Alternate solvents?

I was wondering if anybody has ever made oil with solvents other than butane or isopropyl alcohol. (i.e. ethyl/methyl alcohol, chloroform, ether, etc.)

not that there's anything wrong with butane or iso, per se, just a curiosity that's been tickling my brain for a while.

I know people that have used hexane...you just gotta purge the shit out of it. It's more toxic than butane

It can be done but butane is more user friendly

Theres acetone but compared to butane i think it taste worst, but easy to make. Then there's the gumby method of ice water hash which worked great for me but its not oil more like bubble hash but not.

One day I'd like to try CO2, but all the preps I've encountered require decarboxylating the THCA. I prefer cold gentle extractions that leave the THCA intact ... it solidifies if it's the main ingredient, leading to the semisolid "wax" extracts from the corresponding strains. I also believe that THCA stores better than THC, and upon smoking it flash-converts to THC anyway. cn

hexane extraction? anyone have any experience with this. might be buying some hexane tommorow...... what about naptha?

haha i'm kind of afraid of what i started here...maybe massah's on the right track.
something that came out of the bho thread on here that got me thinking though...i wasn't aware that butane has propane mixed in...could you use liquid propane? because propane is cheap as hell and uses standard gas fittings.
again, i'm not looking at this as anything more than a hypothetical...just something i find interesting.

Hexanes are my "usual". What do you mean by "naphtha"? In the states that is a high-boiling fraction ... unsuitable. cn

<edit> Where do you source your clean hexane(s)?

Hexane is no more toxic than isobutane. Just a little harder to get out. With a vacuum or a little heat it comes out just fine. Butane is way more dangerous. Flammable gas is much more dangerous than flammable liquid. That's why all hydrocarbon gases hav a 4 rating for flammability, while the highest liquids have 3.
Rick Simpson uses naphtha for making his oil. Pretty much any nonpolar solvent will extract thc. It's just getting rid of the solvent.

i have vm&p naptha for a future project(dmt), i guess i'll just save it, you can find hexane on ebay

VM&P typically boils at 120 to 150 degrees C; call it 230 to 300 degress F. Way too high imo. Hexanes are the better bet ... cn

thanks cn, any info on heptane(friend may have some) do you think it would work?
Heptane is a good neutral solvent, but it boils at about 100 degrees C, same as water. I would not use it for a ricirculating (Soxhlet)-type extraction. You will definitely need vacuum to remove the solvent without "cooking" the extract.

As chain length increases, so does solvency, although the slope isn't steep. The extract begins to pick up chlorophyll and harshness molecules ime.

A good source of heptane is fractional distillation of Coleman fuel ... that's my preferred "cheap, available" neutral solvent for A/B extractions like Dimetripp from M. hostilis bark ... cn

if you are thinking of doing supercritical anything I would think again. you can't without serious machinery.

73 atm at 31 degrees C, good luck with that. The CO2 extract you see in dispensaries are not supercritical at all, they are made with liquid CO2, you can almost call it subcritical.

nothing beats 'tane for solvent extracts. its easy to keep in a liquid state, and it evaps quickly. the polarity and temps are perfect for stripping cannabinoids and not chlorophyll.

water is technically a solvent so I suggest making ice water extract...

how would you go about making a subcritical/liquid c02 extraction?

And FWIW, I agree with you, Matt. between butane, ice water, and dry ice there's really no need for fussing with anything else for a real world application...i'm just asking because all of this stuff fascinates me.

Eden labs sells the extractor for CO2. Tamisium sells another, capable of handling many solvents.

Not to be a dick, BUT you all should go to the Eden Labs and Tamisium Extractor websites. They are extremely informative and lack the BS that you normally find on forums. I could tell you all the info second hand, or you can go read it first hand for yourself.

Heres the link to Eden's page on supercritical: http://www.edenlabs.org/supercritical_extraction.html
