Disappointed with Breeders.

10 years running now I've been buying seed, from many breeders with threads on this site.
I'm tired of taking the good with the bad, I don't have room nor time to waste on average phenotypes; which is my largest complaint. You buy a pack of beans, and have to hope for the one.
And then you can't keep the one without cloning everything, then smoking it to find the one; which takes many months.
And then new breeders come along, crossing and re-naming the same strains from 5 years ago; confusing and watering down genetics. Making seed purchasing even more difficult.
And seed banks are even worse, selling anything they make the mistake of buying.
In another thread a gentleman just assured me that seeds are way better than 30 years ago so no worries.

I'm working on so e
I'm going to name my next Wedding Cake cross, Divorce Cake.
Can I breed one of those males with one of my iraqi crosses and call it "Jody" for the vets out there?
Also working on a strain called "PV2 Mustang", there's nothing really special about it, but it's bright green and over 23%.

With the advent of more U.S. breeders, I am seeing some improvement. The biggest problem I have is sorting through countless strains I have never heard of. One thing I have noticed is that even the best seed banks and breeders are not necessarily adept at marketing and running businesses. That takes time to improve.
One thing to think about is what seeds would sell for if it was 100% legal to buy them. I am guessing a good strain of cannabis seeds would sell for about the same as a pack of morning glory seeds from Wal Mart. Time is on our side.

I make my own seeds and end up with way too many.

[QUOTE="Coalcat, post: 15008049, member: 1005807" Bodhi strains are really really good.[/QUOTE]
Most, not all.
Ran granola funk and phone home, the latter had a not so great phenotype.
Granola funk was awesome, top 5 ever.
As a whole I've had the most overall success w/Bodhi, a winner in every pack.
Just popped 2 more of their older strains, Dank Sinatra and Landos Stash.
Wish they would make fem beans, but...I can see why they choose not to.
Best smoke I ever grew was a fem, Kandy kush by Reserva Privada; but as I mentioned her sister hermied.
I have a free Bodhi pack of sunshine daydream x GG4, which is labeled: "Possible sensitivities when grown indoors".
My guess is self-pollination tendencies upon flipping the switch to flower.

You will be happy with the Danks and Landos. Also not a bad idea to f2 the Danks if you can. It is no longer available and has a well earned rep for being kickass.
As for the GG4 x SSDD you are 100% correct with your guess. GG4 seems to be known for it and the GG4 x OMG I ran came with the same warning. Only had the one shoot nanners most of the way along in flower. I just picked them off as they grew. It ended up being a great GG4 leaner and haven't found a single seed so far. I have a clone of it going outside atm.

Cheers :)

I switched recently (past 3 years) to just American breeders and the quality of what has popped has been way better. Also more $$ isn’t better. Bodhi strains are really really good.
I read somewhere on this forum that they have potency issues?? Like wtf??

If you are referring to Bodhi potency issues, I can easily see it. Many Bodhi strains arent really potent. They all have their pros, but potency is lacking in some Bodhi strains.
I was following some HOf strains/wOs topic and some pulled that quote about them and potency..I was surprised coz everywhere I'm reading how good they are. Htf they can be top breeders and lacking potency? Wtf??!

Well they can still be top breeders and lack potency. Potency isnt everything to everyone. If it were all about potency you could just use concentrates. Sometimes I do like to smoke without getting too high. Nice functioning buzz at certain times of the day or when important things are happening.

I made a cross of Plushberry X Killing Fields years ago that was not what I would consider potent but a lot of people loved it. Solid purple buds with grapey purple smell covered in crystals with the right buzz type, even without being potent it was the right type of buzz that made people happy and chill.

if you are a pain patient, general rule is more or most potency rules. Not taste, not terps, sorry. Just like regular serious medicine, morphine dont' taste good, but it works, lol. But hey, they make CBD oil both full spectrum and not for most of those terps I see nowadays. And terps help with many things via CBD oil. Per the Bodhi thing, its always kinda been that way, if you've not had many hashplants, the Dank Sinatras f2's out there are tits.etc, just for an example. Until his Chems and OG's, just not super strong. Even the Gojis, thats prolly why you see it crossed so much. Hear more bout the black triangle these days seems like. But they make up for it with value, selection, customer service, and good vibes. For the folks that potency is not the number one priority. Most people cant afford concentrates, nor grow enough extra medically to make concentrates. jmho

I don't grok all the complaining. Who's not growing great smoke these days?
That’s what I see; Fire everywhere! Happy days!

I do think breeders at large are stepping up their games to do more intentional line breeding, tracking heritable traits like “genetic” purple flowers (and like CBD vs THC vs THC/CBD intergrades, obviously) and I think we will start to see more in-house grow testing.

Perhaps we will start to see fewer F1 chucks with funny names and fancy packaging...as if that’s going to happen. Shit, I will even make a few myself.

I am dipping into the seed breeding hobby because I have three decades of experience breeding reptiles, I have the patience to work a line for years, and I like doing it. I will probably give the fuckers away, like all the good chuckers I know do. I know how to manage line breeding project and I don’t see a lot of “breeders” in the US doing it. a lot them seem like chuckers with a marketing budget. The good older generation of US breeders are pretty secretive which I think will be the wrong strategy in the near future.

Domestic seedbank websites are still a goddamn joke. They are all, every one of them, slow, ugly, technologically unimpressive, pop-up-riddled garbage.

We have a long way to go in the US Cannabis industry before we hit maturity as a market segment in a “real” business sense.
