Best Fan Ever. Extremely Quiet

Thanks for the fan find. Can the speed be reduced with a standard speed controller?

this is the problem, comparing apples & oranges. i really wish someone would post sound levels for everything. THAT is my highest priority, keeping my neighbors out of the loop. i had a reasonably quiet hobo setup using a generic box fan with a cheap furnace filter/carbon scrubber behind it blowing air into a cardboard funnel i made blowing into my light & pushing air out of the room when i opened the door at night and continually scrubbing the room's air in the daytime too. i'm sure i wasn't moving a lot of air as you could just feel a gentle breeze blowing out of the exhaust. i didn't have any duct howling problems, but my next rig is going to have two lights and a better DIY carbon scrubber. the hobo system though was quiet enough that i had to be in the room to hear it even with the duct blowing out of the room and it moved enough air that my single 400w light was merely warm to the touch on top.

these fans get really expensive. is there anyplace that tests fans & speed controller combos? you'd think with all of the indoor gardening, high times or someone would do a shootout & measure noise with an SPL meter.

kudos on the "self cooling" info on fans. i wasn't aware of that and worried about heating problems if i were to make a soundproofing box for a fan. odor shouldn't be the biggest concern for my grow as i don't do funky strains, but i like to keep EVERYTHING low profile.

i don't know that i can afford $250 or so for that panasonic. i'm thinking of maybe just getting a 4 inch value line and a speed controller. i just want to move enough air to keep my lights cool and do some scrubbing without making a lot of racket or breaking the bank.

things get even more complicated when you toss in cheaper squirrel cage fans that you can't put a speed controller on & there just isn't any info on this online. i really wish someone would do a fan shootout comparing various brands, sizes & types & factoring in speed controllers to come up with a DEFINITIVE "quietest fan setup in the world".

i bet the reason the panasonic is so quiet is that it has it's own case, but i bet you could get even quieter with some thick wood around a regular inline as that would dampen vibrations better than sheet metal.

hey... THERE'S an idea... if your inline fan's case is humming, try sticking some of that dynamat used for carsound competitions on it to dampen vibrations a little.

all the descriptions of ALL duct fans make them sound louder than a big old box fan on low even if they don't have the same pressure capabilities. keeping it quiet is way more important than how many cubic feet per minute a fan moves for me. low odor strains do most of the carbon scrubbing for themselves. i really don't want to invest way more money than i even want to spend on something i might not even end up using. this is so frustrating not getting solid answers and only getting discouraged that fans might cause more problems than they solve.

now THAT'S what i'm talking about! those noise levels are pretty darn good! there are many PC fans out there that are louder. i'd still like to see ALL fans get rated though as cost is a big factor when you get up to the $200 & more mark.

it's weird that the middle range is actually quieter than the smaller ones, but maybe that has to do with the smaller ones spinning at higher RPMs.

thanks for sharing those stats. +REP!

it took some looking around & i had to use soler and palau as a search term to find them here, but they're actually on the cheap side where you CAN find them as apparently they haven't caught on with indoor gardening places yet & had their prices go up. i wonder if you can put a speed controller on those too. i'll have to ask their US distributor. i'd plus rep you again for also possibly saving me a few bucks too if i could.

most places only have the 4" model, but it's available as cheap as $75 with free shipping!

I use a 120mm Delta and the thing sounds like a jet taking off. Mine pushes 240 CFM. I'm going to replace it soon. The thing is ridiculous loud. Can't complain about the output or quality of the fan though. It's been running full bore for nearly a year with very little off time and still works like a champ. It's brushless so that makes a huge difference on reliability though.

IMO, if noise is a concern, stay far, far, away from the 120mm Deltas.

I have a TD fan. I use a TD 150 MixVent to cool my 400 watt reflector. It's a quiet fan...I also have a 4-inch Active Air that completely drowns out the sound of the TD. It doesn't move as much air as the Panasonic, but it works reliably, it's quiet, and Solar and Palau make a great product.

not just quiet, but less than half the price of the panasonic. quiet & cheap = win win for me. i think that's what i'm going with. i don't need to move insane amounts of air. besides, i'm inclined to think a carbon scrubber will catch more odor if the air flows slower through the grains.

that makes 2 votes for them as a quiet fan. i really like the flat bottom on that design. it should make it easier to spring mount it or put it on a hemorrhoid donut for extra isolation. it's cool seeing more people weighing in on the topic & adding their experiences. i'm really leaning towards the S&Rs. i saw them mentioned in another forum too when i tried researching this before coming back here. they look to be a best kept secret.

To be honest, computer fans Ive always found to be the quietest when you direct-wire them...I have setup old computer cases as small grow boxes and you cant even tell its on with the fans running....

Also, you can use them to build cheap-ass filter boxes with hardly any sound...https://www.rollitup.org/do-yourself/484741-d-i-y-air-filter.html#post6589353

Ive had it running for a few days and to be honest the standard oscillating fan I have outside the door is 20x louder than going inside the room.

i planned on making a PC fan setup with 4 scrubbers in each corner, and was talked out of it in another forum. the whole "static pressure" issue comes up.

i think i'd rather go with the larger fan. 24dB or less isn't shabby and i expect a fair amount of heat with 400w each of halide & sodium. that, and i wanted to used my lights to heat my apartment, so a stronger fan would help. the S&Rs would be especially nice if they can be used with a speed controller like i expect they can. i still have a month or two to figure this all out, but i'm really liking the S&Rs. those more expensive econo inlines are supposed to be loud AND they look like a pain to mount.

i'll be growing in a spare room with hopefully a dozen plants or more, so PC fans might not cut it in the long run, but i'd be keen to see someone make them work.

in looking at reviews of the units at various places that sell them, "quiet" keeps coming up and they get "near silent" marks at the grow forums i'm seeing them mentioned in too. if i get one, i'll let y'all know if they're a good buy. i like that they even come with their own 2 speed controllers too.

Sorry to drag up an old thread but can this be used in a homebox tent or is it too heavy? is there cheaper and more silent fans available on the market today?
