What's up again fellow growers! I hope everyone had a merry christmas. It's been almost a year since my last journal but I never stopped growing, just been real busy lately with work & family. Thanks to Amendment 64 I can finally grow legally without any worries! I was so excited I had to get started right away.

I bought some Dinachem seeds online, supposedly Dinafem's version of ChemDawg, and got some White Widow and Blue Widow UFO freebies also from Dinafem. The kushberry beans were from a friend I've grown it a few times in the past with great results.

I've been using Foxfarm soil for years but the guy at the hydro shop talked me into buying a bag of Roots Organics soil, a friend of mine uses it as well so I thought I would give it a try. Added some perlite and blood meal to the mix and I'm good to go. Also picked up a bottle of liquid guano from Home Depot.

As far as nutes I'm using Advanced Nutrients 4 part formula (Grow-Micro-Bloom-Bud Candy). I like to start the seeds under a 250w HPS and veg for exactly 1 week with 18/6, then I switch to 12/12 and move them to the tent with the 400w HPS. I transplant them into their final pots and start feeding at about 2 weeks.

The first to sprout was the kushberry on 11/18 but 3 plants was not enough I needed more :) The seeds arrived in the mail on the 20th, I germinated 2 white widow but only one of them decided to sprout. It's a very strange looking plant with short curly leaves and grows very slow, but I'm not giving up on her yet.

At this point I said what the hell and decided to pop 2 of the dinachems, they both sprouted on 12/09 for a total of 6 plants. I think I'm getting in over my head the most I've ever grown before was 3 at a time lol, but I'll never know if I don't try :)

KushBerry:

There's 3 plants in each pot, but they are all females and the pots are very large so I don't think I'll have any problems. Now that they are getting bigger I will rotate them weekly between each tent so they can get even lighting.

I tied the branches down with string to keep the canopy even. I topped them all at the 3rd node which will result in 4 main tops on each plant, 12 tops in each pot if all goes well. It will get pretty thick in there soon but I think it will be managable.

ChemDawg/White Widow:

The plant in the bottom of the pic is the white widow, it's 2 weeks older than the others but as you can see it's about the same height. No signs of preflowers yet on these 3 but it won't be much longer. I will tie the branches once they start stretching a bit more.

I'll try to update this journal frequently with new pictures every week, so stay tuned for bud porn :) Looking forward to any input or advice from other 250w/400w growers out there, let me know what you think!

Whatup man. Scribed for the ride. Looks like you are coming up in your equipment and genetics. I would veg more now that we can legally have all the bud we can grow on 6 plants. Grow trees brother.

Stop by anytime....

Hey bro :) I want to veg longer but the problem is my tents are only 2.5' wide and 5.5' tall. Last time they got too tall and out of control and I ended up topping late in flower because they were getting too close to the light. I don't want to make that mistake again. The 400w should keep them a little shorter and the cold weather should slow the stretch a bit. I really need to stop messing with seeds and grow clones now that I have 2 separate areas, that would solve the problem completely.

I was considering using the tents for mothers and converting one of my bathrooms to a bloom room, but I would need more light and there's no windows so ventilation would be a big issue. The way its set up now they get tons of fresh air and ventilation from 6 fans, 2 4" inlines attached to the lights and a cheap box fan pushing air in each tent.

On a side note, I just wanted to say there is so much helpful information on this site. I found this chart a long time ago when I was lurking the forums and after some experimenting I can now say it is 100% accurate.

For anyone who grows regular seeds and hates discarding male plants you should definately give it a try. I used this technique to identify female seeds for my past 3 grows, the most recent is the kushberry in the image above. Out of 3 seeds all 3 turned out female, it's not just luck of the draw it really works.

Hmmm. I'm skeptical but I'll give it a shot next pack of seeds. Certainly won't discard any but at least see if there is any truth to this.

It works every time for me, just be very picky when selecting which seeds to germinate. I pick out the perfectly round ones with indentures in them. I'll never waste money on feminized seeds again when you can usually find regular seeds for half the price.

Your grow looks nice. I don't know if I would trust that chart though...

Why buy feminized anyways? If a male pops up kill it, or collect the pollen for breeding. Keep up the good work though.

I agree, but I dont breed so I have no use for males at all. Why waste soil and nutrients on male plants when you can selectively
remove them before they sprout :)

I mean. You can maybe get them before they sprout, but really... I'm not sure if it's ok to trust that chart. Seeds are seeds, they don't have like... Any reproductive organs. That's like deciding the gender of a baby as a zygote...

I was skeptical too at first but it works try it some time :)

Here's my nutrient line-up, I water the plants every 2-3 days and feed every other watering. I haven't used the epsom salt since I switched to chem nutes but I'm keeping it around in case of a Mg deficiency. More pics coming soon!

Pretty bottles. At least they did not hook you for the organics line. You could lease a car for what they want for a bottle of fucking poo and water.

We should mix you up some dirt that you just have to water. I went the lazy stoner route last year and have not looked back. Plants love it too.

Molasses is always a good thing to have in your grow also... At least at the end, so the roots can work to their full potential, even with the roots being overcrowded and shit.

Lol yeah I have to admit I'm a sucker it's hard to say no when they try to push their products. I want to try subcool's soil recipe but I dont want to mix it myself I'll probably make it too hot.

I want some mollasses but I can never find it at my local grocery store. I might try Whole Foods or Sprouts I'm pretty sure they carry it.

I'll let you know next time I mix some up and we can do a double batch. I don't use Sub's exact recipe but it's close enough.

Awesome I'll take you up on that offer. I'm liking the Roots soil so far it retains moisture better than FFOF and for half the price I think I'm sold.

Time for another update...

The kushberry is almost 6 weeks old (3 weeks flower) and is moving right along. Not as many branches as I expected last time they branched out like crazy. Probably due to the 1 week veg time, I'm still trying to find the sweet spot when it comes to veg time. I want them to stay nice and short but it's not worth it if the yield is tiny.

White widow is 4.5 and chemdawgs are 3 weeks old. they are twice the size of the WW now, I tied the branches down but it didn't help much. Hopefully the stretch kicks in soon or they will pass it right up.

All 3 started showing their preflowers this week, according to Dinafem these plants like lots of nutrients so that's what I'm going to give them.

My light setup, nothing special but it works. One cheap 4" fan pulls in fresh air from outside and the other vents hot air out the top of the tent. I also keep a box fan outside the tent blowing air directly on the plants. Both tents are identical besides the wattage.

It's been about a week and a half so here's another update with some good and some bad news. I'll start with the good news.

The Chemdawgs are almost 2 weeks in, lots of new growth with very thick branches and nice bud sites. Both plants are almost identical in height and leaf structure, one of them is clawing just a little I think due to the cold winter temps, but it's not a very big deal.

The white widow (bottom) is still dwarfed in comparison, it's an odd plant it looks nothing like other WW plants I've seen on this site. The buds look very strange with lots of short wirey pistils and tiny leaves. It will be an interesting smoke but I don't think I'll grow it again any time soon. DinaChem on the other hand might be one of my new favorites I love the way it grows.

Now for the bad news... The Kushberries are doing good for the most part, but one of the plants has some pretty ugly yellow spotting and curling on a few leaves. It happened overnight, I went to sleep and she was fine and the next day it looked like this.

My first thought was the blood meal in the soil burned it, but the other 2 look just fine so I think it might be a cal/mag deficiency. Doogleef confirmed this for me but I wanted to take pics for further confirmation before I start adding epsom salt to my water.

Tried to take some close-up pics of the leaves, but this was the best I could do with this crappy 5mp camera :(

Sprayed a little guano into the soil and gave them 2 waterings with about 1tbsp of epsom salt each. If this is a magnesium def. it should definately help. The new growth is coming in green so hopefully it did the trick.
