my house is standard 120v but i have 250v in the garage for the dryer machine plugs.
if i change the outlet is it possible to safely run some 240v digital ballasts on those?
or does it require me hiring an electrician to wire my house for 240?

all i am trying to do is grow in a growtent with two 1000w lumateks.

anybody?

If the plug fits then I would assume it would be fine because those 240-250v plugs have a different plug pattern than the standard 120v. So maybe just check out the 240v plug VS your 250v wall socket and then go from there. You could always just call somewhere like an electrical supply warehouse and ask them. =)

The plug will likely be different. You can run digi ballasts for sure but you are just going to need to change the plugs. Before you do anything, buy one of those five dolllar little testing lights. They have two probes and two lights that say 110 and 220. You will use it to A. ensure their is no power to the outlets before you begin! and B. test the outlet by sticking the probes in the various holes to ensure you have it wired correctly.

You don't need to buy the spendy 220 outlets, standard outlets will work fine and you won't have to change out the cord. Just be sure to use a marker to write 220 on the outlets so somebody doesn't plug a 110 item into the socket.

The info on how to wire them is all over the internet. Three wire or two wire, it makes no diff.

Cheers,

well the dryer outlet is way different than my ballasts outlet.
my ballasts plugs look like standard house plugs but with the two prongs flat out sideways instead of vertical and parallel to eachother.
so it would require just buying a outlet plug that fits my ballasts plug and wire it to the wire coming out of the wall i assume..
i just hope i dont burn the house down.

like legallyflying is saying you can ghetto rig it to a standard outlet, but never ever let someone plug 110 into it... The link I posted was 8$ outlet, I wouldn't call that expensive to have it done right. The timer is optional, but since you are going to need to time your lights regardless, the timer solution is likely cheaper then a 220v timer.

youll need to match your cord caps and plugs to the amperange that the breaker is, as well as the voltage. it will look something like this..
30amp 220/240v
15amp 220/240v etc etc.

very important stuff right there.

the tricky thing thats making me scratch my head and hesitate is that the dryer plug says 250v. and my ballast is 240v.
is that 10v difference going to cause fire or damage to equip?

do yall think this is somthing i can do alone? or should i have an electrician look at it?

no, it does not matter. the plug is rated for 250v. its essentialy the same thing. there is a +/- voltage when dealing with electricity. not even the power company can garuntee 120v at any particular outlet.

you need to look at your ballasts ampere rating before just wiring it on to a 30 amp circuit. it may very well be a multi-tap ballast with a 240/250v rating but i doubt it will be at 30 amps.

dryer outlets are 30 amp outlets.
installed on 30 amp breakers.

im thinking your going to need a 2 pole 20 amp breaker.
remove 30 at panel, install 20 in its place.
the wire is a number ten copper. good for 30 amps.
however you need to buy parts for 250v 20 amps.

you can buy an adapter on line if you dont wanna do shit except plug something in. it has a cord you plug into the dryer outlet, and then it splits it up for you.

I recently had my friends dad add a 30 amp breaker and ran 240v 3wire cable into my basement for me because hes been master electrician for like 30 years. I decided to throw down the money and get a C.A.P Master Lighting Control unit that run 240v in and 4 120/240v outlets out. Its working great and I'm only running 2 600w hps and 2 36w LED off of it on 240v. I'm only using 5.3 amps but if i want to add more LEDS and 2 more HPS i can. i figure i have atleast 15 amps to spare :D mebe 20 if i wanna push it. Heres what my set up looks like lights timer etc. https://www.rollitup.org/grow-journals/384835-swiftgrow-journal.html

dryer pulls more amps thats why plug is differrent and wire mabe thicker ,but your going down in amps ,so your fine if anything i would replace that double pole breaker thats eacher 30 or 35 amps to a 20 amp double pole, but no biggy 30 is fine ,just my 2 cent
