Basement too hot... is AC my only option?

Hello everyone,

Summer has made my growroom hot!:fire: I have a 5x10x7 flower chamber in which I run two 1000w HPS in aircooled hoods with an 8" 750cfm vortex and a Y split. I exhaust the flower chamber with an additional 8" 750cfm vortex. The air cooling the lights is dumped outside the house but the chambers exhaust just goes through a carbon scrubber that is a few feet away from the chamber. Right now the flower chamber has a passive intake on the bottom opposite the exhaust hole. The intake for the aircooled lights is just in the basement hung near each other at approx the same distance for balance in the Y split.

My ambient temps in the basement are around 83 degrees. The basement is approximately 90% insulated and is half sunk with a concrete floor and ledges.
There is another area in the basement, a small crawl space underneath a room, that is divided from the rest of the basement by insulated wall. The ambient temps in that room are around 78 degrees.

Lately my grow room has been getting too hot. Normally averaging 86-87 but sometimes peaking at 90 and I know that the hot california summer months have yet to show their worst. So what can I do about it?

I was thinking of making the aircooled light intakes begin in the crawl space, or maybe making the chamber's intake an active one with a small fan drawing air from the crawlspace. Or maybe both! I would really not like to have to resort to AC since I am already pretty much maxed out on drawing power.

So could anybody please chime in if they think drawing air from the crawlspace will be sufficient or if I will just have to break down and buy an AC?

All comments are appreciated! Thank you:leaf:

Condition the air in the basement adjacent to the room. what size is the passive intake? pull in the cooler air by way of the passive. Where is the air coming from that cools the lamps?

the passive intake is a rectangle approx 12x24" with an air filter covering it. i could just get some big ducting and run it to the other room and see if that works.

right now i have quite a bit of negative pressure in the grow room to ensure smell doesn't leak out.

the air cooling the lamps just comes from the main basement room, approx. 8 feet away. the 6" ducting is just hanging from the ceiling.

Gypsybush-

An ad for that icebox caught my eye in the last hightimes I read. In the ad though it said that you needed to run cold water to it. I dismissed it for my use as there is no water line down there. But after reading your link I see I could just have a cold water rez? Do you have any experience running an icebox with a rez instead of a direct water line? Do you have any idea how much a setup like that would cost?

Thanks!

I am in AK... I do not have to cool my op, I heat it...

So no.. I have no experience...

But SOG just got done with his and he is grinning ear to ear because it works way better than he expected or planned for...

I STRONGLY suggest you talk to him...

A res and a chiller will do fine...

There is the initial cost... (talk to SOG) but it's worth it in the long run...

You can have a totally sealed room, no temp issues...

One dude cycles water from his swimming pool...

But you could easily have a res and a chiller.... instead of the AC for most of the year and little AC in the peak of summer, depending where you are...

All I'm saying is that it is a viable way, and worth investigating for sure...

Best of luck..

Oh and check my sig for my journal... There's a pic or two in there..

il tell you guys how i keep my room cold and at 29.c or around 84 85 farenheit i have a grow tent in my house you no the ones you can buy from any good weed shop or hydrophonics shop i live in europe and latley over summer its been hot so i went down my local garden center and spoke to a few old guys in their about how to keep my room from not geting hot so they told me this and it works for me i have tested it like 3 4 days in a row i actualyy turned my outake fan off and just had my normal 3 10 inces fan on the trick is simple if you have a grow tent pour normal tap water about 2cm all over the floor off your tent so it creates a little puddle about 2cm also by the end off the day most off the water has dried up. and for some reason it keeps my tent from not geting hot dont ask me why i have no idea before i was geting 33.c so hot in my tent after doing this it stayed between 28.c and 29.c day time but iam in my final 2 weeks to harvest my humidiy also in the room stays around 45% an 50% hope this can help mate example of my tent and my plants down below guys iff you dont have that much money maybe you can give this a go i would like to know is this just me or does this really work any input or info on this for my own knowledge guys would be wonderfully. thanks guys happy smokin live free or die.:leaf:

I think that the water cooled air to water exchangers are pretty cool, they do work but they take a little more planning to incorporate into your setup, money as well.

Chillers seem to be pricey and add alot to the cost of the setup.

I was wondering about this, SOG,
https://www.rollitup.org/grow-journals/131873-sog-grow-room-op-6.html#post2500905

The coils of copper, if you had 100 feet of this inside a 70-100 gal rez with cold tap water running through it constantly, would it serve as an electrical chiller? would it cool down the slightly heated water that is coming from 4 iceboxes?

The reason is because if you run drain to waste, the water is most likely below dew point and thus it will condensate on the hoses and inside the fins on the iceboxes, you may have moisture issues. if the water running through the IBs is warmer, but still 10* less than the room temperature, it will still remove the heat and NOT condensate.
