Dave's First LED Grow Using Area 51

Here's the basic system:
  • yellow bucket on top that will get filled with Perlite
  • 5 gal res below
  • in between there's a strong shelf that's reinforced with sheet metal on both sides:

I put river stones in the bottom of the yellow bucket, an idea that PetFlora gave me. They'll keep some of the tiny Perlite chunks from draining out the holes in the bottom, or clogging them, and they'll make water drain out better, since they don't absorb any.

First I put in the big, round rocks...

… and then covered them with smaller stones.

100% Perlite on top, filling up the bucket the rest of the way.

Here you can see the water ring on top around the little seedling, fed by a 1/2" tube attached to a water pump submerged in the res.

I chose the Critical Kush seedling. The roots were about 8" long already. One leaf got damaged when I accidentally let the Rockwool cube get saturated with water for a few days. She's doing much better now.

I set the water pump timer to water the plant for 5 minutes every hour, using an ART-DNe interval timer. Doesn't water during lights out.

Here you can see water draining out the bottom of the bucket while it's getting pumped in at the top:

I used that silver Reflectix stuff to cover the cracks in my shelf, so that light doesn't get into my res.

Here's the whole system with a little PC fan blowing on the plant to make it stronger:

The res holds about 5 gallons of water. For tonight I just filled it with pure water. I'll add 1/4 strength nutes tomorrow.

Rubbermaid also makes a Brute tote that is 20 gal I believe. So it's their 'heavy duty' version of a tote and it's around $20 each. Well worth it imho. Available from HDepot...

I use one of those Rubbermaid Bus Boxes like you're using atop of it for a small flood & drain setup that can hold 3 x 2 gal pots quite nicely. Or 1 x 5 gal as well. Smart Pots work great in it. Probably do very well with those new 1 gal pots and fit 6 or so in there I'd bet...

I also used the Botanicare flood & drain fittings, not the cheaper ones from like Sunleaves... But they've became hard to find locally and I needed 2 more risers... luckily their threads are compatible with standard PVC fittings from the hardware store... But I prefer things that thread together rather than slip fit... and they're much heavier plastic... built to last...

Thanks. I'm not sure how any of this applies to my setup, though. What you really need to do is write a journal for one of your grows so that people can see pictures of what you're talking about. One picture is worth a thousand words, as they say.

Thanks brother Dawg! I copied some elements from Flowamasta and some from you. Last time I tried a bucket like Flowamasta's, but the roots grew through the top bucket into an outer bucket, which wasn't supposed to happen. This time I ditched the outer bucket entirely and drilled holes in the bottom of my yellow bucket to intentionally let roots grow down into my res like you do. I like that idea.

You're right about the fan! I didn't see that. I'll go move it or tape it in place now.

Say brother Dawg, did you pay $189 for your RO system like the price is today or is that a "Black Friday" special sale price? If it's temporary, I might have to jump on it!

Thanks. I like your avatar. Looks like you've had some experience with LED's. How do you like your SGS-160?

Made a few little refinements to my system to neaten things up. Had to drill 2 of the holes in the front shelf a little bigger. Then covered the crack between the front and back sections of the shelf better with pieces of Reflectix.

My little seedling looks VERY happy today. I don't think I've ever seen a pot plant lift its leaves so high up. It must really like that Area 51 LED light.

I can't complain about the temperature! When I used fluorescent lights I had a hard time keeping the temp under 80 degrees.

I thought of moving the fan off the top of the Perlite, but it's stable as long as I don't accidentally bang into it. I'll move it after I think of a way to mount it on something else that I can move around outside the bucket. For now, I'll just take it off the bucket whenever I work near the plant.

Note: It isn't pictured, but I had to cover the entire underside of the front shelf with waterproof metal tape, because one of the airstones splashes water up against it constantly. It would have rotted and warped the board pretty quick if I hadn't noticed the problem.

Yeah i agree lol

If it was me i'd be at work wondering if water leaked out and covered all my electric and started a fire...

Just to be a critical cunt...i would suggest mounting your power board a little higher....just for safeties sake... :)

This is great advice. I don't know why I didn't think of it by now. One screw should hold up the power strip. The other junk I might need to tie to the wall somehow.

Thanks guys! Critical Cunt... that must be Critical Kush crossed with Alaskan Thunderfuck or something. :-)

to move to fan away a little bit you could just use the clamp to clamp it to the lip of the bucket, still just a bandaid solution but at least if you knocked it or something it would just fall to the ground instead of the plant, awesome looking set up dude, the effort is starting to show through, can tell this will be a really well organised grow/thread
