Thanks bro for posting..
Theres alot to say about coco..
First off it's reusable
And naturally breaks down in 6 months..The fiber will tend to seperate.. But I love to make a coco compost out of the left overs...

Here is my cycle..

I have a hand watering drip system.. I use croutons.. on the top 3/4 layer.. then use 1/4 E-coir in the bottom... For extra drainage.. But I do not suggest reusing the pyth.. I will post more detail info shortly
cany anyone tell if it is safe to use fox farm nutes (tiger bloom, grow bif, and big bloom) with coco coir. the brand is coco earth by OMRI.

Hi Don,

Thanks for your reply.
No probs its what RIU is about!!
I'm moving to a new place in about a month so I'm busy doing all the reading I can now till then.

How is the perlite mixed with the peat? Do you put the perlite at the bottom and the peat on top or do you mix it together before putting it in the pot?
i generally cut open the 50 litre coco bag take about a buckets worth out and pour in a load of perlite n mix it with a ladle ( youll probably only be able to reach halfway down the bag but its easy enough to mix ).
To germ the seeds, from the stores I have been to the only thing I was able to find was Jiffy pellets. As I am somewhere in Asia, ordering nutes and grow mediums online is not an option available to me.
germing seeds, everyone has their own way but i just use the between a paper towel method works fine wet the towel n put it in somethin light proof and airtight 2 plates is ideal. check on em in a couple of days, now i generally wait till the tap root is about an inch long, and pop it upto the seed straight into the coco! BOOOM your done!

Between the paper towel --> coco peat method or jiffy pellet --> coco peat method, which is better?

I am planning to start with an autoflowering strain, probably Lowryder 2 or Easyryder. Haven't decided yet...

autos are good but if youve got the space i would go with a normal strain for a couple of extra weeks growing (the tales of them finishing in 6 weeks are bollocks) the extra couple of ounces is worth the wait :joint:

happy growing K!

anyone know of any coco specific boosters?
im using the canna coco with the canna line of nutes and all the suggested additives, but on my current cycle i didnt use the boost accelerator but would like to use something other than just my couple weeks of pk 13/14.
any finishers, boosters, ect. that r ok to use in coco with coco nutes?
i know you cant use any shooting powder bcuz it fucts the coco up so you cant re-use it.

I would stick with the canna nutes, additives, and the PK during week 4-6 for now.
MJ is still a weed and doesn't need a lot of extra boosters other than what your using already.
Anything more is overkill and unnecessary.
Good genetics and good growing make for big buds, not excessive additives.
If anything run the boost accelerator towards the end.
It does help to finish them off a bit quicker than normal.
I wouldn't bother running the BA throughout the grow because it really does f*ck all except finish them early.
My 2c.

yea i know, thats the only difference ive noticed as well. mine use to finish about a week b4 everyone elses that was growing the same strain (i was the only one using ba)... now that im NOT using the b.a. i can tell im gunna be in the same boat as them.

on a 8 weeker with one week of flush... when do you think i should use it? like which weeks? or would you use it during the flush as well except 4 the last 2-3 days?

Yeah I reckon you could run the PK through week 4 and 5 then start the BA and run it until the end other than the last few days.
Coco only needs a few days of flushing.

Ok thanks 4 the advise.

Also, xtra cal/mag seems to beef up you r yeild quite a bit although i havent dialed in the exact ratio.

150-250 ppm is recommended if using r/o water but when using tap water its a bit trickier to dial in or may not be needed, but i think every coco grower could use a little extra calcium

is everyone adding some calcium to their coco ??
If so how many ml. Per gallon and how often?

I am a new grower and am starting using coco 50/50 Sunleaves CoirBrick/PieceCoir brick in 6" baskets over a rubbermaid tub with a small pump in a 5 gal bucket reservoir to drip irrigation spikes. I am running Canna Coco A+B, Rhiztonic, Cannazym, and super thrive using light feeding as per Canna website calculator. http://www.cannazym.com/

I am letting i would guess 30% - 40% run off.

The strain is Ganesha's Dreams and I didn't keep track but would say they are 6 weeks from germ. They are under a 600w HPS with a fan to keep them cooled of a bit.

These should only get to 2' max according to the source. They are between 6"and 9" tall now.

My question is should i continue to veg them (at 24hrs on now) and then take cuttings or go ahead and start flower and try to get some cuttings in a week 2 or 3?

Other info, I hope to get a fan and carbon filter tonight or tomorrow.

Oh and I started the seeds in beer cups with 100% earthworm castings and really had problems with that burning the babies. I will start in coco next time.

Any ideas on how to make this grow better will be appreciated.

you need a average of around 25% run off.

if you are using r/o water than u are gunna want to add calcium for sure. (canna designs their nutrients for high quality tap water with a cal/mag ppm of 200-250, so they dont put the cal/mag in the nutes, that means you must do it!
fill your rez. with ro water then add cal/mag until your ppm's are up to 150-225.
after that you can add your base nutrients/additives until you reach your desired ppm's.

i think you prolly want raise ur ph a little too. 5.6 - 6.0

take your cuttings in veg or at least in the first week or two of flower, veg would be better tho.

also, the proper time to water coco is when the container is half the weight that it was after a fresh watering. they will all dry out at different rates, so when half of the plants have lost half of their water weight, it is time to water.

you probably wont need the drip irrigation until the plants are mature and flowering.
over watering will not result in bigger yields. coco is hydro technically but really it is its own category: Cocoponics. and its pretty comlplex stuff, but lucky for us its pretty user friendly.

correct watering and calcium are two things to dial in when growing in coco.

Interesting. Just starting my first coco grow this week, using canna coco and nutes.

I was advised by my local hydro shop that when watering coco by hand manually, as I will be this time, it's better to add perlite to the mix as well. So I have done a 60/40 coco/perlite mix. Any thoughts on that idea? If using 100% coco, then a dripper system is better apparently.

I collect and use rain water as RO is too wasteful for me. But I guess I will have the same cal/mag issues though? When do you start administering cal/mag? Sounds like I need to get some!!

Thanks for all the useful info guys! :joint:

not sure what their thinking is behind the advise hydro shop guys gave you... im sure they got their theories tho, maybe their thinkin you wont get a even watering with the drippers if you add the perlite? idk?

anyhow, i hand water (which is best) in plain coco with great results. i use canna coco and you are not. coco varies A LOT so i couldnt really advise you for your specific coco but i know its not needed in canna's coco. if you do insist on using it they say not to mix in more than 10%... last year they said 25%. im sure your 40/60 mix is okay.

get the cal/mag and i would highly suggest trying to find canna's coco next time since they seem to be the leaders when it comes to coco. its charged and buffered for u with trichiderma and such. they have a few kinds as well.

cheers man, I am using canna coco, it's canno coco 'plus' with their 2 part nutes. Reckon I'll have to experiment a bit with it then. I think the advise with the perlite is so as not to over water by hand. IDK. I'll have to experiment a bit for myself I think, like I say, it's my first run with the stuff having grown in soil for the last 2 years. Looking forward to trying it out though.

sorry snowwhite, i got ur info mixed up with the guy b4 you ( corwin)...
you ARE using canna coco so my advise is to not use the perlite and water by hand.

use the cal mag the whole time once the plants are established. start at a 150 ppm's and peak it out at 250 ppm later in flowering. stop using it when you stop using your other nutes for your final flush b4 harvest.

sweet, thanks for the info mate, I'll pot them up into 100% cana coco when the time comes and go from there. Looking up for some cal/mag online now.

yea its pretty much impossible to overwater coco, it just wont produce ideal results if its logged with too much water all the time, but dont let it dry out. and dont treat it like soil. use the weight technique i described above to decide when to water, trust me, all my advise comes straight from canna. you should be able to water every other day or maybe everyday towards the end, unless your in big pots...

another tip a lot of people dont know is not to run plain water through the canna brand coco... the canna coco itself needs to be feed at least a small amount of a+b with every feeding (2ml per gallon). when you water with plain water it washes away the good stuff that you try so hard to build up... benificial microbiology type o stuff i believe.

also u should concider the rest of the line up... rhizotonic (awesome for roots + foliars) , cannazym, and the pk 13/14 for flowering. they make boost accelerator as well but i cant really justify the cost anymore after giving it a solid chance for the last year. it is good for foliar feeds tho, and if you can find the small bottle it's only $35.00 and would make a million foliar batches.

ta mate...yeah, I watered my first batch of coco with a 0.9EC of the A+B nutes as the coco is totally inert.

I got the PK 13/14 for later and the boost (I'm a sucker for the marketing bullshit!) but I got the small bottle to try it out first:) V expensive like u say. I will be starting up a journal of my new grow soon (when I find my bloody camera charger), the last of my 9 seedlings has just broken through, so it's game on!!

Calmag is surprisngly hard to find in the UK, so I'm gonna get the individual nutes from canna, cos it's all I can find.

JBerry thanks for the heads up. Tonight's batch got adjusted to 160 ppm with some mag and cal additives I have for my aquarium. Not the perfect scenario but the best I can do till I get some other micro nutes. I let my pH come up a bit to like 5.5. I was told it rises a bit over time and was best to start a bit low. I will start checking it again after a day to see if that occurs.

I also added a 400w MH bulb to one side of things to get a bit more light down into the lower part of the plants. I have it about 16"-18" away from the sides while the 600w is about 24" above.

I ordered some Hanna pen meters TDS and PH and an IR thermometer gun to keep track of parameters better without taking apart my aquarium stuff every time.

snowwhite, ask your hydro guy how the water is in your area or have him test a sample of your water for you. it kinda worries me that it is hard to find. I cant imagine you not needing at least a bit, but if your water has a lot of cal/mag already in it, then i dont want to steer you down the wrong path (dont know a thing about uk water).

get a rough idea of how much is already in your water and add until your at 200 ppm.

this is good advise for anyone using canna.
