I'm thinking of switching my cfl grow to hps or mh,I got this lightsource from work and I'm not sure if its hps or mh but I do know the spectrum is at 5500k..id be switching from 100 watts of cfl to 400 watts. Has anyone flowered with just 5500k with good results?

The answer to your question is yes you can flower with a 5500k but I don't think that's recommended. I know some 5500k bulbs are considered full spectrum but they still lean more towards a blue light.

So will it work? Yes it will
Should you do it? It's up to you but you would get better results with a light that's more red like a 2700k

This is the answer I was looking for, I already knew its best to go with 2700k but I don't have that what should I expect if flowered with blue spec only??less yield I would assume.

Yeah, it'll most certainly work. If it's HID, you'll probably have to mod it for your grow, but it will work. I've done many a grow under MH alone.
