I doubt it, americans are fat bastards watching football for the stupidest reasons. scoring dont even amke sense first point = 6 + a punt. Basketball u run and dribble boring, baseball just overall gay. Soccer is fun and exciting.

2006 Fifa world cup , final game. Italy Vs France.

France player (forgot) head buts an italian team player. lol its awesome

david beckham is waaay overrated.
he will definetely not make a difference in popularizing football in the states.

it saddens me to be from one of the few countries who don't give a damn about the greatest game ever.

I dont think they got him there cos he's the best in the world. He's still amazing at football tho, better than any1 in LA so he's going to improve the team loads. They got him there cos he's the most famous player around that sells the most shirts, gets the most bums on seats, women love to look at him and men who appreciate football admire him and he is the best player to try and raise the profile. Whether it works or not is a different story. Personally I think he will do good there. Also he as he will raise the profile of footie there, more and more good palyers will more there making the football better to watch

Sabud the player that butted the italian is zinadine zidan (one of the best players in the world!!!!!!) And Yes Beckham is wayyyyyyy over rated there are many other players who can use both feet to pass and score, its partly because of who he married (an ex spice girl) and when he was getting the publicity for that he was a player at Manchester United one of the most well known teams in the world, But i think the main reason for all this hype is because Britain wanted a golden couple to put on a pedestool. Thats what i think anyway. Like Jimbo said he WILL sell shirts and tickets because of his profile still don't mean hes a brilliant player though.

Way to over generalize.....either way, the original question of this thread was about the popularity of soccer increasing on a national level because of this one player joining the L.A. team. The answer is no_Of course with the constant flow of illegal Mexican and central/south American immigrants flooding this country on a daily basis, give it 10 years and soccer may be the #1 sport in this country.

I heard my first Beckham news here in the US, he is hurt or was hurt so he is going to miss an exhibition or missed an exhibition.

Soccer takes tons of skill. As for the adverts, America is all about the money. Trust me we hate the commercials too. American football isn't a bunch of fatties running around either, it is a game of skill, and requires immense teamwork and strategy...believe it or not. You have 24 different positions and each one is a little different. Any of you guys try and catch a ball coming at you at like 85 MPH while some 265 pound guy that can run the 40 yd in 4.5 seconds is coming right at ya. Ever try and throw a football 50+ yards acuurately while you have about 6 huge guys chasing you down? It also gets the stigmata over here of being played by stupid men. Ever see a pro playbook? A QB has about 5 seconds before the snap to read a defense and about 3 seconds after the snap to read the play and decide what to do...it is not easy. I mean there are so many variables. I agree with the rugby thing, but rugby players aren't 250+ running 40 yards in 4.6 seconds either. And actually Rugby is becoming more and more popular by the second, my town has a team and has for about 30 years. it's a local club and they travel over to England or Ireland once a year for tournaments...they usually lose but I hear it's great fun.

See the problem with Beckham going to LA is LA sports can be a bit soft and "hollywood" if you know what I'm getting at, no one outside of LA will care.

And remember not all us americans are the same just like you Europeans aren't all the same. I know we get the big ugly stupid american stigmata, it's not true. I must also say that American Football to me is some more than just a game. it was something my family used to do every Sunday, now the family is all gone so it takes me back to my childhood. Funny story about that...my pops died right before the Eagles played in the Super Bowl two days before in fact...all he asked about was what was going on in the news and how the team was looking...they lost but he never knew it. Our Football is like your football it's a religion a way of life.

the only sport i care for is real football.
And real football is what we play here in America I hope you mean, because soccer or whatever the hell you guys call it is straight up garbage. Im sorry to be blunt but as an American it isn't much of a big deal to me or any real sports fan.

As for Beckham, the only thing I know about that dude is what his wife looks like and thats for reals.:hump:

I live in the US and I don't think it will change anything. We just tend to care about baseball, basketball, hockey and football. I mean those are like the only really big events (World Series, Superbowl, Stanley Cup, NBA championships) I don't see much publicity for soccer other than the World Cup which only comes around every 4 years so yea I don't think its going to change what people think about soccer here.. but yea im blitzed out of my mind right now!

I guess it boils down to Americans like sports with more of a mental challange to them.In football baseball or Basketball you are basically playing a chess match against te other team.Every line up in football requires a specific reaction for the opposite team.In basketball you have to learn specifi team player strengths and how to exploit it play by play whether its running the triangle or defending the moving post.Baseball you have to know which of your hittiers hits a particulkar pitcher better at a particular stadium whether its a day or night game. When to steal or bunt.Soccer you have a basic set up then its all chance of how the ball comes off a kick. You have a giant field to spread the play over which is boring to watch,Offensively there isnt much scoring and its not to exciting to see the ball go in the huge net.We have pro soccer in my city but like most you almost never hear about it unless you turn the spainish channel on like telmundo.I'll give credit to the rugby guys they are a tough breed of player but soccer players are consider pretty gay in the US except by mexicans which are now adays a huge influx illegally until we can get rid of them we might be in trouble as they come in so heavy and then try to force thier culture on us making America like Mexico so evetually they will have 2 shitty countries. If they had have a brain they would come in the right way and adapt to this country as they saw they fucked thiers up and thier culture and ways dont work so why would you do the same in a country you see as a dream only to destroy it like the 1 you just left.Either way soccer is the lowest of low on the sports list in the US.Even Tennis and bowling are considered bigger and as much as I hate it NASCAr all the redknecks got cable lol

pouring money into us soccer leagues isnt going to make it more popular. i have already seen many advertisments for pro soccer games on tv but that doesnt make me want to go out and buy tickets. its just not appealing to many americans it doesnt matter how much you advertise really. people go to american football games, baseball, basketball etc. as much for the sport as for the atmosphere its about having a good time. the reason soccer is big everywhere else is that they have huge stadiums, big rivalries, and people like the atmosphere that it brings. in america you just dont have that, small stadiums (for soccer), and really no defining characteristics about the experience. for instance many people dont go to baseball games just because they like the team they go because its a nice thing to do on a sunday, go to the park get some hotdogs and beer, and just be in that good atmosphere. you have that atmosphere over seas with soccer we just dont have that here.

You obviously don't know anything about football. Real football, not the shit you muppets play with your hands. FOOTball, get it? You have different 'line-ups' in real football too. 4-4-2 (standard) 4-4-2 (diamond) 4-5-1, 5-3-2, 5-4-1, 4-3-3, 4-2-4. The list goes on, with different attacking and defensive positions dependant upon how the game is flowing. You may also want to attack the wings, or the centre, you may want to sit back and defend a lead or press on and go for glory.

Defenders need to know when to press and when to hold back, when to get into that crucial position to head a crossed ball away from danger. Some midfielders will be good at taking the ball past other players with dribbling skill (Christiano Ronaldo), others will have pin-point passing accuracy over 50 yards (David Beckham), others will like to blast the ball towards the goal from 50 yards (Frank Lampard) and quite often score.

I've played computer games in my past, both real football and the american shit. The americans have certain set plays that involve certain players doing the job demanded of them by the play.

In real football this is exactly the same, only it's far more complicated.

Pele was another famous player to go to the US in the 70's. I'm sure Jordi Cryuff did too.

The only thing that is going to help the US realise the wonders of real football is when they start winning things. They were expected to do well in the last world cup and played like they were a conference side.
