It certainly can be. For me it's fine, just because I was interested in AR's back when they were blowing up around 15 years ago, so it was something that was discussed all the time as part of the rifle configuration to be legal in California. It's all about context though, so if it were used by Piers Morgan in a rant, then maybe it would sound inflammatory. I don't think lives on the propaganda spectrum, but sometimes visits.

I love the idea of state's rights, because without them we'd all be at the bare-minimum federal level, which typically operates a good twenty years behind the times, so if you want more uniformity, then you'd have to be okay with a big step backwards and smaller/slower steps forwards.
I don’t share your positive outlook on states’ rights. A lot of our institutional evils and bigotries survive because of that compartmentation, I believe. I consider the cost/benefit bottom line to be negative.

No. Assault weapon is an empty, redundant term designed to demonize some guns. It is meant to suggest that guns are somehow disgusting.

Assault rifle is a defined category if military arm.

The AKs and AR-pattern guns everywhere are not assault rifles with the exception of a very few Class 3 licensed weapons in private hands. Select fire requires individual licensure Federally under class 3.
But so easy to convert to a full auto. Hunting rifles that are semi-autos can be converted with a lot more difficulty. Same with getting high capacity mags for them. The AR15 has enough aftermarket people making parts to turn what would be a decent varmint rifle into a tool for mass murder.

I don't think the issue is state laws versus federal laws, but whether or not the problem is big enough to provide the bandwidth necessary to do something about it.

By semi-auto hunting rifles, do you mean say a Temington 7400?

I could be wrong, but centralizing some of these concerns appeals to my sense of efficiency. It would help greatly to have similar gun laws in Cheyenne as innBrooklyn or Kailua.

Being that the Nevada border isn't too far away, I can definitely understand any complaints about the differences between the gun laws. But again, if you want uniformity, that means California implementing Nevada's laws, not the other way around, nor a "meet halfway" mix of the two. That doesn't bother me so much, but lots of people wouldn't be happy about it.

I think CA law is way too repressive and unjust. A cop can buy an AR-4 designrd for close quarter battle. I dislike the double standard. I’ll accept that most guns in the Gun Digest are verboten here so long as the police exemption is dismantled. I think we might see a new song coming from a group of emphatic gun ownership opponents: police chiefs. They want a monopoly, and that annoys me.

Nevada is way too lax. Gun shows come to mind.
If we have more uniformity, I think gun owners will feel less under threat, and the people concerned about shootings will know that at least there isn’t some sort of weapons bazaar just over the line. It should be stabilizing in both instances, and I see states’ rights as an impediment. (I also see them as enabling the current assaults on reproductive rights and other hard/won civil liberties.)

Yeah I don't hate what you're saying at all and would love to see some sort of 2a concession from democrats. Not because of anything to do with guns, specifically, but because I think it's important to support something you don't like. It's one of the truest forms of honesty.

And specified as an individual right. I seem to remember Justice Sotomayor suggesting that the right is institutional and not individual. That angered me.

Im much more ambivalent about 2A since for the last year I’ve seen support for it tightly correlated with the radical right. The periodical sent to NRA members is full tilt MAGA. The paradox is that the more some militant righties fighters in about gunrights, the more they bias the rest of us toward seeking to undercut those agitators. And I have no idea what to do about it. Especially when I saw the very different way the police treated these Waffen-SS pretenders vs. peaceful protesters drawing attention to serious injustices under the banners Antifa and BLM, I was unpleasantly surprised. They’re spoiling it for generally quiet peaceable sorts like me.

With enough money you could turn an AR15 into a varmint rifle that I would easily outshoot with my '51 SAKO
A nice thing to have if you have a field in front of your bench that is lousy with ground squirrels, and a coupla thousand handloads with thin-skinned projectiles.

Let's talk about crime, not theft as in my opinion, possessions are not worth a life, anyone's life. I carry all sorts if insurance and everything is replaceable.

I've been to lots of towns at night.

But we live in a country that has more people in total and per capita behind bars.

Just how many violent criminals are there in the u.s.? Are there so many that those who are not in jail are a constant threat? Are we packed with so many more violent people on this country than any other?

In most situations there are four levels of danger. The least dangerous is a situation where there are no guns.

The next is where there is one, and you hold it.

The next is where there is but one and someone else holds it and the most dangerous is where there are two (or more).

I figure that my remaining unarmed is most often the least dangerous.
I really don’t care about the overall danger percentages. What if someone has a gun and is attempting to harm me or my family? Who, because we bought into the those danger stats, are left with only our powers of persuasion and foot speed??
I’m the most peaceful guy on the planet....52 yrs old and never been in a fist fight. Me having a gun is not going to make any situation any more dangerous, for me at least.
If I’m misinterpreting your points, I do that sometimes and will amend my opinion......But one thing I’m not going to be is an easy mark or sitting duck. Gun free zones are the most dangerous places one can be...in my opinion. Only the law abiding will respect the rules anyway, and those are not the ones facilitating the trouble. Sorry I’m rambling. Be well all.

Gun-free zones serve one purpose. Anyone violating them is likely to get a more severe sentence compared to the same gun crime in unrestricted territory. If it is evenly adjudicated.
