I agree with skunk, they (the leaders) don't want us to be free in our thinking. The school books on history are Rife with propaganda that the Govt. wants to fill the young minds with. My son told me when I asked him 20 years ago what the high school history books had to say about the Viet Nam war; "An unpopular war fought in Southeast asia, where 56,000 Americans lost their lives in pursuit of freedom for the Vietnamese." That was it, one paragraph. McGraw-Hill must be a sub-culture of the CIA. Hitler took over editing of schoolbooks, maybe we should pay attention! Maybe thats the reason so many college students revolt against the status quo. They've finally discovered they were lied to all through primary school when the professors actually encourage them to think, and make their own judgements. Maybe thats why all those Southern school dropouts are for Bush, "uneducated rules for uneducated fools"! "They hate us for our freedoms", "Mission accomplished" "The insurgency is in it's final throws" "I never had sex with that woman" Soundbytes from hell!

Well it could be true, "you are the newspapers you read", but are you made of virgin trees or re-cycled. I'm thinkin that some of us don't read the papers, maybe just the comics.

When are you gonna get it. Politicans are basically all the same. Self serving butt heads. It doesn't really matter what party they all feed on pork.

Now get a stoner in there. About the worst they would do is get the munchies!

The libertarian viewpoint is that we should abolish the government monopolized school systems and have schools for profit, operating in a competitive market. What are your feelings on that issue?

Schools for profit, would that kinda coincide with prisons for profit. That has been a debacle. The greedy prison owners cut back on food for the inmates, cut amount of guards, threw out the guards union, have very limited benefits for guards, attracting a less capable genre, and basically cut costs everywhere, therefore maximizing profits. Would you like to see your Grandkids schooled with this quality of owners running the system. Lets see, we can cut school lunches (who needs those) cut teachers pay and benefits, hire less teachers to teach the same # of students, cut the quality of supplies, and have no oversight by the community (PTA and Schoolboards etc.), Just in it for the profit, yeah thats what I'd want for my grandkids, NOT!

Threw out the guard union? Great! Here in California, when the Medical marijuana inititive was on
the ballot, the group who lobbied the hardest against it was The California Prison Guard Union." The reason was ... drug users are their "customers." The drug users keeps the prison guards in business. In order to maintain their power, they would rather see little old ladies in wheelchairs in prison instead of sitting comfortably in front of their TVs at home getting relief from a joint or a canna-cookie. They deserve to have their freakin' union disolved, in my opinion.

My grandkids go to private schools ... as did my own kids. And yes, I paid my taxes to support the government schools AND also paid for a quality education for my children as well.

The school lunch program for the most part is nothing but the result of the lobbying efforts of the farm and food producers. Its to the point now, that free or reduced price lunches, paid for at taxpayer's expense is common in most schools today. If they are so necessary (and I'm not saying that some are not) what in hell do these kids eat during summer vacation?

Teachers should be paid on results. Results have nothing do do with class size and everything to do with the quality of the teacher. Our government schools are VERY top heave with administration. The average classroom cost is $300,000 per year. Most of that money goes to administrators and school board executives and not to the classrooms. There is more than enough money going to education, its just not spent in an efficient manner. But then, what else would one expect from a government run operation?

Businesses run for profit must compete with other businesses run for profit. If they don't measure up to the competition, they go out of business. It is the consumer who decides who stays in business and who fails. This is why, on the average, private schools provide a much better education than government schools.

Effeciency yes, for profit No. The two are not synonymous. When there's a profit motive, Greed rears it's ugly head. There is no oversight except by greedy investors! the end!

yes the old donkey and a stick thing doesn't work, you can't motivate everyone by just dangling a bonus/ lots of money in their face, that only encourages the type of competitiveness that made Enron such an insane company, lying about profits to stock analyst's even to stay in business, Enron did that, there was study done and made into an episode of horizon (scientific/political documentary) that proved that a lot of people high up in "capitalistic" styles of busininess actually did LESS work than everyone else, they are experts of manipulation rather than a real craft, that is the problem, especially with systems that are based entirely on profit and not on scientific/cultural progress.
