Deep Ecology

Here's an Excerpt from The Tao of Physics by FritJof Capra:

"deep Ecology", was founded in the early 1970s by the Norwegian philosopher Arne Naess. Deep ecology does not see the world as a collection of isolated objects, but rather as a network of phenomena that are fundamentally interconnected and interdependent. It recognizes the intrinsic value of all living beings and views humans--in the celebrated words attributed to Chief Seattle--as just one particular strand in the web of life. This is a philosophy that engenders a very profound sense of connectedness, of context, of relationship, of belonging.

At this deep level, ecology merges with spirituality because the experience of being connected with all of nature, of belonging to the universe, is the very essence of spirituality. On the other end of the spectrum, ecology is grounded scientifically in the Theory of living systems. So, the question naturally arises: What can the emerging scientific theory of living systems tell us about spirituality?

Well, systems science says little about spirituality. But, interestingly, it can say something about the nature of the human spirit. Part of that new theory of living systems is a radically new understanding of mind and consciousness, which I discussed in some detail in The Web of Life. In a nutshell, the new theory asserts that cognition (the process of knowing) is identical with the process of life at all levels of living systems. According to this theory, known as the Santiago theory of cognition, mind is not a thing but a process. Mind is the process of cognition, which is none other than the process of life, and consciousness is an elaborate form of this process.

The Santiago theory provides, in my view, the first coherent scientific framework that fully overcomes the Cartesian split between mind and matter. Mind and Matter no longer appear to belong to two separate categories but are seen as representing two complimentary aspects of the phenomenon of life: the process aspect and the structure aspect. Mind is the process of life, the process of cognition. The brain (and indeed the entire body) is the structure through which the process manifests itself.

I would like to hear thoughts on this subject from my Spiritual and Philosophical Thinkers. I'm sure, I'll hear from my Scientists as soon as they finish Corroborating

I found myself unable to read past the first couple sentences. The world is not a collection of "phenomena." Clearly, who ever wrote this does not understand the term phenomenon. Why read further?

not sure I understand why life cannot be described as a series of phenomena? From my perspective, a phenomena can be anything that happens, within some level of defined space and time. But that is surely only my perspective.

I am a scientist, but also a philosophical thinker. I particularly like the references and discussion around the structure and process. My thoughts of late have revolved around energy flow. Thoughts, memories, mind activity are packets of energy, ebbing and floing (toing and froing). Energy balances in nature and in ecological cycles are important yardsticks for understanding the underlying processes. Spirituality is also a measure of connectedness and I believe is achieved in matching energy flos. I was astonished to learn that the docking of the space station and space shuttle aircraft takes place WHILE they are both traveling at 28,000kph. Talk about a balance of energy and connectedness. Or maybe I am not thinking straight at all. Sometimes I wonder. Walking On!!~~~~:o

You could not read past the first few sentences because the world is not a collection of "phenomena"

A phenomenon (from Greek φαινόμενoν, pl. φαινόμενα - phenomena) is any observable occurrence.[1] In popular usage, a phenomenon often refers to an extraordinary event. In scientific usage, a phenomenon is any event that is observable, however commonplace it might be, even if it requires the use of instrumentation to observe it. For example, In physics, a phenomenon may be a feature of matter, energy, or spacetime, such as Isaac Newton's observations of the moon's orbit and of gravity, or Galileo Galilei's observations of the motion of a pendulum

Why Read Further? Don't!! ...You're Quiet 2 Intelligent for this kind of Hokey Pokey, That is the Only thing Thats Clear Here...Buddha Bless U

It's Not Just you're prespective, More like the Rest of the thinking Universe as well, excluding Smiley....

Thanks for you input, that is some fascinating info as well :peace:

ur very welcome. I spent quite sometime examining and researching Industrial Ecology, which was born out of the ISO140001 EMS process. I still believe it has great application. I also believe that this current global "restructuring" that we are all experiencing will actually enable the move towards more efficient technoologies, and a rebalancing of the global economies. Another prime example (to me) of the power of polar opposites. The further an imbalance is allowed to go, the greater the whiplash the ensues. Personal thought and ponderings. A Great Thread!:clap: Walk On!!~~~~

Change is not a Matter of personal choice, it is always seemingly forced upon you by a force equal, greater, & sometimes less than You , however you wish to catergorize it....Just some personal thoughts as well, Cause and Effect

I think I agree, the forces that act on us are not by our choosing though the reaction we have to those forces, and the direction or path we choose, is our choice. Or am I missing your point?
