I love homemade smoking devices. I tend to make one about once a week just for shits and gigs. Here are some of my tips. Enjoy 
1. Obviously make sure everything is air tight. Super glue works but tastes awful the first ten times.I prefer hot glue guns but make sure it's not a really crap ass plastic because it can melt right through.
2. When making bongs I always make my female a diffuser. Its easy as shit and makes it hit so much smoother. I usually use pen tubes so all I have to do is hold a flame at the end that will be in the water for about twenty seconds. Then just press it against a hard surface. The goal is to close off the end completely. Then I use a thumbtack to poke tiny holes all over it I usually do about 5 to 7 rows of em. The science behind it is smaller holes means smaller bubbles. Smaller bubbles means more smoke is actually going through the water. In turn way cooler smoke. I have a two liter bong named Debbie with a diffuser and the hits are infuckngcredible.
3. Some pen tubes will for perfectly into the end of a socket. If not perfect just wrap the end of the tube with electrical tape a little at a time until the socket fits perfect. Then there is no need to add a Carb cuz u can just lift out the socket once u have achieved your desired amount of smoke. And I know some of you are like fuck nah that shit will get way too hot for my fingers to touch it. Well that's why I wrap the outside of the socket with electeacl tape too.
4. When making pieces out of bottles instead of keeping the mouth piece as is I usually just cut top off with an exacto knife so there is a hole about 3 inches in diameter. Cover the edges with electrical tape so the plastic doesn't cut ur mouth. So basically u put your mouth inside the hole rather than around the outside. Now you have a way to get ice in that bitch.
5. When making a ' lung' bread bags work perfect and fit inside a two liter perfectly.
6. Smart water bottles are the shit.
7. Cigarettes make perfect holes in plastic. If u take your time your diffuser will fit nice and snug and there will be no need to seal around it.
8. When making a piece that can hold an insane amount of smoke aka my 6 liter perculator I suggest making two bowls. So yes u will have to find another lighter. Lighting two bowls at once obviosuly fills the shit up twice as fast so your hits are more effiecnt and u can fill it with out having to take multiple breaths which will result in stale nasty smoke.
9. Ashcatchers are a great addition to any piece. I usually use a medicine bottle for this. I put my socket into the lid ( like a gravity bong cap) seal it up with hot glue then make a hole at the bottom yet still on the side of the medicine jar thing. Then set up another pen tube that will fit nicely into your diffuser tube. That way you can still pull it out properly. The only downside of this is that it usually weighs a good amount which can make the diffuser perpendicular to the main bottle which will get water into the ashcatcher which defeats the purpose. So make sure the diffuser is very secure at your desired angle. To get the fallen weed out of the ashcatcher simply just open the lid of the medicine bottle.
10. Fuck water use Hawaiian punch. Don't put it in glass bongs because it will leave it sticky but its gplastic so fuck it. Its delicious.
11. Go into the plumbing section of a Lowes or Home Depot and ask for the watertight tape. This works great and can save you alot of time and is only about $4
12. Have fun getting high as Fuckkkkk without having to spend mad money.
