read through many threads , tags, and many others....this is meant to be "EASY assemble and GROW plants" not be the best led on the planet lol.....plus im only vegging here people i have a very good flowering room....when its put together and my plants look healthy and yield great ill go back to all these comments and just smile.....much respect though to all comments and growers i accept all criticism, but at the end of the day always do my own thing...Im not a grass is always greener kind of guy. Btw its 467 total cost...if you follow me at all you'll know ive bought more panels than most people over the years lol and thats not to brag at all ....Ive flushed a lot of money down the drain on sucky panels from ebay, china...even some companies known to be great.

I have a huge electric bill no matter what I have like 5 or 6k of lighting lol so I cant get involved with all the above lol....plus I'm a newb central when it comes to soldering (not afraid to admit it) so i didnt want to mess with cobs or xpgs/xpes...and etc...I've only owned multiple leds never made a panel :)

Interesting . I thought of doing one for veg. If you are flowering with this. Maybe add some more globes for side lighting like captain's.

Strictly for veg only my man....no need for me to use it for flowering. Unless I start any autos in the future

Thought I would share the final result with one of the lights done. Its pretty damn bright :), the only thing is it won't have a ton of penetration but neither do t5 or cfl lighting for that matter...the plus is noooo heat even right on the bulb, the whole unit only draws 133 watts and 1.15 amps on the kill a watt. I have two identical panels as the one shown in the photos. I wanted to take the bulb cover off but cree said its dangerous because if ever touched you can get electrocuted so maybe not worth that.

Once my seedlings need more room , we'll see what these babies can do

That first pic is a little bakey... I am so fargin stoned and tired. I'm partaking on some of Mo's chocolate jillybean right now >-)

I want to see what you can do with that light. Especially since Captains did so well.

The first pic makes it look like a makeup studio lmao... but i'm hoping for good results.."VEGGING wise" and hey if it happens to fail to meet my expectations than I have some very nice side lighting hahaha

Sooooo heres an update from my current veg room and I decided to post it here to the people that may doubt cree globes vegging capabilities... I have 4 beasts in a 4x4ft tent with only 266watts of cree globes 5000k/2700k mix :hump::mrgreen: Better than the quantum badboy I used to have a while ago and wayyyyy less heat than any veg lighting Ive ever used

If you do open em up, you can see what they are talking about with a risk of shock, the contacts are a good size and easy to touch when screwing em in.
